Many conservative marriage books treat the marital relationship differently than any other relationship. They make it about wooden roles, and often make things way more complicated than necessary. Like if we treated normal friendships that way we wouldn’t have friends.

Being male doesn't mean you are competent at anything. Learning is a path. Competence is the goal Competence is riding the wave. When you fall off, if you don't get back up, then you haven't gotten back up. Knowing the path is different than following the path. The Path to Manhood. Follow the Path! OR? Oblivion - Nothing - Worthless

Amen sister! I think teaching discernment (seeking the will of a God in our lives) and prayer (conversing with God and an openness to the Holy Sprit) to our children is a foundational step. Preach the original definition of marriage again; a sacred covenant between a man, woman and God. Then, if a person discerns marriage as their vocation, they understand its design and purpose and will choose a person that is right for them and that goal.

Parents teach their kids how to have loving relationships and should be showing their kids how to love as Christ did. That is what it means to be Christian.

A marriage preparation course was mandatory at my church. I say to people I know how when we were first told to take it, I was offended... but I am.so happy we did it. I highly recommend taking a marriage prep course before getting married. People think about the wedding as a party they are prepping for... but rarely do people get themselves ready for the trials of the future of sharing your life with someone. As Catholics, one perspective is that we are trying to make our spouse a saint. With that in mind, we support each other in our spiritual lives and it pours out into the rest of our life.

Two people willing to take responsibility for their part in the marriage can see transformation in marriage counseling. Going to counseling to change your spouse never works. It requires both parties to realize they have blind spots and need to deal with them for the sake of the marriage and children if applicable.

“We don’t get the training we need to be married “… In theory we should’ve been getting the training since we were young children. In theory, your parents raised you to show you what a loving relationship looks like. Obviously we don’t get that anymore. …. it’s gonna take a while to fix this.

I don’t agree that you need to abandon this collective wisdom that was successful in raising you and giving you the value system that you have because you’re being married. I think that you can honor your husband and still be able to ask your parents who are your rock for so many years what their opinions are- what’s wrong with that? Now you should not be telling your parents intimate details about your spouse and the final decision should be made by the husband and wife, but asking for help or asking for a good opinion from someone who’s not emotionally involved is not a bad thing, especially if they’re Christians. Marriage can be a little nerve-racking, but it’s something you choose. Nobody forces you to do it and I think that distinction is important. The couple that being interviewed sound like they had a solid family and they vetted their choices so they should trust the process, especially if they both born again Christians.

"Speaking life over each other." This is so valuable! I am grateful for my spouse because right now he is working hard on our bathroom sink plumbing after having come home from Saturday overtime work, a very long week! He maintains the home and vehicles, fixing things that I do not know how or giving me instructions to do so when he cannot be present. He is amazing in numerous ways!

I am one of the millions of men in the US divorced and disposed of by our wives for elective reasons. Boredom is a major cause. Also women are even planning to divorce us now. The suicide rate is very high for our group yet no one wants to talk about us. Because of the Internet, men are onto women now and marriage rates and birth rates have fallen off a cliff. Women don't even care that they are destroying men so we are not going to participate in this cruel charade any longer.

If you aren’t a Christian, you may not understand this worldview. But what you just said is the opposite of the Christian worldview. We esteem the leadership of our husbands because God designed them to be our spiritual leaders. We submit to them as unto the Lord and they are commanded to love their wives and lay their lives down for us as Christ laid His life down.

Appreciate Focus on the Family, but I'm definitely not feeling this guy. If this is what marriage is you can keep it. He is just making jokes about his being whipped. A few funny points, but self deprecation eventually breeds resentment. I suspect women like his presentation much more than men do.
