Capilano salmon suck and egg eating trout are better

- I had an hour and a bit to fish so I hit the Capilano River with my CSO Stave 8 wt fly rod looking for coho salmon. Some coho and even chinook were there, but they weren't biting. I finished the quick session scouting for egg eating trout in small runs and found one willing to play on my first cast, making the trip well worth it. Trout are better than salmon, and the Capilano salmon in particular are stupid.

Next time try one with a chartreuse head and purple body, maybe a little flash tied in. Those colors are great for late season coho. I kayaked the cap at least 100 times back when I lived in the area, but never fished it.
Thanks Petr, I will try this color combination next year. I'm going to be dipping my toes into fly tying over the holidays so I'll see if I have the materials to attempt this. Out of curiousity, do you have thoughts on why the chartreuse beads are of interest to the coho? Perhaps it's a simple attention grabber/attractor and then they key in on the rest of the fly profile before committing to the bite.
Woo, the cap bugger comes through (even if it was a bow). Looked like a hatchery clipped one, just a bow that didn't want to become a steelhead.
Woohoo! Thanks for the fly! I agree about the fish, no adipose fin :)
I often wonder how people land fish from that spot on the cable pool?
Haha long handle nets normally. In my case, laying down with long arms extending down. But I don't catch salmon so it's not an issue 😂
You don't catch salmon because you won't listen to an expert here. To catch salmon you have to be on the bottom. That fly has to be infront of its mouth. Only Atlantic Salmon and steelhead will come up for a fly
When eggs are on, they're on. Does the sun every shine there :P
No Eric it really does not lol
Are you using a full sink tip?
I was using about 16 ft of sink tip and letting it get down, the fish were quite stale this was after quite a few days without rain in early October
@@RosinFlyFishing coho it's all in the strip and you need to be touching bottom
