Fly fishing the lower mainland of BC
The Bow River GRIND is a beautiful thing
In this video I am back fly fishing the Bow River around Calgary, Alberta, while out visiting family in the summer. This video spans 3 separate trips out at 3 different spots. The first day I met up with an early supporter and now friend, Rhetzky, who hooked the only fish, a nice looking 14-16 incher, on my streamer rod - sadly to lose the fish a few seconds later. We got the drone up in the air and took some cool aerial footage of the Bow River. The next session was a quick explore and didn't pan out, despite one missed hookset in good streamer water. Finally, the GRIND paid off at the third, nicest spot I visited. The Bow River Killer fly, a brown-red hybrid steelie worm, on the bottom of a drop shot rig, is always a good choice for big brown trout. This fish gave me a hell of a fight and took me down with the current, only to be landed in a nice eddy and released pretty quickly thereafter. All in all, I consider the bow river grind to be a beautiful thing when it all pays off in the end! Thanks for watching - I know this is a longer video but hopefully it's one you enjoy with coffee or in the background while doing chores! ;)

Gorgeous fish dude, wow. Just a question! How do you like the 8 fans waders? I have a pair of simms but they do tend to get some holes sometimes!
Thanks! The 8fans waders basically are just a semi barrier from wet and cold. They have a bunch of holes and I've torn a hole in the bootfoot neoprene. I've patched it all up with aquaseal but it's all leaky. Which is fine with me tbh! I'm pretty cheap and pretty tough on gear, I'm quite sure I'd put holes in any pair of waders. Also these came in XXL which was very important for me!! 😊
@@RosinFlyFishing so awesome!! thanks for your reply my man (: really appreciate it
I have Tenkara rods, and I tie my own flies, and have not had any problem with any of the equipment. Tenkara rods and accessories are not for everyone, and they are not idiot proof.
I'm sorry, it's a troll post. Totally user error 😂
Not a good thing
Nope!
can't you eat the fish?
NO!! Never any fish from the Bow!!
I see a lot of people in the comments just now figuring out that UA-cam shorts are only clickbait titles.
Yep, I'm part of the problem tbh
What a great and informative video! There are a lot of monetisation videos out there but very few mention fishing as a niche. I’m now less than 100 from my 1000 subs and am a little excited 😊
That's awesome dude I hope you get there and then blow past!! As a small update I didn't end up making as much as I expected because after Christmas the ads go way down, plus I couldn't keep up the weekly videos/good videos! But I'm still grinding haha. Tight lines 😎
Just seeing this video now. Dude, fishing dropper flies is illegal in BC rivers. Check your regs before you fish.
Haha you didn't pay close attention, I cut the hook off the big dry so it's just an indicator that lets me know if they might also take a dry 🤙
@@RosinFlyFishing Fair enough, but you might have a hard time convincing a CO you're in the right. "It's unlawful to angle with a fishing line to which more than one artificial fly is attached (i.e., to use “dropper flies”)." It doesn't say anything about whether the hook has been clipped. Personally I think the law is kind of silly, but those are the rules. On my local river we can't even use indicators (floats) in the fly fishing section to dangle a nymph, but outside of it you can float fish all you want.
@@automaticmike fortunately I'd have video showing my intentions if an officer ever came asking. It's an interesting question whether removal of the hook from what would become an assortment of a short metal shank with foam and color materials is fundamentally different from classical bobber. I think this would be pretty subjective, so that video footage might be the only saviour! I've never fished the fly only sections of VI systems but I've read those regs and they are pretty restrictive but it sounds like a fun challenge 😂
When you’re in Vancouver area once again, would you mind trying out Gold Creek in golden ears park? I heard it has some nice bulls as well as resident rainbows. Love your content, tight lines!
It's on my fish list, thanks for the reminder! Maybe I'll plan a day trip with my family :)
I will take either! Love our content too and I’m from the same area.
Sorry mate, giveaway is finished!!
I thought it would be higher and I only have 129 subs😢 I’m trying to get monetized so I can buy a fly tying kit. I used to post everything but I focus more on fishing now. I just got a fly rod and am starting to get into it.❤
Unfortunately actually its lower than I predicted for me personally, by about 40%. Partly bad/unpopular videos and also after Christmas ads die off for a while. Ah well, such is life! Good luck with the grind mate!!
can you tell me where it's safe to consume fish in Calgary? I was reading on forums that the bow is very polluted and shot not be consumed. One person said even if you go beyond the dam, the water from Banff is polluted and comes into Calgary. I'm completey confused as to where you can safely consume fish without worrying about eating toxins and too much mercury. It seems like you have to go an hour out of the City to be able to catch and eat fresh fish.
Retention (keeping fish) is NOT allowed from the Bow River and many other flowing rivers and streams in Alberta. Please check your regulations! If you want to catch to eat the fish you have to find specific places where to go. I don't know any of these, sorry. Easiest to buy the fish you like from the store tbh
@@RosinFlyFishing Glenmore reservior has limitations on fish that is allowed to be kept, but it's still attached to the bow river. I couldn't find anything that says where calgarians are allowed to catch and eat fish. Do you know if isolated ponds such as Eagle lake and Mclean pond would be safe to consume? I'm totally new to fishing, so there's tons of information I don't know.
Will an 8wt work for trout if that’s all I got im out brook trout fishing and going today
Yup of course! Just don't yank on hooksets, you will yeet the fish 😂
Hey rosin, I love your videos and I’m new to fly fishing and I’m wondering where this creek is so I can try to catch my first trout on a fly rod. Also how do you find your fishing spots, is there an app. I try googling for creeks and nothing pops up so I’m wondering how you find these? When I’m fishing a river with wader, where it I put my net with out it going in the water?
