Neil Young - Chrome Dreams 2023 Review (And a bit of Ragged Glory Deluxe too)
Fantastic and interesting discussion. Top quality listening.
Much appreciated!
great interview. never a dull moment.
Thanks! We said 30 mins before hand but after Alex said he was happy to keep going as we really got into the weeds and I knew the films he was referencing.
@@DavysFlicks yeah you were on the level
Alex is exactly right, Hollywood is like a cancer to filmmaking around the world. This is why our industry in the UK is in massive recession is because of Hollywood! We should have a thriving film industry like France, but because there is and was so much corruption. I'm glad they mentioned the Film Council, who were an utter disgrace. Love your films Alex and I hope this is not your last movie!
great insight of the early days of this fantastic collaboration
Thank you!
I still want to watch Highway Patrolman - seems unfindable in the UK
On bluray it is - but there's a lovely BFI DVD twofer with that and Three Businessmen that you may have more luck with, it's out of print but you may find it on Amazon, EBay etc. Commentaries on both releases from Alex, and exclusive extras.
Excellent interview -well informed and great responses from Alex. Like so many I too was raised in the Cox film school Moviedrome in the early 90s
Thanks very much, was a pleasure. We only planned 30mins but when movie geeks get going...
So nice to see the channel grow to this point. And I hope he's only the first of many great guests.
Thanks so much - here's hoping!
What a scoop Davy, a really great interview and most enjoyable. Thank you to you both, I’m a fan. Let’s hope it’s not Alex’s last movie. And Davy, have you heard or do you have a copy of ‘’The King of Elflands Daughter’’? As Christopher Lee narrates/sings on the album.
I do, I have all the Lee on disc I can get - even his Chirstmas CD! Thanks very much, Alex was very gracious to come on and we had a great chat before and after. Lovely guy.
@@DavysFlicks I should have known you have it all. I’m also pleased you do.
A brilliant interview, thanks Davy for being your good self and thank you Alex for all the great work over the years.
Our pleasure!
Thanks Davy! Yet another "aural Rorschach" from Neil & NYA (as one reviewer put it). OK, by us. The more confounding, the better when it come to Neil & The Vaults. Danny Whitten’s “Look At All The Things” is another reminder of gone far too soon.
Straight To Hell is essentially Django Kill. Great interview.
Thanks!
I love Alex, his films are a touchstone for my generation.
Exquisite interview. Mr Cox is such a great interviewee and Mr Gallagher is a wonderful interviewer. Two thumbs up from me 👍👍
PLEASE CONSIDER SUBBING. *MONACLE*
This is great - had never come across the channel until this. And the political stuff at the beginning is spot on.
Thanks very much! Welcome!
He recently got a great compliment from Roger Deakins - who looks back more fondly at "Sid & Nancy" than at first. Paul Thomas Anderson's current film in production is said to be "Repo Man" influenced. Deakins said Cox's wild unpredictable approach is what's missing from current films.
Which is true, certainly of Hollywood. Deakins to reflect on such old work for him is paying a hell of a compliment there. Easily the best living cinematographer.
@@DavysFlicks That's great you got in contact with him. Worked with his cast members over my film crew years and always asked about him. Felt connected to his work even when I rented a new release VHS of Repo Man when I was 12.
Would love to see Alex Cox direct a biopic about Eugene Debs. It's long overdue and he's the perfect guy for the job. There's a great story there that few know and it's certainly relevant to the current political climate.
Eugene Debs could sure write, @jadsongaylor2232.
It'd be great. Debs, like many, has been wiped from the history books by those who wouldn't want people reading Howard Zinn.
@@DavysFlicks You're well informed, Davey.
Best of luck on the project Alex. It better not be your last movie.
Ha i bought all 3 on release.
that was amazing - many thanks to both of you.x
Our pleasure!
Good Work, Great Interview.... I had to break away halfway through to play my part in getting rid of the tories... otherwise i would have completed it in one go (which is unusual for me) Cheers
Glad you enjoyed it! And you've more to enjoy later - both on the vid AND when the results come in!!
So many boxes ticked!!! Moviedrome, Joe Strummer, Dostoyevsky, Spaghetti Westerns and the demise of the f**king Tories ✔✔✔✔
A pleasure to do so...especially rejoicing in the departure of the Tories!
@philipbolton7265 hear hear! Dancing my way to the polling station smiling after this opener!
"He was a pair of glasses in that (JFK)" 🤣 thoroughly enjoying hearing you both (interviewer new to me) speak. So happy to hear Lonely are Brave get a mention. One of my favourite Westerns. Thanks for making & sharing!
A pleasure, thanks for watching!
