Live 5/1/1980 Edward Van Halen solo (Soundboard/Enhanced Remaster) Capital Centre Landover, MD

The only soundboard recording from the 1980 Women and Children First Tour. Listen to Edward play new ideas like the intro to "Mean Street" (1981), early bits of "Cathedral" (1982) and bits of what he used for the intro to "Blood and Fire" from A Different Kind of Truth (2012).

Great quality for an audience recording. Live from the 1984 tour in Detroit, MI at Cobo Arena. Ed started his solo spot real mellow and bluesy for this tour. @VanHalen

10/6/1979 (San Diego, CA) - Listen to soundboard audio of 24-yo Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth. On the Van Halen II tour they would riff on what would become the intro for "Fools" on the next record. Ed puts a beating on that guitar :-) (photos: Mike Romano & Colleen Bracken 🙏)

David Lee Roth talks about Eddie Van Halen's original striped guitar
Переглядів 4483 роки тому
DLR's details about the guitar stripes might be a tad exaggerated and conflating different iterations of Frankie when he talked about it recently (Dec. 2021), but here he is in 2006 with a similar story. I wouldn't doubt the initial *idea* for the stripes came from DLR's mouth. He was the main driver of their image from 1974-1984. And as he admits here, they likely "borrowed" the stripe idea fr...

"On Fire" was the opening song on the Fair Warning tour. This night it seems Michael Anthony may have had technical issue w his bass and just a few seconds in Eddie and Alex start an extended jam for about 2 minutes until Mike rejoins and they launch back into the song. The Mighty Van Halen at the peak of powers, 1981.

July 30, 1982 - a couple weeks into the tour for Diver Down, Eddie talks to Jas Obrecht for Guitar Player Magazine. Ed talks about the new album and defends all the cover songs ... "They're good fuckin' songs, why shouldn't they be redone the way we do 'em for a new generation of people" ... "I don't think any cover tune we've ever done sounds like the original. It takes almost as much time to ...

I don't know mannnnnnn... $9 bucks... That's kinda steep- Are they any good?
Sitting on top of the world CREAM Ed's tone is stellar in this one. Crisp and Woody with his classic sound all mixed together. I think my brother went to this show. He went to the invasion tour in 80. 🪄✨
0:06 In and around the same time as wooderson 🤔 "Alright alright alright"...
It's hard to comprehend how good these guys were
Should have left the riff alone. Def one or the weaker VH songs. Kinda a poundcake clone too.
I had a bunch of pictures from this show. Lost them years ago. Epic to hear this
Wow! Cool! I thought the thumbnail / title had a type-o. Or the poster was on drugs. LOL And of course... I had to click it and find out. Man. So cool ! Edward was always fiddling with riffs. He must have had a thousand killer riffs... and song starters. I hope a lot of it starts leaking out to us. I'd kill for one more record.. if Al and Wolf could give that one gift to us.
Songs like Summer Nights, Good Enough, parts of Top of the World, Right Now, some of A.F.U riffs, Amsterdam just to mention a few...those songs were written long before Sammy joined Van Halen.
That’s a bit of a reach.
I was there on the 10th
Interesting, the intro to mean street is in this solo this is before fair warning came out.
I was there. Lots of skunk weed!
I saw them in Lakeland Florida at I think the 3rd show of this tour in January 1984. I was 20 feet in front of Eddies microphone where Ed was for a lot of the show unless he was running around & it was the greatest concert of my life & I saw everyone back in the 80's. I'm sure his solo was a lot like this.
Ive heard this song a 100 times. Worst version. Be honest. VH was shit LIVE
Your out of your mind .They were a great live band.
Dave really was the best frontman. Eddie and him fed off each other even with their relationship
I was fortunate enough to see VH 8 times in a row starting in 80' all shows in St.Louis and all shows ROCKED!!!
Got damn, man. Thank you so much for uploading this. This is the first time hearing a song from a VH show I attended. My second time seeing The Mighty Van Halen. My first was the 1979 VHII tour, in San Antonio as well. My all-time favorite (DLR era only) band.
44 years to the day🔥
Pretty sad that the fan channels care more about VH than anything official.
What does that mean
You sure did get a lot for $9.00 back in 1980!
“It chopped his finger off” “uh huh”