I use a magnet system and carabiners to clip my net to my waist belt, or backpack. Others just lose their nets on the river quite often lol. Not me! As for spot finding, it can be tough. It's just a google maps satellite mode search game, followed by maybe some internet hints of systems, followed by checking if a stream is considered a 'tributary' of a larger system, and then checking regulations to see if that system includes tributaries in it's regulations, then checking regulations to see if it's open and if certain species are restricted, and then beyond that sometimes there are first nation territory lands that are not legal unless you have permission, and then there are provincial parks, and national parks with their own regulations. It's a lot of effort sometimes, that's just the reality! But it's good to start with big systems on google maps and then follow them upstream to smaller blue lines, find the names, look at them on satellite mode looking for accessible spots/roads, deep runs or riffles, etc
I decided to check out this spot today after watching your video. I only caught one brown trout, but he was my PB! Thanks for making the video and sharing the spot!
Can you fish in spots where they say no fishing?
Haha well, no. Plus, this dock is fully destroyed and not usable anymore after a king tide wrecked it
This stretch looks pretty good, I'm surprised you only got 1
Is this a private dock?
Semi private, but I'm not at liberty to disclose sorry!
Beaut brownie, worth the trip from BC.
For sure!
Welcome back to Cowtown! I don't want to disclose your location but you might want to know that drones are prohibited in this area.
Thanks for letting me know! Usually if it's a 'strict' no fly zone like due to air traffic, the DJI app will fully override your ability to go above 10 meters. So I presume this is more of a local regulation/prohibition?
Whats your line setup? From fly line to the leech?
I start 4 feet under an indicator. Move down a foot every 15 min if no action. I've gone as deep as 16 feet and I've heard of them deeper, but hook sets get tough! If they are taking midges on surface, you can go 1-3 foot down and test a chironomid pattern. Usually they dial in on a specific color when that's happening and they will hammer that, and ignore everything else!
Strokin the trout a bit
What does that mean haha
Great eh I live here 😮
Sorry if I burned your nearest hole !
@@RosinFlyFishing I would catch tons or used to

Should have let me know you were here and do coffee
This was last summer actually!! But Calgary trips are always jam packed it's tough to even hit the water
nice brown
Thanks!
Been depressed for a while and havent gone fishing much, i honestly really miss it when i watch videos. I know once i force myself out to fish, id be in my happy place again.
Next time you head for a drive to the lake/river, just bring your fishing gear with you. Don't feel pressured to go fishing. If you just feel like going for a hike or even sit in your vehicle, that's ok.
Sorry to hear that mate. Fishing is a good mental health release for me. But sometimes just waking up is hard enough. I hope you have some supports to lean on and chat with. Maybe they will even go fishing with you and chat while you're out. Brain chemistry is a son of a b****. The crisis phone lines in Calgary can be a good place to chat and find supports, in case you ever need it: 403-266-4357
This is a great idea too, thanks for speaking up :)
It's been about 14 years since I fished the bow. I used to fish around 22x when I was a kid, like '99. Makes me kinda sad and happy seeing it. Where the hell has time gone. 😢
Idk, time is flying! Go do something nostalgic this weekend! :)
Good job bro!!
Thanks!
Good fight, beautiful fish, and amazing footage. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Joe!
I used to live within a 5 minute drive to multiple spots on the Bow, all in the same area this video is in (deep south)... Congrats on the great Brown ! There's an old video on my channel where I caught a nice one close to where you were, across from Fish Creek Park. 👍🏻
There is some good water and even some that isn't often targeted within the city! Very fortunate to have this beautiful river running through :)
My heart started racing when you hooked up with that big brown!
Haha mine too!
The legend is back on the Bow!
That's a stretch haha
Dude, I haven’t caught a fish on the bow in two years. You landing a 6 inch whitefish would make you a legend in my books, just saying.
Great video 👍🏻 as always 💯
Thanks!
one of my fav river !! glad to see you back in action!
Love the Bow!
@@RosinFlyFishing have you done any searun this year??
Man multiple hooks on a line just feels wrong. Do they even make you go barbless there?
Haha if you start in Alberta, coming here feels so limiting ;). Some waters are barbless yes!
@@RosinFlyFishing ah so not the rivers like here in bc. I will take the limiting sportsmanship of a single barbless fly anyday. There are reasons the bow river is in the state it is now and these kind of regulations sure don't help.
Awesome fish dude!
He was pretty!
Beautiful!!!
Agree!
Beautiful fish, what a memory for you 🙌
Thanks!
That was hella generous of @troutflies to grant you permission to use his song! That brown was a-mazing! Congrats
Haha well according to my notes I actually used it first...
The birds understood their assignments. So much nice water to cover, do you ever see people fishing double hand Scandi set ups?
Yes, yes they did! And yes I have seen a few people do double hand fly fishing. They remind me of the Squamish crowd, chill and just out for fun :)
Awesome brown trout man!
Thanks Bob!
It's exciting to see the bow again on this channel. Beautiful video, thanks for the recognition! Hopefully we can get back out there sometime and have a little more luck.
Hope so! Would love to throw the streamer some more
@@RosinFlyFishing for sure 👍 maybe a little more hidden of a spot too.
@@rhetzkyflyfishing Yeah the further south the better
Beautiful river and scenery. But video has insane amount of advertising to the point it becomes annoying. Tide lines
Ah, sorry about that. UA-cam sticks a good amount of ad slots into videos these days but often doesn't 'use' them all, but if the timing is right for companies paying, they will use every single one! Sorry mate! A little gas money for me helps though! :)
Sure is a beautiful thing! 😊
Yup!!
Congrats!🎉
