Eddie talks about their 'next' album after 1984 - and you can feel the tension btw him and David Lee Roth here. Several parts where it's clear Dave was likely out of the band here. At one point it's almost as if Valerie is egging Ed on when she repeats the question.... "So Ed she asked what about the next record...."
Eddie was like this his whole life. Humble, down to earth and kind of innocent. A Titan...
She was smitten with him here. We'll miss you Eddie, the whole world. 1955-2020.
@mike derocco Don't BE an asshole! I don't NEED IT!
Was he smitten with her?
Valarie was cheating on him at this time according to her own book
He seems so polite in this interview
He said, "Pardon me"? instead of "What"? Nice manners.
I LOVE EDDIE VAN HALEN!
Love Eddie Van Halen, but it's tragic that his dad taught him to deal with nerves by drinking and smoking when he was just a kid. It led to an early death. RIP Ed! 😢
NOT!! ....it WAS the alcohol/nicotine/coke mix that fueled that poor little Dutch boy to become a guitar god.....Close your eyes after this interview, and imagine THAT guy playing on VH1..unreal....just un-fucking-real....
@@imtheonevanhalen1557 He was already a guitar god before he started using coke.
I remember reading AFTER he was in his final years that if he could do it all again he'd be a pianist and never take a sip of beer or smoke his first cigarette.
He seemed so humble back then
I’ve always loved his humility in interviews. Like when he was inducted into the Smithsonian
Eddie hated doing interviews, but seemed so much more at ease with Valerie by his side💘
No he seems irritated by her.
Am I the only one who thinks he looks like a teenager here.so damn young and cute
Reminds me of michael j fox alittle
When I was running with the devil I asked the red horn what he thought of Eddie. he said, and I quote "Edward Van Halen is one of God's Crowning Achievements! 🤘 "
If ANYONE “STOLE MY CRUSH’, let it be “Ed” (I forgive you Ed!!!!)😉
Eddie looks like such a young boy here! With the short haircut, twirling the guitar's whammy bar! Seems down to earth, no ego, not your typical stuck up rock star. So Refreshing. Always smoking those damn cigarettes tho... Miss you Eddie...💖🎶🎸
Unfortunately! Smoking, drinking and using heavy drugs 24 hours a day. The main cause for his
early death!😭💔
And yes I know the Van Halen brothers are originally from Holland. Which in a sense makes their story even more American. Immigrants from a far away land coming to the country where dreams are made through hard work. That in itself is very American.
Especially when he mentioned Ted Teppleman ( the band's then producer ) had left! Wow. Thanks for posting! Amazing how young they are here. Boy, miss those 80's.
David McCain ted left with dave, so at this point dave was gone, many left the vh camp with dave as well
Eddie always had great hair I dig this haircut right here.
He was very handsome especially with this haircut. Wonderful person
Incredible guitarist and great guy would love to meet eddie.
"After 3 beers and a couple songs my voice would give out, and that's why we got Dave." Lol!
And Scammy Hagar said there wasn't much in the 5150 tape vault . What Edward was referring to was he and Donn made mixes of every instrument Ed played for what now known as about 2 albums worth of songs . Scammy said there wasn't much anything in Eddie's tape vault .
Drinking that beer as much as he can between words
Wow how young they were💘💘💘💘🎸🎸🎸🎸
You can tell that this is during a time where he is uncertain of where his career is going to move next. Subconsciously giving them the album name away 5150, little did he know that this will be the best career move of his life!
Ed has on a "Gator Football" shirt. Several pics in this era he's wearing it. It's for Captain Shreve Highschool in Shreveport, LA. Valerie's brothers attended that school while her dad was working at the S-10 GM plant for several years. Ed and Val met in Shreveport backstage during 1980 tour. A girl that rode my school bus lived next door to Ed's in-laws. Could you imagine seeing Ed next door? Haha!
This proves that Ed had every intention of making a record with DLR. But the video's from Dave's record had movie types sniffing around. Dave's head got even bigger than it already was and quit Van Halen. The rest is history.
Fred Garvin exactly, dave got super big as did his ego, thought he was to good for vh, and i love dave, im pissed that he did split and ruin the best band ever next to zep
Thank you, Fred. Well said!!!!
He quit Van Halen and never expected them to find another singer and keep going under the same name. He thought they would break up like The Beatles or something. That angered him. Then, they gave interviews saying they liked it better without him and that REALLY angered him. I kind of agree that the band name should have changed. They could have named it The Van Halen Project or something. Just make it different. But, if you leave the band, you don’t get to tell people what to do.
