The hair would be as tall as their ego but they failed to find a barber who could handle that demand knowing that all barbers that aren't high elves are inferior they had to settle with a lower hair. But then the audacity of the other elves to copy the style. which is why we don't see it in Skyrim.
Oblivion's Character Creation is unironically one of the most (intentionally & unintentionally) endearing gaming memories from my pipsqueak days. Nostalgia (for simpler times)
DUDE, YES! Playing Oblivion when it came out is what inspired me to grow my hair out, and I used to wear my hair in the "windbraids" style from the game for ages. x3
@@Angelikatosh Have you considered seeing if they're available on Kindle? If not, have you considered using an Elder Scroll to make it so they always were available on Kindle?
What you said about Orc hairstyles is so true! They're not only prettier and distinct but also provide a lot of characterization for them. I was quite upset at the lack of long flowing elven locks, but I can appreciate the wacky hairstyles now. Little things like these aren't talked about enough! Thank you for your work!
Great take on a really underrated way the devs try to get a point across. I agree the hairs are lackluster, but at least the little windswept stuff seems to call to the Cloudruler Temple stuff - almost like the game artists saw concepts for everything and thought "ooh that's something exotic we can draw on". One thing is for sure, like you said, even Oblivion gives more variety of hairstyles than your average street corner IRL.
That's what I always chalk it up to. That and everyone's high/light voices (I'm thinking dunmer, and all the male orcs and nords who sound like your beloved favourite uncle). Hoitytoity high fashion capitol people.
I'm really happy you're covering things like ordinary clothing, town banners and now, hairstyle. A lot of creators focus on the history, and the mythology behind the ES, but its the things like this that make a world feel lived in.
One of my favorite Oblivion creations was a pretty realistic character. She was a Breton named Chari LeMonde. She had mi-long auburn hair and realistic facial features. On the flipside...well, I had an Imperial character named Honker Nez whose face was approximately 50% nose.
10:30 that's so true, you can even tell the area of the country or social class sometimes, at least here in Britain where that's still a fairly prominent thing.
Maybe a video on Oblivion jewellery would be really interesting, plenty of pretty unique rings and amulets. My favourite being the Talisman of Abetment from the shivering isles
@@Angelikatosh No worries! I find it interesting that in this game I can actually tell apart the human ethnicities, unlike in Skyrim, where everything is a bit more homogeneous
No see, this is actually a hint toward the deep lore that the Imperials and the Nords are effectively originally the same race, as they both descend from the Nedes of Atmora. The Imperials are just the Nedes that settled in Cyrodiil and the Nords are the Nedes that settled in Skyrim.

