It’s hard to believe that when this guy conducting the interview heard this he’d never heard it before. You can’t quite imagine that now with a song so instantly recognisable as Jump.
I was just listening to this again and I hear a little bit of what sounds like he could be channeling Genesis in there. The electric keyboard, some parts he's playing, sound like the one riff in "Abacab".
Sounds like the first time I tried to play it on a casio through a Kraco car stereo with 8 speakers plugged into it. Each time I hit a chord the light on the stereo would start to dim
Great stuff! Many moons ago this whole phone call was on youtube in six or seven parts (before it was removed). Awesome interview. I hope you are able to upload the whole thing. It's like an hour long phone call.
I have a portion of this interview as well. Before the start of this he plays his early demo of "Ripley" that was used in the movie "The Wild Life", and of course later on, "Blood and Fire".
The Mighty Van Halen : Definitely. You say "time - capsule" , I remember that summer and MTV being still fairly new etc.. - though they hardly ever played VH in my market , it was always the new wave shit & Pat Benetar (not that I don't like her, but MTV always played less hard rock, at least in the daytime) . I remember it wasn't till 1983 that hard rock (and many of those bands were considered "Heavy Metal" back then) was the most popular music. All the great hard rock acts were being played & promoted heavily then : Ozzy, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Billy Squire, Def Leppard etc.. it was an awesome time for music...too bad I can't say the same about now. Nowadays "mainstream" anything basically sucks ass...
With the benefit of hindsight, listening to the seeds of what would become an absolute classic worldwide hit makes fascinating listening. That said, I imagine it must have been excruciating for the interviewer at the time though!
Love rareness but I want more talk about his interactions with other stars and what he thinks of them. I would love to hear stories about the tour with Black Sabbath in 78. On how he and Iommi got along etc.
the intro sounds like it has parts from the credit/ending song from the movie ¨The Wild Life. Really cool song, too bad he didnt include that one on the 1984 album.
He did some music for that movie, bcse his wife was in it or wtvr. I think that there is some sort of legal trouble (now/ modern day) having something to do w/ the rights to the music, movie, something. I absolutely love hearing when musicians do demos/ and otherwise just sort of jam. Make sure to chk out the Smithsonian interview.... I nvr get tired of hearing him play.
He did most of the soundtrack for the movie, you can look up the songs on here youtube. The legal problems was about royalties for the other songs included in the movie, that were of other musicians.
where's the rest of the interview? i've been looking it for ages...i think he talks about randy rhoads, allan holsdworth and diver down in this one! thanks for the upload
I’d never know that just by looking at her ... she seemed so sketchy and looked annoyed anytime fans approached.. Hey those fans were Eddies bread & butter lady .. so he appreciated their loyalty & love & support

This is the kind of stuff I live for. I love hearing songs in their infancy.
This is so damn historic. It should be in the Smithsonian.
they got his Eruption guitar in there
@@benparsons4979 If Sammy was in the band, this would have turned into a sappy love song
The scratchy, over-the-phone quality to the audio aside, I think I kinda like this choppier version of the main riff more.
80's Fucking ruled. class of 85 baby!

Every time I listen to this I’m in awe, and that guy is like, I like how the notes decay. That’s it?
2:00 onwards sounds like daft punk 15 years before daft punk even existed. Visionary.
I get goosebumps when I hear the main jump riff come in. The world hasn't even heard it yet and its just fascinating as hell!
1982 interview on the phone before jump was done for 1984 album the creative genius within
Sounds like the first time I tried to play it on a casio through a Kraco car stereo with 8 speakers plugged into it. Each time I hit a chord the light on the stereo would start to dim
That synth audio sounds like an Atari 2600 having a meltdown. But I'd love to hear the whole thing.
This is the first time I have been actually able to tell what he is doing during the bridge on the synth part...
Did anyone else hear the makings of a little bit of Why Can't this Be Love in this too?
Ed likes his flange
Just a lil lol
Actually he was known for using a “phaser”…

....wanna hear the whole interview. I don't know why, but I find this stuff fascinating...
totally. love hearing the old VH interviews. Like a time-capsule.

I seem to recall hearing that ozzy quit sabbath cause he was sick of getting blown out of the water by eddie and the boys back in the day.

Earlier in the interview he plays a demo of Ripley/Blood and Fire (ie: the 'theme' to The Wild Life).

I wish I could hear this without knowing the finished product

yeah cool interview, lots of Holdsworth talk. I have more, but have to find my original
The Mighty Van Halen Have you posted the full interview man?
🤘🏼⚡🤘🏼 so it exists! WB should release the Deluxe versions of all their works, minus VH 97. Come back, even if its with Sammy!
Do you have the full interview?
I think I have the rest...but have to look around.
All on guitar.........fucking wow!
No. Keyboards

Dave hated it.
Lucky it was release in 1984 on best version.
@MrHideyoursheep if I remember correctly Eddie sorta bashes Randy.
Imagine Eddie joined KISS in 1982 and he brought this song to them!!!!!
"Hu?"
I wonder what he heard in his head was the same as the finished product...its all there just digitized...guitars were boring him lol Eddy was great
Interesting fun fact: His wife, Janie Liszewski is 15 years younger than him.
????
*ahem* goldigger
I’d never know that just by looking at her ... she seemed so sketchy and looked annoyed anytime fans approached.. Hey those fans were Eddies bread & butter lady .. so he appreciated their loyalty & love & support
Sounds like complete crap.
It's just a demo dude, being played over the phone. Relax.
It's called a ....demo.
