Retired Speed Skater
Olympic Medalist, World Champion, World Record Holder
I've spent the last 32 years of my life skating. From 1992 when I put my first pair of skates on until 2022 when I raced my final race, I competed in 3 Olympics, won 31 World Titles, earned an Olympic bronze with my teammates in the pursuit, broke some world records, and traveled the world doing what I loved
Now the dream is to skate every major city in the world and share the experience with you. If I get to teach a few things I've learned along the way, that's icing on the cake

6 Skating Drills You Didn't Know You Needed | Edge Control + Double Push
This episode of Skate Tips dives into Edge Control. I introduce 6 drills that are excellent for taking your skating to the next level.
CORRECTION: "ouside edge" was supposed to be "outside edge", a mistake that will live on the internet forever now :)
0:00 Introduction
0:53 2 Foot Edge Flip (2 sets of 10 reps)
1:49 Single Foot Edge Flip (2 sets of 6 reps)
3:07 Edge Flip Hold (2 sets of 4 reps)
4:50 Double Double (3 sets of 10 reps)
6:38 Single Double w/ Training Wheels (2 sets of 10 reps)
9:41 Single Double (2 sets of 8 reps)
13:00 Urban Slow Motion Examples
The first 3 drills can be done on inline or ice skates and should be incorporated into your warm-up every time you skate. They're meant to strengthen the ankle support specifically by growing the muscles in the foot and lower leg and are great for teaching you how to control your skates better and can be very effective for helping you overcome a loose or floppy boot.
The last 3 drills are Double Push exercises that really only work on wheels because of the aggressive nature of how you whip the skate doesn't work so well with a blade that's in the surface vs wheels that are on top of the surface, not to mention you can't really have a training wheel down on the ice. These incorporate more of your entire body, forcing you get stronger in key areas that important for good efficient skating and should be done no more than 3 times per week, ideally you do them twice weekly

We skated from 96th to Queens to watch fireworks the first night and the next day we cruised to the Lower East Side skate park, but it started raining so we didn't get to skate it. Started from my buddy's place on 96th and cruised to Central Park. The humidity was 1000%. It felt like I was skating around in a sauna, but the lap was fun. I started talking about my 3 favorite supplements, here they are if you're interested: Beta Alanine - Makes your muscles burn less (2-3 month loading phase) Choline - Essential nutrient for increased cognitive function (works same day) Ash...

Simple Tip For Better Skate Control | Joey Mantia Coin Trick
Переглядів 7 тис.Місяць тому
The main thing is that you feel the coin(s) on the bottom of each foot so you have little pressure points where you can focus your balance and pushes through. It may take a few coins stacked up to get to that point. Of course you can use whatever object you want, Ive always just used one or two coins. This skating tip has worked really well for me over the years so I wanted to share it. It shou...

