    Something has happened to me since i moved to England from California and wondered if you have the same experience?
    I have lived here now for 2 years, and my work week has changed from 63 hrs p/w to 39, so i have a lot more free time and am much less stressed, not only that but so is everybody else, i can phone almost anybody to go out for a pint and no'one ever refuses people are never to tired or to stressed or to broke, it is great no'one cares about what you drive or how you live (as long as you get your round of drinks in), one of the people i drink with is a millionaire and i did not even know, i am a butcher and have been drinking with him for months!! No one cares as it is no ones business, being free from the restraints of working long hours and the whole "keeping up with neighbors" in my opinion is REAL FREEDOM, i think maybe true freedom, people are so real here, conversations are more personal, people tend to not speak if they have nothing to say, and nobody shouts, yes i miss my family but the Uk feels like home to me, like visiting grandma's house.
    Thanks for the video. It was heart warming

      Where are you living in the UK? Some of the stuff you mentioned varies according to the area in which you live. But generally, you're correct. People don't usually care about job titles or earnings or material possessions, but they do care if you're interesting and have a good sense of humour. I've had some friends for years and I still don't know what job they do or how rich they are because that type of stuff is on a need-to-know basis

      @LMNOP999 Newcastle Upon Tyne, I love it here, i am sure people "take the piss" but I can hardly understand them so it is OK, but no seriously I love the people here, my wife and I drive all over on a weekend and no matter what small country pub we inevitably up in, we always meet some.really interesting people and have never once felt like a foreigner more like a neighbor, people are so warm and generous with there time as no'one ever seems to be in a rush

      @@andymac900 Piss-taking means they like your company and feel comfortable around you, strangely enough. Although, there is a fine line between taking the piss and insulting someone, which can be difficult to decifer even for native Brits. Newcastle is a great choice, Geordies are good natured people. Glad to hear that you're enjoying the UK!

Try googling Scottish inventors and you have literally papers and pages of our nation’s inventiveness. Only problem is that when we are winners we’re always British and Scottish if we lose 😂😂😂. Any I live in England so I am a traitor myself 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️. In the long run though nationalist thinking will destroy us humans we all live on Earth and it would be a great place if the was just one country called Earth - maybe then we could drop our flag waving and be altruistic about humanity which would give us a better chance of being around a lot longer. On the topic of food, I live in Canada and have the same experience when I travel to Europe in general. My son, who cannot eat wheat or dairy in N. America recently went to Wales for university for a year. He could eat ANYTHING! He felt so much better and actually attained a healthy weight which is tough for him here. I have even had medical professionals acknowledge the food quality in Europe. So yes. It is a thing. Lucky you for providing yourself a much healthier life. ❤

      @@SimpleScottishLiving I can remember years ago after my first trip to LA, returning to London Heathrow and being desperate for a plain tuna salad, no dressing lol. My indulgent side had loved the food in the USA and the massive portions but my body was crying out for nutrients it was missing. I must have looked like a crazed addict consuming that salad at the airport. What it taught me was to seek out the better restaurants when visiting the US and not go with big value fried breakfasts and dinners. I found you can eat perfectly fine in the USA, but the culture of mainstream eateries is definitely aimed at high fat, sugar and carbs, in a way that is much less acceptable here in the UK.

    As a Scot, after 9 years in my 20's living in NYC I married my wife a NJ Dentist and moved to Nashville and had 2 kids. After 4 years we moved back to Scotland 30 years ago, my wife never drilled again. I fully get your first 6 months, but a few key longer term points - our kids went to Glasgow and St Andrews (no fees), they both are married and now have 2 grandkids each (lots of full pay maternity and paternity leave). Scotland offers a great outdoors, but also job opportunities - be patient.
    Nice thing we have many friends who have come from all job types - they all go on many holidays and have a balanced attitude. In the US the commodity thats in short supply is time, long working weeks, little vacation time and little sick time. Go on enjoy yourself - I can tell you that over 30 years we NEVER thought about returning to the US and maybe even. less now! Cheers

Although you can prepay for 3, 6 or 12 months of unlimited prescriptions like I do.