Fantastic interview Davy, for those of us of a certain age Alex via MovieDrome was our gateway to some incredible movies we could only read about and opened up the idea of films being political. Still recall the initial screening of The Big Silence and Face to Face. An absolute legend that I could listen to for hours
Yep, he's impossibly influential. And, FWIW, my family grew up with a picture of James Connolly on the mantlepiece. If there's any better Scots-Irishman (except...me), I don't know of them.
What a fascinating discussion . I started to sample the interview for 5 minutes at first but ended up watching the whole thing in one go. Well done Davy!!!
A pleasure, thanks for staying with us!
Holy shit Davy this was a freaking nice surprise. Absolutely loved this interview 👍 👍
Thanks Si - this was a biggie for me!
@@DavysFlicks Great charm & warmth your a natural interviewer buddy 👍👍👍
This was great. Thank you Davey & Alex
Pleasure my man!
"Repo Man". One of my favorite films of all-time.
"Look at those assholes, ordinary fucking people. I hate 'em."
@@DavysFlicks Yeah. For no apparent reason, Stanton's character is kind of a dick. I was hoping Otto or someone would stand up to him and be like..."why do you have to be such a prick?" Regardless, a funny character and Stanton is great as that dick.
Moviedrome with Alex Cox on BBC2 was a must watch for me. Thank you Alex 👍
www.kickstarter.com/projects/alexcoxfilms/my-last-movie/description
Danny Whitten was amazing
100%. What might have been....
I love the album so much and I love the sound of this 2018 remaster, but it kinda bothers me what they did with the beginnings of The Weight and Lonesome Suzie songs with those countings before the songs begin... Maybe it's just me, but now it sounds like an error that was left behind
Great review, will definitely pick up, I don’t know about over there in the UK but here in Canada Neil’s new releases tend to be overpriced. $32 for a single CD is a bit ridiculous but unfortunately this seems to be a trend. Finally found Fu##in’ Up this week at half the price of Early Daze.
You do the mighty Neil a tremendous service. thanks for letting me know.
Great review Davy. I’ll be buying it after your video. Nicely done!
How you doing buddy 🖒🖒🖒 great video very imformative. Did i tell you i quit the forum i focus on reviewing on Letterboxd now.
Great stuff 🎸 Neil sparring
Nice 👍 job. Davy. Great review. Stay well 👍💯
Thanks for the visit my man!
Everybody knows ... is my favourite NY album. Great review 👍
Good choice! Top 5 for me!
I saw them in 1978 on the rust never sleeps tour, the loudest concert I have ever attended.
The Rust tour...iconic!
Saw them on that tour too. Loved it!

Thanks - there's a playlist of my Neil vids to date. :) There's always so much new coming that covering what's already out....ouch! ua-cam.com/play/PLOYXliJ7DxxgbxyOiNhJhmT98L90eksDK.html
Did you get the Bruceploitation box?
I did indeed! And the new book on the subject from Ricky Baker!
@DavysFlicks how about battles without honour and humanity?
My very first BJH record was ...And Other Short Stories. I bought it in about 1975 and I found it in the cutout racks. Fell in love immediately but the problem was, the rest of their catalog (until Octoberon) was only available as import. So I asked the store to order me BJH Live, figuring it would wrap the best of early BJH. I couldn't be more right! What a beautiful record. And the mellotron that Wolly plays really adds to the beauty of it. There's something about that instrument (I first encountered it with King Crimson) that touches something in my musical DNA. Nice review of two essential records!
Brilliant post, thanks!
A wonderful album, but I wish all the tracks were on there in audio form!
Hello! Just wanna say - SUBSCRIBED!
A belated thank you!
As a fan of the anthology series Inside No. 9, my second favourite episode of that show is "Mr. King", and when I gushed about how much I loved it on the Inside No. 9 Reddit upon a rewatch, one of the Redditors actually recommended me The Blood on Satan's Claw citing it as another influence on the story (the other, more obvious one being The Wicker Man). In fact, Mark Gatiss and Reece Shearsmith even once did a commentary for it on an earlier release, and the former even starred in an Audible dramatization of it. So you know that when I buy The Wicker Man, I'll also buy Blood on Satan's Claw.
Yes, I mentioned the commentary on the vid as sadly not being ported over as it's terrific. The League also did one for Theatre Of Blood with Vincent Price for Arrow. MASSIVE fan of Inside No. 9 - my fave would be The 12 Days Of Christine.
@@DavysFlicks If you're wondering what my primary favourite is, it's easily "The Riddle of the Sphinx". One of the most gripping stories I've ever seen committed to anthology TV.
