- DLR's details about the guitar stripes might be a tad exaggerated and conflating different iterations of Frankie when he talked about it recently (Dec. 2021), but here he is in 2006 with a similar story.
I wouldn't doubt the initial idea for the stripes came from DLR's mouth. He was the main driver of their image from 1974-1984. And as he admits here, they likely "borrowed" the stripe idea from a local punk band, The Dils (he incorrectly says The Clash in this video). Eddie, Dave and Alex were at this June 1977 show at The Whisky where The Dils played. The next time we see a photo of Eddie Aug 1, 1977 the guitar has stripes.
I remember this.
Roth was always full of $hit. And now.... he's beyond full of $hit. He can't sing, & never could. But he was super cool in the 80s. One of the best in the biz, & his growl was monster. He helped to vault the Van Halens to super-stardom. There's no doubt about it. Great lyrical song-writer too, & an imaginitive & original character. The definition of a rock star. It's a shame he turned himself into a circus-clown.
