      I think it's a phase.
A very long phase, make no mistake.
But nearing 40 years old there is no way I can still enjoy the strategy games I loved in the 90s. Because the challanges are dominated at first try now, and the gameplay variety is shallow.
Maybe I played only a few matches on Civilization 6 compared to the thousand of hours spent on Civ5, but I have to admit that Civ5 gameplay isn't as variated where in Civ6 some leaders change the standard game rules entirely.
I also loved the soudtracks but I can listen those elsewhere.
I love my 90s games but they can't be the best forever

Corporations ruin everything they touch. Perhaps accepting this Wealth Distribution system based on Greed and Competition was a bad idea after all (it definitely was). It's not like the real Leftists didn't warn us before the Fascist uprisings a century ago, let alone people like me trying to get people in the 80's to understand how this road is always paved and how the 80's "neo-liberalism" (nothing to do with Liberalism) was just history rhyming all over again.

      4. Most important of them all: you can play them with a garbage PC.

    • @mhult5873
      @mhult5873 2 місяці тому +17

      5. And many of they are real games, meaning real stories and storytelling - focusing on gameplay. Not focus on micro-transactions, paying for being able to play multiplayer/online and no focus on in-game equality without a story, but instead focusing on the actual story.
This video of Angelikatosh describes it in a good way, in my opinion. I have no problem with any character with a good story and gameplay. But not with a artificially unrealistically designed character randomly inserted without a story - actually not with any character without a story.
One example is Battlefield V, where non-historical accurate characters appears without any backstory or explanation. When the gamers of Battlefield-series expect to play in a fictional, but somewhat historical accurate, game.
There is a reason some good games from say 30 years ago have better gameplay than modern games. They had to have this. Story, background music, dialogue because of the limits in graphical hardware. Modern games, that are not good, focus on graphics, micro transactions and some kind of equality that the people buying the games don´t want.

Oblivion was just about the literal start of DLC, unfortunately. I just pirated my horse armor. Most Oblivion DLC was just an extra knife or whatever. They had the Knights of the Nine or whatever that had a quest at least, but I don't remember that being very long.
I thought DLC was shit when that came out, and I haven't really changed my mind.

Here's my reasons for sticking to old games. (And with that I mean playing old games I haven't played before. Not playing the same games over and over. I always prefer something new over nostalgia. I seem to be alot less nostalgic in general than most people.):
    1) They're actually complete, polished and have their bugs fixed.
    2) They run very well on a cheap PC.
    3) They're past the hype/hate phase, so the ratings are more reliable.
    4) They're dirt cheap.
    5) No modern nonsense like not working without an internet connection or having to register somewhere.
    6) Pay once and then actually fully own the game.
You just get a much better deal overall and with less headaches.

My grandmother survived the Great Depression, gave birth to 18 children and raised 33 children. She could pull a hot pot out of an oven without mitts or towels. She could grab a chicken in each hand give them a flip and instantly break both of their necks, and have them fried up ready to eat in an hour. Made pies out of anything and everything, made new clothes from scraps. Scrubbed, cleaned, cooked, sewed and tended sick children all day every day for decades. Cried when I graduated college (I was the first of her grandchildren to do so) and said it had all been worth it because the future would be better than the past.
She was old fashioned and traditional, and people would call her misogynist and racist today. The woman who told me to be a good boy and not be cruel to women, and to not call people bad things just because of what color they were because people should be judged for who they are and not what they are. And she never, ever insisted any of her daughters, granddaughters etc. had to be like her, she just made sure they could be if they wanted to.
She had to get one of her boys or grandsons to take out the trash for her because it was too heavy. Couldn't pull start a lawnmower. My dad and I would have to fix her house every time we visited.
Strongest woman I ever knew. Her blood was battery acid.
She survived so much shit that would destroy me and most other modern people. She would not be impressed by contemporary depictions of female power. And she'd probably laugh at most contemporary tradwives but more in the way a pro laughs at a rookie.
I'm convinced most creators of modern media have never seen a strong woman and don't know how to depict one.

If you're not enjoying modern gaming, here's a list of retro video games that I think everyone should play through at least once (I consider any game before the HD era in the 7th generation as retro):
    1. Resident Evil 4 (2005)
    2. Super Metroid
    3. Super Mario Bros 3
    4. Ninja Gaiden Black
    5. Metal Gear Solid 1-3

    13. Half Life 2
    14. Deus Ex
    15. Doom (1993)
    16. Final Fantasy VI & VII (1997) & X
    17. Resident Evil 2 (1998)
    18. Silent Hill 2 (2001)

It's so easy to make my character look so good in this game, especially with outfit mods. I think so many devs have forgotten the fact that many women around the world grew up playing barbies when they were kids. We love dressing up our characters, making them look pretty. I agree with most of what was said here.
I've said this on stream a few times, but my gaming library is large enough that assuming no new games ever came out from now on, I'd have enough games to cycle through and not be bored for the rest of my life.
Growing older has made me understand that I only benefit from not buying a game on release in waiting to see not only is it good or bad, but also how the developers patch it. Preorders and day one players are paid beta testers.
Unless you are a graphics snob, which I don't think you or I are, mechanically older games in general have more to offer. With RPGs specifically, they aim for more of a tabletop simulation aspect, as opposed to the more modern action-adventure focus. Honestly? I like both. But I'm not devastated anymore if a new game I like doesn't come out, or a new game that comes out isn't for me. I'm not the target audience and that's ok.