Dave's head got bigger? Yeah Dave was the one that built 5150 on Howdy Doody Mountain!
@@goodquestion1105 David L.Roth was and is a very smart guy. He a on business man! 5150 was the greatest creation! See Dave nowadays , still working in many different things, besides his old age. And singing, and dancing, and making marcial arts, traveling around the world, making tattoos pm nos body, working on You Tube Channel, giving interwies and etc....
I love David, he was the head and the heart of the VH band! That was the main reason he left the band. He wanted and he knows how to fly high. He has eagle'eyes even being for long years a very addictive guy! Alcohol, cigars and drugs! But D.L.R is the real and pure Diamond!
He's so cute!
Always defensive of his vulnerability. He should have been everyone wanted a piece of him. Rip dear
Eddie was such a cutie, to die 4
You could sense the cracks in the foundation when the Van Halen questions came and especially when she asked about a new record. You could see Ted was an issue also. Basically it's split down the middle with Ted following Dave and Don following the brothers.
"That's why we got Dave, basically."
Anybody else thinkin' Marty McFly?
Very telling interview!
Valerie is the all time best rock-n-roll wife. A seeming groupie of Ed/VH and best mom for how Wolfie turned out (with best R&R dad, ever=Ed). The antidote wife to a Yoko Ono.
Love Eddie and Valerie xoxo We Miss and Love you Mr Edward Van Halen
EVH was born in January of 1955, so he is 30 years old in this interview.
who cares what when n who this guy is still rocking and hes fucking talented ! everyones path is there own
They were so cute and adorable just a shame they had to break up because it look like brother and sister
30 years young here
I know mind reading is not a thing, but when he confirms Daves record 'is really doing good' it looked like his head was gonna explode with pain and rage.
A very interesting interview. There's a DLR interview with David Letterman shortly after the release of Crazy from the Heat Jan 1 1985 where DLR was quick with his response that the band was not breaking up. You can definitely see in this interview with Martha Quinn that Eddie wanted to avoid questions regarding Dave "get me out of here".
totally. Ed is so nervous the whole time. And Ed is quick to snap back ... "Are you asking if Van Halen is breaking up ? ...Well I'm not going anywhere ..."
no bozos i want that t shirt.
Well Dave was lying. Ted Templeman said Dave had planned to quit Van Halen before 1984 came out. Sammy Hagar said in a 2014 interview that Ted Templeman told him that Dave was going to quit VH too back in 84 when he was recording VOA.
Lol 2:45 "it is hot as shit" eddie
at this point....dave was out but not announced yet. Ed was in NY for this and Letterman and at that time wanted Patti from Scandal to sing. Interesting times.
Eddie wasn't on Letterman till several months later.
Always weird to see Eddie with short hair lol.
I am a 58year old female. Valerie always tried to over power him in interviews. Eddie just kicks ass in a rock and roll band. btw, their son has been the bass player for the band that has been together for over 40 years. Go Wolfiie and your father. Valerie, apparently all of you have a great family relationship but get over yourself.
Like you know anything about this family. You act like you're an "insider," like you have 1% of the talent or creativity that either Eddie or Valerie have. Have you ever been subjected to an interview like? Do you know what their lives were like? Yup, didn't think so. Get over yourself. Believe me, Valerie B does not give a shit what some 58-year old loser like you thinks about her.
@@joshfierro5695 Exactly
@@joshfierro5695 And Eddie still loved Valerie.
@@jacsig you apparently know it all about Eddie and Val why dont you write a book 😂
@@barbarawininger2567 I just go by what I read.
Eddie was the jam master extraordinaire. David Lee Roth was out of his mind to think that he could pull "RIFFS" out of a hat. Eddie WAS Van Halen. Similar to Ronnie Van Zant and lynyrd skynyrd. Some of Roth's music was decent as well as Sammie Hagers. But neither is worthy of hall of fame induction. If you think about it. Eddie had two bands (Van Roth and Van Hager) that each independently were worthy of hall of fame. WOW! YUP, that's how brilliant he was.
Valerie is such a Mom to Eddie.. Ha ha..
She loves him so much! But his demons (alcohol and drugs) definitely killed their relation..that’s so sad!! 🥺
@@marivettef She loved him but did he love her?
@@marivettef And what's even more sad is that he stayed sober with another woman, so I guess he didn't really love Valerie enough.
