Homestead Living Alaska
Приєднався 3 лип 2023
We moved from Oregon to Alaska in November of 2016 to seek more solitude, more challenges, and extreme adventures.
Our family of 6 walked away from the suburban lifestyle by choice to live off grid in the remote wilderness of Alaska.
We are working with minimal equipment and little money to transform 160 acres of raw land into a functioning homestead.
Extreme weather, pesky insects, and large animals are just a few of the obstacles we will encounter on our journey.
As we build up our off grid Alaska homestead, we will share our knowledge of what we are learning as we go.
This will range from building, gardening, basic winter survival, preserving food, making cutting boards, firewood processing, felling trees to doing product reviews we believe in!

Great video 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
It seems like the weather is wacky everywhere this year. Snow in Florida and rain in Alaska, How nuts is that. 96+ hours below freezing this week and snow/rain forcasted for next week in central OK. Thanks for sharing..
Great video!! Thanks for having me over, it was fun!! My Dad makes the same comments when I’m cleaning the trucks lol!
Thanks for helping us, we appreciate it!!
So sweet
Thank you!
I think Brady likes cleaning up after everyone. Hudson , show us how to make the stovetop cookies. They look yummy. Hard working Family!!
Thank you. Yes, thank goodness for Brady!! The stovetop cookies are great and quick to make too!
Good job. Nice young woman 🤔🧐... You must be getting close with the siding. Love the round boards
Yes she is sweet... she is also a great helper too!
Nice!
Thank you!
Great video , I enjoyed watching it (pierre - belgium)
You guys be safe we have had brutal cold winter and snow here more than you Alaska be safe and great videos 🔥🔥👍😀
Isn't this crazy weather???? Weird! Thanks for watching us!
Hey friend to you ever make Mullen ? I heard it’s good for your lungs ? Thank you and god Bless
Yes! It's a great thing for sure! We love love natural remedies. We love chaga too. Devils club however is my top favorite...of course it's the hardest to process too! Lol
@ can you tell me how to make it is it like tea?
Yes. We have used a tea ball for that...
GREAT video, Sarah. I have used apple cider vinegar for years, and as you say, it really is a wonderful cure all, especially for acid reflux. Thank you for teaching us how to make it😊.
Absolutely. We love it. It is much better than store bought for sure!!
Warm outside? I got the heat on in my house down here in Florida! Is this vinegar the same you buy in the store? I make my own distilled water for my plants. You drink it to loose weight? Never knew that about birch. Great to know this. Thanks Sarah.
Heat on in Florida? Now that's something you don't hear much! Lol. Yes it's the same you buy at the store...but tastes much better! Crazy weather right? We are hovering around 40 degrees here...last time this year we were around-10 here.... It's crazy!! Yes, the cider for sure curbs my appetite
Any type of apple or can they be a mix. Have apple trees not to sure about the type. Gonna give it a try. We have your single digits here in northwestern N.J. -- numbers thru the nite.
Yes, any type is fine. Yes you should try it! Much better than store bought!...not as tart. Wow, NJ is cold...we are warm here...probably 35 degrees F today... Very unusual weather for January here
@Alaskan6pack finally made it into the teens today. I'll be trying the acv this year. Stay well... be warm and cozy...thanx for the encouragement...
Good job! It's fun to see it transform from apples to a vinegar.... Stay warm!
Do you put in frig after last 2 months? Thank you for sharing.
Good question. We don't because our outdoor fridge gets too cold. We just leave it inside. You are probably supposed to, but we have had no issues so far just leaving it inside!
Very informative. You look like you were in a post card, such a beautiful back ground. Thanks.
Thank you! My menopause makes me feel like a walking heater, so it was a joy to do that video outside! Lol
Great video . I have made apple cider vinegar a few times now. I think it’s great about your Etsy shop…way to go. 🇨🇦🌷
Thank you!!! I love love cider vinegar! However it does take a while to turn to a good vinegar! ... We consume it faster than we probably should... You can just feel it's good for you though
@ four years ago I made a batch of honey vinegar. Omgoodness it’s so good. I haven’t used it all yet but hoping to make another batch next year if I get extra honey.
Yum!!!
This surprise video was so nice to see. I loved it.
Oh so sweet, thank you. You should try making some!!
Do I need the birch bark funnel? Couldn’t I just pour the liquid back in the jar? Thanks- great demo!
You don't need it. I usually have a plastic funnel I use. I just didn't want to spill anything on camera! Lol Was using what I had. I hope you make some soon, it's so great...tastes much better than the store bought...less " sour"
Sarah you give great instructions. The background was great also 😊
Oh thank you!! Yes, the snow weather balances out my hormones perfectly! Lol
@@Alaskan6pack lol your to funny 😄
Thank you so much now I can make my own 👏👏👏👏 excellent video
Yeah and you should....it's so good for you. It also tastes so much better too. I will never go back to store bought.
@ I’m looking forward to more of these videos from you and sweet Lily. You and your daughter work so well together. She’s precious. I know the rest of the family works hard but I really enjoy watching you both creating and doing the garden. You all inspire so many people. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge
Oh thank you. Yes, she is a gem. Old fashioned, stubborn, and definitely the boss of our family! Lol
Never thought about making vineger. I need to add apples and distilled water to my grocery list. I do make my own vanilla. Thank you for sharing.
Yes, it's super good for you. It curbs my appetite too! Great job! Excited you are going to try it!