I'm so glad someone is making videos like these, critiquing oblivion in such a unique way. When it's all done it'd be great to have this video as a long form supercut!
Bosmer with leaf's/flowers or other nature things used as hair accessories is an idea I need to see realized. I'd also love to see more clothes from outside whatever province the games take place in. For example a merchant or character that is visiting the Cyrodil from Skyrim could be overdressed and have dialogue complaining its too hot. While a traveler from Blackmarsh could be wearing something more simple and short so it doesn't get dragged in the marshes, but end up in Bravil cold and underdressed. Just more stuff to show off the individuality and cultures of the other races.
Seeing the character creator again made me look up and realize that Wilburgur's iconic, but questionably named character Autism Cat was created about six years ago. Time flies.
It's been a long time since I last played Oblivion and seeing all the art work pop really reminds how good the hand drawn art looks. The skill and race art just has a really nice colour palette and style, it's very iconic.
Oblivion for all its many faults; is perhaps the most timeless of all the TES games. Its just such an unique vibe that will never ever be made again. Its so genuine and so hard to take seriously at the same time (with big exceptions in key moments); its just a genuinly great experience
I've never thought about it like that, but I totally agree with you about hairstyle following fashion trends. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but it totally makes sense Here in Argentina, a few years ago, you would easilly tell who was argentinian, chinese, bolivian or peruvian by their hairstyle, but now a days almost everyone uses the same hairstyle
Polish guys in Poland also wear the same haircut so it's not just Ireland specific fashion but who knows maybe it came from Polish immigrants coming back to Poland from Ireland in Poland with Irish hairstyle and it grew popular in Poland. Ireland
I gave Polish as a general example, but really any other Europeans/others that come here end up getting all the same hairstyles , they eventually develop the same accent too - so you can’t tell them apart from Irish lads! 😅
I saw the thumbnail and started laughing hysterically at the NPC hairstyles. Oblivion had the goofiest hairstyles, but I suppose that's one of the main things that makes this game endearing. Thanks for making these videos! I like how you're diving into topics most folks didn't think to talk about.
Funnily enough, the barber I go to usually does the same hairstyle you mentioned for most of their customers. I usually just get a generic trim to make it short when it gets too long.
I will always be offended by the fact that the only good looking hairstyle (in my opinion) was wore by those "Spider Daedras"... I hate them just for that 😆😆😆😆
This is why I always go with Argonian, the character builder is nightmare fuel enough without adding hair, it is hard to go wrong with horns. That... And poison resistance.
I've always been a bit weird amongst my friends cos I love Oblivion's faces. It's genuinely made me wonder if there's something I can't see in human faces that other people can. Cos to me Oblivion faces look more natural that Skyrim's very wrinkly ones!
If we're talking hairstyles, I think this is one chance to also talk about Skyrim's hairs since they're surprisingly more versatile and more variative than ever.. Also beards.
I think in the german version of the game loose is called colovian loose and the wind braids are called nibenese wind braids. (Colovia and Nibenay are regions of Cyrodiil). It took me 18 years to notice that's not the case in the english version.
Its so weird that i'm back watching oblivion vids. The nostalgia... And then you make morrowind and soon wow game vids as well. Did i step into a time portal?
I'm slightly disappointed you didn't give yourself the onion hair for the thumbnail! Honestly though even though the character creator was a little goofy you can't argue they didn't put the effort in for the era it came out. I'd forgotten they had a hair length slider, even most modern games don't do that (although I think that may be partly due to the way hair cards are set up in more recent games?)
Maybe you should do a tour of Cyrodils citys and comment on the fashion. Also if you you ever get daggerfall unity go through some of the outfits there are some wild options plus you can layer a lot of clothes for interesting results.
It would be cool if, in the new game, each group had it's own unique culturally specific hairstyle that you could unlock for your character by doing side quests and gaining local favour.
I don't know how to donate on the VODs of the livestreams if its not live. So this is for Cheetos adventures part 4, even though this video is also pretty good.
I really hope they bring back the upswept hairstyle for the elves in the next Elder Scrolls game. I want to battle against Thalmor soldiers who look like they just came out of a soft serve ice cream machine.

Yes, I grouped orcs with the elves. What are you gonna do about it?
Well, they are orsiMER. So, you're not wrong
Agree with you becasue you're right, they're OrsiMER for a reason 😌
The Altmer are in SHAMBLES
They're both mer races anyway. Gotta thank Trinimac and Boethia for that.
They're technically elves.
My personal head canon for the Altmer hair was they were having a bad case of hat hair after taking off their Colovian Fur Helms.

DUDE, YES! Playing Oblivion when it came out is what inspired me to grow my hair out, and I used to wear my hair in the "windbraids" style from the game for ages. x3
Don't forget! There's a secret hairstyle worn by the mothpriests that's reminiscent of a chonmage, which was basically *the* samurai hair cut.

My first ever Oblivion character, a Breton who I named "Sir Gunther the Mystic", had the "windswept" hairstyle ✨.
Played 240hrs on that character...
Really happy that the Adoring Fan haircut is in Baldurs gate 3
Thumbnail game is on point. Oblivion had a thing for making people look like onion heads.
Yes, I got the impression that Cyrodiil has a very cosmopolitan culture. So it would make sense that hairstyles and clothing reflect this.

But no-one speaks about Oblivion beardstyles.
because only sheogorath is allowed to have a beard
well. a real beard. miss me with the scruff.
They be posting long bearded wizards on posters and books when the beardest person is only some blue fades on their cheeks and jaw.
beard styles? oh you mean *adjusts beard sliders* *character's skin turns blue*