i was at this show it was amazing!!
wow!! 💥
As a Montrealer, a real blast from the past!
i was there arms on the stage fell in love with Eddie
Thanks to who put this clip on
He was on fire that night in Detroit!!
I was at this very show. A junior in high school at the time and I still have the ticket stub and the shirt. RIP EVH 🙏
Llc
Like or not , he was different . Rip King
Ed we love you and miss you dearly. Thank you for contributing to the soundtrack of our lives. Rest In Rock-n-Roll Meastro🎶🤘👍🎸
Me too buddy
That Mean Street lick 🤘
Grew up near dtroiit as a kid wanted SOO BAD to go to this show, I was like 15 at the time.....would've blown my mind to be there
I saw this same tour on May 27th that year. This solo has some cool elements I hadn’t heard before. He was truly a genius!
Lucky you. I would have but, I wasn't born until January of 1985. My dad seen Crosby Stills Nash at a Dog Track in Winter Springs Florida and Foghat in 1977 in Tampa. The only show I seen with my Dad was Ted Nugent opening for ZZ Top at the Orlando Arena 2003.
oh in Germany? I've seen a few fan photos from that show
Actually, I stand corrected. I saw them on 3/27 in Pocatello, Idaho. I had to double-check my date when you said Germany. My apologies!
Is amazing🤟🔥✌️
The GOAT
have you ever poo'd yourself
No
Oh man, I'd love to watch the Avatar of this show. Anyone have the link?
Incredible talent
It's a shame we havent a good footage of the era 77/84. Only pro shot of WB or MTV .
I like hearing these older solos before '86 LWAN tour. Theres different bits he throws in before he settled into that standard solo we all love.
His live solo segments felt a lot more spontaneous and fiery before LWAN - not that I dislike the LWAN solo, though, it's a classic!
@@jordanrussell-howard9491 agree... he LWAN is still amazing and of course we have the pro video release, but they did become a bit the same going forward
Interesting ,,,,Here he does the Meanstreet intro live a YEAR before it was recorded on Fair Warning….And at one moment he is even playing what sounds like the intro to Blood and Fire on ADKOT 2012 ….He’s using the technique with the volume knob on Cathedral but not yet the MELODY of it.
@@walterevans2118 This is a common occurrence with Ed's playing. To give an example, on the famous 'Live Without a Net' concert, he begins his solo segment with '316', which is a track that wouldn't be released until five years later on the 'For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge' album. He also incorporated bits of 'Spanish Fly' into his live solo segment, long before 'Van Halen II' was released. I find these instances really cool because it gives us an insight into the sorts of ideas Ed was playing around with at various stages in his career, which would later be heard on the records. Very cool stuff for us VH nerds!
@@jordanrussell-howard9491 Yes I remember hearing bootlegs with the Spanish Fly 2 handed parts way before VH2 myself actually.....316 Ed went on to dedicate to his Son. Actually, in For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge in the track Judgement Day (in 1991) Ed comes over the top of the neck & plays on it with BOTH hands like a piano, but he was doing something similar to this way back on the 1984 tour with a tray Table device for his guitar which he patented. On the 1984 tour you can also hear footage of Ed playing 'Mine All Mine' sections on the synth....& there has been footage discovered of Ed working on the riff for AMSTERDAM (1995) but TEN years earlier in 1985 in the 5150 studio..
Hopefully the footage will surface one day, you can even see a camera at the bottom of the picture
probably not gonna happen
The Emperor ❤💣🎸🤘
5:02 this Melody he keeps using is beautiful, very cool seems he'd go on to write Cathedral with that Volume swell piece, a True Wizard.
The King!
Just amazing 👍👍👍👍👍
Omg I was there ..my first concert when I moved to Memphis Just graduated high school
Saw them in baton rouge louisiana great concert
I was at this show had seats in Tier C. Thanks for this!!
Sounds like he's trying to defend Van Halen while not really liking the album. It was a good album.
Anyone know what his amp rig was during the 84 tour? I know he was still using his Marshalls but was he still cascading them and did he still use a variac on that tour?