Yay for the Etsy store. It’s a great idea!
Thank you!!
We’re in Florida and it snowed in north Florida of 6”. We’ve been seeing weird weather lately. Way too cold for Florida. ❤
Oh my!!! That's weird! I think something doesn't seem right lately about weather everywhere. Thanks for sharing!!!
Great video!! Everything is better homemade, less to no chemicals! I like the way y’all made the table! Never liked how sour apple cider vinegar was, is the homemade version less sour?
Yes it is way less sour, so much better!!!
Thank you for the clear instructions! Nicely done!
Oh thank you very much, I just love vinegar!
Oh wow, thank you so much for posting this how-to video in making apple cider!! I will definitely be making us some soon, just not today, because it is frigidly cold here in New Mexico.
Great job, it's soooo healthy for you!!
Great job... FYI if you are harvesting apples and making pies or sauce or juice you can make vinegar from just peels and cores.
Oh my, I did not know that!! Thank you for sharing... !
Great video
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!
Love it. I don't think Australia has had a 50 degree C day this year. And here in Melbourne, not any 'heat waves' (+ consecutive 35+ degrees) to speak of. We have have nudged 29 where we are. With that said, some rain events enough to keep some of the grass green but the tanks are dry and using mains water to top up the garden
Thank you for sharing! It's just been crazy weather all over!!
I'm live in KY and cold down 14 degrees and falling down to 2 tonight.
Oh my!!! That's chilly for sure. We are at 34 degrees F here in Alaska in January! It's way too warm here ...usually we are in the negatives in Jan ... weird weather! Thanks for sharing!
🥣💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩💩
From Stihl you can buy the kit to change the tensioner from the front to the side.
Oh cool. I didn't know that. Thank you very much for sharing. !
You’re not checking Best before dates. If you live off the grid you have to make sure you check the dates, be a stand if you bought stuff that’s going to go bad quickly
True
Awesome
It's 5 degrees in my part of eastern Tennessee. You guys can have this weather back. Lol
Ha. No! You keep it! Lol. Thanks for sharing
will you put siding on house this summer
Yes, we are hoping for spruce siding this summer
I'm glad to see that everyone survived the wicked wind storm. Things are less crazy here in southern Wisconsin. We hit 51 Friday but now it's barely above zero.
Wow,! That's quite a temperature swing!! Well stay warm and hang in there! Nothing to really measure on the snow stick....it's been a strange winter!
@Alaskan6pack we got to change that, you guys need the snow.
I know. We are already worried about wildfires if we don't get more snow
I wish I had enough money to buy land, can u buy with no money down ??? Buy Alaska too cold for me. What's so good about Alaska??
You can buy land through the state with little money. I have a video on that. You should watch it. It's the video with the bush plane on it. Very helpful with website info. We just feel very free here...lots of space, resources, big game, mountains, everything is extreme. It fits us pretty good. Jeff and I do miss Oregon in the winters though, I won't lie! Thanks for watching!
We’ve had snow in the UK so that was super exciting. My family love the snow. It only lasted about a day. Do you ever get sick of the snowy weather?
Oh yes.... absolutely we get sick of it. However, it comes with its own beauty and quietness. So double edged sword for sure! Thanks for sharing your weather!
👍
Thanks for watching us!
We are getting ready for our first real snowstorm. Supposed to get about 6 inches.
Nice! Well, stay warm and safe ...!
Sunday morning and its 15 below here in west central Wisconsin. Yup, it's chilly and has been windy too.
Oh, my 15 below....brrrrr....that's cold then you tack on wind... Be safe and stay warm....thanks for sharing!

G’day, hope you keep the raw essence of your channel going as you grow because many whom have established channels turn out boring, generic & corporate.
I understand... We call ourselves the "traveling circus" ... but hey, at least we enjoy each other's company. I appreciate you watching us. We don't have the most perfect channel out there but it's just where we are right now in life... it's trying to snow today here. I will take snow over wind any day! Lol
Nice video. Your boys work so well together.
Oh thank you...they " usually " do get along most of the time. Some days are better than others! Lol But overall they are good friends
Be careful out there. Stay loaded up on 🔥fire wood!!!?!👍
I agree!!!
Hi Sarah. It’s been non AC weather here the last few weeks till today and tomorrow. 80 degrees then next week Florida gets really cold. We had campers in NY. We enjoyed camping till I had my accident and my health declined. We want to get back to it with a Class C for my son to drive mostly. Cart us around. Oh, I’d like to for next Christmas get a cutting board for my wife, but put a specific backing on it as to use it as cover for the top of the stove and move it when it’s time to cook. Gotta measure. Tax time coming so I’d like to get it and hide till Chistmas. Thank you. Good night.💤
Sounds good on the board...we would just need measurements to see if we had those dimensions in stock. Sorry to hear about your accident..... Sounds aweful... Well today it's deciding to snow today!! Hey, better than wind! Lol
I live in New Orleans where it is 60 (1/18/25 10:00 pm). We are expecting the temps to drop into the 20's with snow on Tuesday and Wednesday. It will be the first time in 15 years we are expecting snow. The roads will be closed and the entire city will shut down. We don't know how to drive in snow down here!
Oh my....that's crazy. We'll good luck there with that and be safe!! That's quite a temperature plunge!
Wonderful content as always
Oh thank you Ty!!