@@jacsig musicians in his league have relationships, but their first and only love is music-its how they are wired
@@BA-ef4pr That's what Valerie Bertinelli said in her book.
yeah I love watching this trying to figure out the timeline. Even tho EVH seems pretty cool about Dave's solo EP...there are several parts and especially twds the end where it seems Dave may already be out of the band here. Obviously very close since think it was officially announced just a few weeks after this interview.
Jan 28, 1985 - Crazy from the Heat released
??? ??, 1985 - This interview (Feb/Mar?)
Apr 01,1985 - VH announce split
Dave also had a multi-million dollar movie package with CBS in the works (an "Elvis deal") that totally fell apart after he bolted.
It fell apart because of change of CEOs , I thought . CBS was losing money
If you want to know who ultimately caused the break up of the original Van Halen, it's sat to the left of Eddie..... V-A-L-E-R-I-E
Once Eddie Van Halen got married the tension's within the band got bigger. Valerie Bertinelli slowly began to have more and more of an influence on Eddie and his decision making. Roth was the definite leader in this band and I reckon she persuaded Eddie to have more of a say in the direction of the band. He definitely started writing a lot more ballads and more radio friendly music.
Roth wanted the band to still be wild and crazy on the road and by 1984 all the other members of the group were married as well.
cooky monster valerie ono
cooky monster stuck her face where it did not belong
Yes, and Eddie told many times doing interviews that Valerie, his ex wife introduced Cocaine to him. He was addicted by his wife. Poor Eddie!
@@veraregina4525 What interviews? Eddie was already doing coke before Valerie came on the scene. With DLR.
Cooky monster VB said in her book that Eddie's feelings got hurt when DLR would not be a groomsman at their wedding and that Eddie never got over it.
She seems intrusive during the interview. He looks uncomfortable with the things she’s interjecting.
Musicians are up at strange hours working. Could not have been easy
I would get tired of being woken up every single day at 4 am too.Once in awhile it would be okay.
Wow
let's see, i'll marry the most innovative guitarist in rock and roll history but i don't wanna hear any music at 4am.
Everyone's got their limits I guess.
@@whipchick90 Yes they do. That would get old day after day after day.
@Lester Green No it's not worthless. The 1984 tour ended in 9/84 and this interview was done in 2/85 so in effect Eddie hadn't worked for 5 months at the time of the IV. Valerie however, was making a boatload of money off of the TV movies she was making, so she was in effect subsidizing Eddie's cocaine habit. She had every right as the breadwinner at the time to ask Eddie to take his synthesizer from the hallway into the studio and use it while he was high at 4am and she had to get up at 6 to go to work for the benefit of both of them.
"Liquid courage"
To paraphrase a DLR comment: Van Halen is like McDonalds golden arches, the hollywood sign or the statue of liberty. Uniquely and immediately recognizable as American.

I can't count how many times I've heard, turn it down, dam musicians so noisey but somebody's got to make the doughnuts.
Everytime Val corrects Ed or tells him how to act during interview, he seems very uncomfortable and either slugs a beer or lights up a smoke. Val she even be a part of the interview. She makes him very nervous.
Yeah I wonder why he married her. It doesn't appear to me that he ever really loved her.
Oh man, April 1st was the day they announced it? I would LOVE to find some old magazine articles or editorials or w/e that had people wondering if it was a joke lol.
Things that make you go, " hmmmmmnnnnn??????? "
"It's hot as shit" lmao
If val wasnt around..eddie be talkin diffrent bout daimond dave..
Always drinking..Valerie outta stop answering questions for Eddie regarding his music decisions and music career? She's interfering with his head and he's faking and hiding his real feeling through the drink!!
pretty good Dr. Spencer!
No problem anytime, thank you!
I just watched an interview with Eddie by Kurt Loder in 1991. In it Eddie said that when he was a kid his parents used to lock him and Alex in the closet. That explains alot about Eddie's behavior.
We were all young once. looks like he could be my kid now. lol He is actually a year older than me i think.
Ted producing Dave's record and Dave making a little bit of cash for himself....seemed to really irk Alex and Eddie.
Right after that did you notice he took a big swig of beer?
So
Poor Eddie! He was so addictive: alcohol, cigarettes and drugs!
lol eddie at 2:45
Martha Quinn?
Michael J. fox part deux - Electric Boogaloo!
He hated too agree with the reporter that David was doing great with his solo career lol
Interesting body language from Valerie here. Her fist to her chin is blocking Eddie and is on the defensive. Maybe they argued earlier ? The open hand to the chin indicates boredom. She may have been answering his questions for him bcuz she wanted to hurry up and get the hell out of there.