They should've waited to patch the game until a few months AFTER everyone got their early access time in and the few days head start they had vs everyone else in terms of progression had normalized. Then it wouldn't have felt like they wasted their money. The sad part is that one of the rewards they doled out as an apology was a skin/outfit for the game that couldn't even be used because it wasn't compatible with the newer game version!!
It's a shame really because Outlaws was the first SW game in a long time that wasn't published by EA and although Ubisoft hasn't been much better recently in terms of people having faith in them as developers, I was really looking forward to playing it, but the ugly look they gave the protagonist and the myriad of frame rate issues and repetitive stealth portions and puzzles you have to solve in order to progress really turned me off...I want no part of that game now

It's always about money, that's what every business/company (that isn't a recognised/registered charity) is all about. The sole purpose of a business is to return profit to shareholders...
These Diversity people are basically nutjobs who demand equality of outcome which itself doesn't make sense. They are also trying to gender swap already well established IPs, such as forcing a female James Bond and female lead remakes we've seen such as Ghostbusters, etc. Ultimately these attempts offend more people (large numbers of women) by doing this than the number of people who were offended originally by not obsessing so much about Diversity.
People, regardless of gender or identity, enjoy a compelling story and characters and as long as developers are given the freedom to create them, then they will be created and the general public will endorse the best creations of the current time with their wallets. People are fed up of pandering to the diversity cause and all people want is captivating original content being made.

    • @Longknife
      @Longknife 2 місяці тому +32

The problem with that mindset is that at the end of the day, it's the product that matters and the product that should come first. Diversity is *NOT* a necessity for a good product. Lisa the Painful for example has one female character total, as it's a major plot point for the story. That doesn't stop the game from being an absolute banger. The game had great gameplay, great humor, and really unique and funky music that was surprisingly catchy.
Of course money and results will catch up to that. It's like if one company is selling a toilet plunger that works and gets the job done easily, and another country sells one that's cheap quality, breaks frequently, but they plastered the LGBT flag all over it and proudly claim they donate 5 cents to Palestine after every purchase: dude I don't care if your TOILET PLUNGER is pro-LGBT, I just need to unclog my ****ing toilet!
The product and service comes first. *Always.* Those that fail to recognize this will die out on the free market. Yes, it's taken remarkably long for this to finally happen (feels like DEI and "woke" measures showed their face in 2012), but this year has been an absolute bloodbath for such media. Even Disney seems like it's starting to recognize the problem it's insisted on for years now.

Racism can make games more interesting. Imagine playing Skyrim, and having to do quests in a city where you're not welcome because of your race. Imagine the guards at the gates of Solitude aggressively not letting you in, and you having to figure out another way into the city. You might even be limited to only wander around in the city at night with stealth. It would open up so many interesting gameplay possibilities, and it would make different races more interesting and meaningful, and add a lot of replayability to the game, and maybe even a lot more depth to the game's world.
Heck, it would even end up being a great way to illustrate why racism is bad.

That's a reason I like old janky games where some of the game/level design decision made no sense and were quirky, but that was the real magic behind it. It was some dudes coming together and making videogames with a passion. Nowadays a lot of games are so hand holding and stripped away from their good classic elements as there are corporations who want to take the safe road, extremely sanitize the gameplay to avoid confusing the average player, it's a soulless production machine. Only indie games sometimes capture that old feeling of people coming together in small teams or as lone developers to work on their own passion.

One of the best thing morrowind offers is having a personality as dump stat and just have everyone hating on you just for them to slowly turn around as you level up, raise your renown and fame, rise through guild ranks slowly making a name for yourself in the world. And then all of a sudden you realize how much nicer (almost) everyone is towards you. Also factions friction and disposition lowering when you join one or the other. And you can wear different gloves on each hand and robes over armor and pants underneath it? What a mindblowing concept! Also having original theme with tight vision, not just some UE5 free shop accessories just slapped together to create "a game". In short, my faith in BGS died long ago, their trend of what they gonna do with next game(s) is clear and they just gonna shit on their golden goose formula even more, possibly even outright killing it instead of building upon it/polishing it. Anyway, it won't matter coz people gonna buy it just like they did Midfield and think it's great stuff. "depiction does not equal endorsement"
What a powerful statement! Not only for games, but also for any form of entertainment nowadays.
I wish developers would be able to experiment like they could 20 years ago. By trying to provide a complete package so people would buy it, enjoy it and spread the word so more people would buy it. I don't need a representation of what media depicts as important topics to discuss. I just want to have a good time. Heck, I've learned more about morals and standards from games than from any talk show or news coverage.

Nice video. I really find myself gravitating back to older games. I feel like something was lost from those times. Depth and immersion are two things that I really enjoy and modern games are losing those things. Thankfully, indie developers feel the same as we do and are helping recreate those amazing experiences. Remember the Thief games? Those were some of the most atmospheric and immersive games ever made, with unparalleled level and sound design. It had so much character and the environments and world itself told a story. You knew you were in this dark steampunk world and you didn't have to have hours of exposition vomited at you when you start the game. I will always appreciate someone that enjoys the classics!

Yeah 100% agree with you, I like older games too, Oblivion is one of my favourites, VTM Bloodlines 1 also, games like that. Modern games are suffering from issues these days, there are a lot of real world issues being brought into games, it is a little tiring tbh. Everywhere you look "the narrative" is being pushed. I don't know about you but I play games to escape reality for a little while and immerse myself in a world of fantasy, not to be reminded of issues going on in the world. Older games didn't suffer from this, there was a freedom in the creative process that just isn't allowed in a lot of cases. Thanks for the video, it was a breath of fresh air. :)