Right after Halloween on the 5th of November we have Guy Fawkes Night/Bonfire Night which has passed here now so hopefully you got to see it at least, but next holiday will be the 30th November which is St Andrew's Day. People don't really celebrate St Andrew's Day as a Christian holiday but be aware that a lot of banks will be on holiday and the shops will be selling lots of haggis lol You can get vegetarian haggis easily if you're funny about offal but both are absolutely delicious and easy to cook. Christmas is special as we've got Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day so you get the triple holiday there, after that we've got Hogmanay on the 31st which is a HUGE holiday and it will be near impossible to get in to Edinburgh because of it but they air the celebrations on TV all night if anything lol Hogmanay consists of fire parades, marches, fireworks and concerts, but also in the Islands here we do some viking boat burning which is fun to see too. I hope y'all continue to have a great time here (and emphasis on checking out Hogmanay when it comes around! It's entirely unique to Scotland!)

    First time watching the channel and loved the video. I'm based in Stirling having moved up from England seven years ago and even I've had a little bit of a culture shock (in a good way). There is definitely a far more supportive and community feel in most of Scotland to down in southern England.
    One thing that may come as a bit of a shock to the system is just our dark our winters get. It's quite common for people around now to go through a bumpy patch with their moods, energy, etc. as they adjust to the days darkening.
    If you do notice anything like that it's absolutely worth picking up an SAD lamp and getting outside as much as possible on sunny days (though it sounds like you've got that nailed on).

    I really admire the way you get your family outdoors as much as possible to take advantage of the environment around your new home!
    I love the Scottish 'guising' tradition- so much more to it than just holding out a candy bucket. I wish that was more of a thing down here in England.
    Re the quality of food debate- I remember reading some testimony from an American who travelled to the UK for 3-4 weeks every year to visit her partner. As it was a vacation for them, they were eating out a lot, and treating themselves - not thinking about healthy eating at all. However, each time she returned home she found she'd lost a noticeable amount of weight. She could only think it was to do with what was in the food here (or not in the food here). I guess portion size would also be a factor.
    Interesting to hear your non-partisan thoughts on elections in the two countries. I think that maybe the biggest difference is that our election campaigns proper last 6 weeks only, and so they don't dominate so much of the news for so long as they do in the states. The other difference is that here there are strict limits on the amount that can be spent on an election campaign, and so relatively little time is spent on raising funds, and more time addressing the actual issues at stake. Obviously there is fundraising, but it takes place quietly throughout the year, every year, and not a big push in the run up to the election.
    Glad you have no regrets about your big move, and intend being here for the long haul.

    Absolutely, Hallowe'en is all about the community you grow up in. In the 90's, living in a village in the Campsie hills, our kids were wee, plenty families lived around us and Hallowe'en was really a big event, guising was prepared full of effort. And of course, Hallowe'en has its origins in Scotland and Ireland, transported to the US by settlers.

    Thinking of sending this to my son and daughter in law! They live in California too. I worry so much about their safety, especially the children with the gung ho attitude to guns etc. Now he that shall not be named has been voted in I am worry even more, especially for my granddaughters. So happy you have settled in so well, hope it all continues to go well and that you eventually find the jobs you both want and deserve. Safety was a big concern for us, but there are some wonderfully safe and exceptional areas of CA. It is such a personal decision to move, and income is a huge factor as well. I’m sure they’ll do what they feel best for their family, but for us, this was it. We couldn’t be happier!

    On the food question, just compare Heinz Ketchup ingredients in the US compared to UK, that will tell you all you need to know!
    Also, the US healthcare system tends to over treat and over prescribe. This is of course due to it being a money making industry. The NHS treats as necessary and is more efficient by being government funded. Waiting lists here have deteriorated under the last government, but hopefully the new one will improve this.

    • @Phiyedough
      @Phiyedough 12 днів тому +1

      I suspect the unhealthy food is also related to healthcare. In UK the government has a vested interest in keeping people healthy as it reduces strain on the NHS. In USA the opposite is true, illness is good for business.

