Good Game or just Nostalgia? - Heroes of Might and Magic 3

Today I decided to make a video (hopefully the first in a series) where I see if an old game is ACTUALLY good, or if it's overhyped due to nostalgia. I have never played Heroes of Might and Magic 3 before, so I thought it would be the perfect example to kick off this debate. did not expect to see an irish girl talking about painkiller today lmao. from dublin here, gas to hear the accent. i actually went to see fatal1ty play vo0 at the CPL summer 05 in painkiller black, one of my fondest childhood memories. i wish they'd remake it today, would love to have the physics + bunnyhops back. the speed was just breakneck. the stakegun is such a great fps weapon I remember loving watching enemies getting pinned on the wall. whoever worked on the level & art design was definitely a student of european architecture and culture at one point. love the european historical gothic imprint on the game in general, it's so tastefully done as a backdrop to blazing fast fps and metal. ironically the new doom game coming out i feel is probably unconsciously borrowing from it a lot. the enemy types are also really original which is just so rare these days, you see the same typical body horror blobby stuff so often. this is really from the era of spikey sharp things and skulls where everyone took things a lot less seriously would love to see a remake for the movement alone but would have to be done right

The sound track is the glue that holds the imagination... it's the memory of it... anytime you hear it you automatically think of your younger self playing (for me it was 20 years ago)....

I remember my first steps in WoW, right after the server gone online, were breathtaking. It was like walking around in Warcraft 3, you've seen places and characters you've known from the RTS. The comic look was so amazing, the ambiente in each region remarkable and unique. After UO2tSA and DAoC this was a world, you immerse into in a way you didn't knew before it would be possible and you were excited to explore, fight, questing or just sitting on a hill or fishing with a friend and chatting. People were friendly, liked to meet new people abd become friends and played in partys with strangers, not only for the actual 1 minute quest. Other MMOs come and go, but IMO no one reached what Blizzard created back then.

Where was this video when classic intially came out. I dismissed it thinking "I played it once, why would i go back and re-write my memories" but after playing and dropping retail continously since legion because i last about 3 months at a time, probably due to option paralysis, i've realised that the reason i loved the game pre-WoD is it was far, far slower paced.

The bosses were fucking phenomenal, I played Painkiller when I was little, and it took me until Darksiders to find another game where you fight gigantic monsters for bosses. I get it that its hard to do well, and the nature of Painkiller sort of made the bosses quite repetitive, but they were awesome as hell

the closest I've found to recreating those experiences is the turtle wow private server. the added quests and content really brings the life back into it, and its populated enough that you'll always find other real people out in the real world.

Funny. I saw a Kungen clip talking about the constant stimuli in retail. I think you are both right about that taking away that feeling of home. There is definitely something special about vanilla. Also, your eyes should be illegal.

But there are also people like me who played from like 2004-2009-10ish and just picked it back up a few weeks ago. Yes, I remember where most things are and the locations for the common NPC's, but I know once I get into Westfall, Duskwood, etc. that I'll have some quests pop up that I don't remember or didn't even do back in the day. I played until Lich King came out, and never max-leveled any of my characters, so I haven't even beat the game. I also never used to raid, I'd just joint small groups and do dungeons like Deadmines and the like. So, even though I explored every region and know where most things are, there is a sliver of me that it will still be "new" to, in a sense. Plus, after 10+ years of not playing, you *will* forget some things. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there like me, or I at least hope so!

Would it be helpful to play a game and be able to hotkey swap the language to your native tongue? Or is it better to just go hard mode and play in a foreign language? I find videogames x language learning a very fascinating subject :D

1000% agree with you. I have never heard anyone explain it the way you did, and you did a phenomenal job explaining what’s good and what’s bad about WoW. I hope Blizzard sees this video and learn from it. We need WoW 2, new zones but with the simplicity of vanilla. No additional races, no more extra stuff. Just relaxing beautiful zones we can adventure in! Maybe new professions or a twist that makes us explore the game more.