Thank you tant was intense. I am doing boxing and I feel like these exercises are good for me.
Weird and kind of gross. Feels like a self esteem issue for a world class skater to post like this.
Edges are 🔑. Thank you so much for your valuable lessons!
Bullying cyclist
I've been skating a long time and i still don't understand if i'm doing something wrong ?
Amazing dude 😎
😂😂😂😂🫡👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Sei bravissimo Grazie 👏👏👏👏👏🛼🛼👏👏👏🫡🫡🫡
cool 😂🎉😂🎉
How do we find these places and events!?
Hi Joey, when i cross over to the right, the right supporting leg does not want to hold my weight in that microsecond when all of my weight is on one (right ) foot before the crossed left foot touches the ground again. Are there any exercises for that? I can't do one foot yet (it is for middle aged urban person). Thank you!
How do you go so fast? I can barely go over 27kmh
Me & my son following your videos. HE has to learn this. it could be help to him in future😂 (VIZAG) 🇮🇳
Camera man’s are insane
Very interesting and professional tutorial!
Why did bro try to take you out 😭
Looks like he recently learned to power slide
Interesting way you use to slow down
He does not want to wear his wheels down so fast
plow stop or something like that.
@@SwiftbladesMike that's a good point. the t stop can wear down your wheels much faster
Excelent vídeo Joey!! Thanks...from🇧🇷
Wait isn't that the school from The amazing world of gumball?
Tried the two edge flip, my best effort, tonight and it made my legs scream pretty quickly. Love it! Thank you Joey for sharing!
Thank you so much for sharing such a great information. I use an urban skate with 4x100, and have been trying to follow your teaching where applicable. Really help me to learn and enjoy skating better 🙏. Cheers from Singapore
Top quality content. Love it. 👌
Tttooopppppp !!!
Thank you #JoeyMantia
😅😅 it's not easy😅😅I'm a first timer user of roller blade😅I need more time to practice and practice to get it perfect😅
In the correct clip, the wheels are compressed down to the ground by the body weight riding on them all the way, but in the wrong clip, they are not.
Ohne fleiß kein Preis 🥳
*Timing of underpush~ 1) Wrong clip~ underpush with weight-transfer 2) Correct clip~ underpush after weight-transfer
6 drills? I count 3 🤔
This is the kind of content I wish we could see at the Olympics and Worlds. All the spandex covers it up, though, so no bueno. It is literally poetry in motion. I have always admired the speed skating in the Olympics, especially ever since Eric Heiden (and then his foray into pro cycling). Yeah I am old. Such a beautiful sport.
Love the music you have on your shorts, your skating skills are amazing 🔥👌🏾
Thank you for such good filming. I finished learning one foot carve downhill today, all thanks to copying your arm technique and overall aggressive position. That's all that was really missing, muscles were already strong. Time to make it happen on flat ground!
Thanks for the tips! I've been trying to do the one foot slalom, however I struggle accelerating on the outside edge of the skate. I'll be practicing it nonetheless.
One of the most interresting, teaching and beautiful video, as always... You are a gem!
Km/h?
👍👍👍
Thanks for those drill reminders! Gr8 SpeedSk8 spot! West Side highway NYC
I’ve tried these drills today… I couldn’t even imagine how hard they actually are. Afterwards I tried the double push.. my AVG.speed went from 25km/h to 30km/h… I will do these drills everyday as long as I skate. Really appreciated for providing these golden tips.
Thank you for your efforts in sharing the techniques sir . We are really grateful for learning from THE BEST SKATER. As a successful speed skater I could have never come this far without your guidance and tips
I am your big fan sir.. Thank you so much..for this tutorial..form india..

Excellent video ! About the mistake that will live forever, it doesn't have to : now UA-cam allows channels that are monetized to update their videos. If you're wondering if you should monetize your channel, either way YT will put the same amount of advertisement. At least if you monetize you get a small portion back and you get access to better tools
Cool content :)) Dare I say, if you mind me asking. What rig are you running in? Look like: Powerslide 'HC EVO' Pro's with Endless 80 or 90 Frame's? Not sure what wheels, bearings etc. You have. Are you comfortable sharing your setup or making a video about them :)? Why you did that, how it feels, what you think you may do differently, or what you're interesting in trying out next? Cheers, keep it up!~!!
Love it! 😀
As always, love your video, but im not going to lie, as a beginner this video kinda scares me shitless, i still struggle with basic balance and control sometimes, and some of these exercises seem to defy gravity 😅
Really good and instructive video, thanks!🤩
difference in pressure on the skate, is this true?
thanks for any and all tips! seem to be stuck at a beginner level, so I'll give these drills a go!
Verygood Joey, those are some of the heaviest exercises on the legs. I also practice those moves, but my knees and especially left underleg don't like them so much due to fysical wear and tear, but with 57yrs I don't complain💪
You wanted us to write why we didn't like this video. I didn't like this video because I'm sure that I won't ever be able to skate even 30% as good as you. I'm too old, too lazy and too weak.... Other from that the video is awesome and drills here are priceless. ❤