    My son is married and works in Austin TX. He says that food is more processed and more costly. If you want normal type UK type foods in the USA you have to buy organic and that costs even more, also he eats more “world type foods”. The difference in the government election in the uk we have more political parties and independents. The UK has no service terms, our PM could be in power for as long as the country votes for them. UK voting is different in that it’s one person one vote and first past the post wins. To form a UK government a party needs to win a given number of seats - there is no state electoral seat system. If you’re buying a car in the UK I always buy diesel as petrol and diesel prices are reasonable similar, diesel being slightly higher per litre, but diesel cars travel more miles per litre than petrol, maybe a third or double the miles. All petrol stations sell petrol and diesel by default. Electric stations are increasing but electric cars are very expensive in the UK. Buying a house in Scotland has different rules to buying in England. If you offer in Scotland is accepted by the buyer that is locked in. In England you can make and offer and then lose the property to a higher offer - it’s called gazumping

    • @SimpleScottishLiving
      @SimpleScottishLiving  12 днів тому +1

      Thank you for all that information! Very interesting to hear from someone with experience in another US state! The Scottish home buying experience was stressful enough, never mind having the added stress of gazumping in England, crazy!

      @ you’re welcome. I’m Scottish born and was schooled in Africa. I returned to Scotland in 1974. I left Scotland for England and work. My 2 sons are in their mid thirties. Eldest is in Austin TX and had a PhD in mathematics and an American wife. My youngest still lives in the UK. We live near Sherwood Forest and my youngest is an Organic Chemist who works about 70 miles from my wife and myself. You correct about FaceTime or WhatsApp communication, it’s great to be able to talk but times zones are a pain. I became a Grandfather 2 days ago and all my experience of my first granddaughter has been virtual - not the same as being there. At 68 I am not as fit as I used to be so I’m not sure when I will get to give my granddaughter a good hug. Enjoy Scotland. Education is first class and if you’re still looking for work you should try hitting all the online jobs finder websites. As for your husband going back into law enforcement, he will have no gun and will not have the same USA risks as a USA policeman. Finally Scottish police are government employees not like in the States. Same for being a prison officer you work for the government. At your ages you could be eligible to train as a teacher and there is a shortage. Good luck 🤞 ❤️

      @ True both are really smart and as my wife of 46 year constantly reminds me that current genetic thinking attributes newborn intelligence more to the mothers genes than the father’s 😂😂🥰. My eldest son in TX was born in Bangour General Hospital, West Lothian ( now closed I believe). His younger brother was born in Leicester General Hospital. So sibling discussions when younger were somewhat heated at times one declaring he was a pure Scot like his parents were as the younger brother was actually English and might require a passport at sometime to visit his parents homeland. The battle of “ The Auld Enemy”. 😂😂. Keep your great content and positivity flowing on your channel. The moment you start using drones, pyrotechnics explosions and CGI Nessie, is when you might lose me 😂😂🤷‍♂️

    What a wonderful family! How on earth I stumbled on this video is down to the machinations of Google. I'm from Hexham, just outside of Newcastle and I was at primary school with lads from Glasgow, Newcastle. Edinburgh, Liverpool and Manchester and even now can happily translate from Scouse to English and vice versa, but it took me a good few minutes to adjust to Zach's accent, while Annie's was immediately clear!! Hybrid Scottish/Bay area accents are hard to pin down! Wish you all the very best of luck and hope you get sorted with work and/or sponsorships very soon, you are both very likable.
    Zach, I'm amazed that given the fact you were born in Scotland and have the experience and firearms training AND experience that you must have gained in the US, that the plods have not snapped you up? That three year rule seems like insanity given that you were in the US, not the PRC!! Are the Pongo's not even interested or the RMP at Faslane etc?

    • @SimpleScottishLiving
      @SimpleScottishLiving  9 днів тому

      Thank you so much for your kind comment. I'd like to think that a Scottish/Bay area accent is unique...therefore I'll take it as a compliment 🤣 Yes, the three year rule seems to be a common requirement across a number of fields I've looked at and from what I've read is due to requiring a standard anti-terrorist security/background check.