Ed looks pretty wired here and gulping beer to mask his nervousness, he's grown up since then
Back then we all knew he liked the name Mammoth. What he didn’t know was that him & Val would have a son named Wolfgang and he would name is band that!! RIP EVH you are so missed
His voice is Very different .
ted robbed them blind
Oh yeah . And Warner Bros president . Their own manager . They're first contract was a ripoff . The money Warner Bros gave them was a high interest loan . And they had to do a new album EVERY YEAR . That explains why their first 5 albums were just over a half hour long .
Oh my God. I was thinking the same exact thing.
when ed talks about dave ,,,,,dave roth was what any head doctor could see. full pathology narcassistic and low traite sociopathy. VH was only a ladder to fame and forune to dave nothing more. that is why all the fights all the time dave had to constantly resteer the ship in the direction he wanted. when you run ashore allot you need to get out of the boat and free the vessle.
why do you think roth only sang songs from old VH.....besides the fact dave couldnt hit sammies notes....
I read an interview with Sammy Hagar the other day and in the IV he said back when he was working on VOA with Ted Templeman, Ted told him that Dave was quitting Van Halen, and that had been in the works for quite sometime, and that it was a PLANNED exit by Dave becuz, Sammy said, according to Ted Dave wanted to start his own band. But Dave hadn't left yet becuz apparently he was interviewing guitarists. Sammy said that Ted said the reason he was telling him that is becuz he knew the VH brothers would call him to join the band cuz they had wanted him before and that they would keep it quiet until it was official. And Sammy said that is exactly what happened - Eddie called him but they kept it quiet. And that Dave left Van Halen high and dry.
Eddie is on the spectrum no doubt about it.
They were incompatible. She was very mature.
This was more like 87-88. They cut their hair and Alex shaved his head after 5150 tour from 86
This is February 1985. Dave had not left the band yet.
i thought dave would be here
Dave's not here man
Val Ono.
Wow. He use to have a normal regular voice before it was burnt out by drugs, alcohol, and smoking. Scary. Highly unlikely that he was not violent though, huh?
not to mention tongue cancer.. so he's talking w half a tongue these days ;)
Hard to believe he's still alive!
@@TheMightyVanHalen yes, that's true. Well said! Poor Eddie!
Pumped up on a little Coke I'm sure
So what?
eddie looks pretty gacked
A lot of people don't want to hear this but this is not Eddie Van Halen this is a doppelgänger .Eddie Van Halen has been replaced about four or five times by different guys they do this all the time in the music industry this guy isn't even close to the real Eddie Van Halen
i agree
Pfttttt I was a huge Van Halen fan back in the day and Eddie especially. This IS Eddie..
No it is really Eddie. You can tell by his teeth when he smiles. No doppelganger would have that same unique and adorable overbite.
She seemed like she was very patronizing
yeah the part about Ted was sad to me..but not shocking. Ted was like the 5th member of VH basically producing/recording the 6 classic records. '81 Fair Warning is when things started to sour btw Ed and Ted. Ed would record lots of stuff late at night with Donn Landee only. But Ted was a vital part of the band it would seem and Ed more or less dismisses him here.
Eddie dismisses everybody. And according to VB's book, things between DLR & EVH began to sour after DLR wouldn't be a groomsman at Ed & Val's wedding.
Eddie said in an IV he built 5150 his studio to stick it to Ted Templeman.
Ted is/was overrated . Ed ALWAYS gave Donn Landee most of the credit for the making of the albums . Teddy just approved and got way overpaid for it .
Valerie was a real dead weight. Of all Eddie had going he had to pick that dud.
Quite the contrary. She understood that he had deep and severe problems.
Total insincerity about Roth's EP "Oh yeah it's doing great." Slug off the beer.
It was doing great, lol. He's taking a drink because he probably knows Dave is out the door
Do you know him? because your comments aren't "very bright"
This is so sad can tell there both faking this whole entire interview and losing there ass off
Eddie Van Halen reminds me of Don Henley.
Polar opposites.
I think she reminds him of his mom that’s way he married her so young very controlling , I hope he find the rt one now I am not sure 🤔
It's funny but I read her book and got the impression it was the other way around - Eddie was the one in charge.
hahaha
Eddie coked out big time!!
Pop band !
The only place for women in rock is the bed...
the original Courtney love. I bet Ed can't even catch a taxi cab with out me she says
You just wish a woman like Valerie would look at you twice. Jealous much?
Josh Fierro u must be talking to a mirror
Since he was wasted most of the time he probably couldn't!
This is so sad can tell there both faking this whole entire interview and losing there ass off
