Boo hides
While I was sewing the box the fabric came in was next to me. For a while I draped one of the pieces I was working on over the top of the open box while sewing another piece. Boo came hurtling across the room saying 'pprp' and jumped on top of the fabric, which of course fell into the box. She then decided that while it hadn't been her intention, being in a box was actually pretty sweet and stayed in there for ages making prppy noises.

    The cotton I’m using won’t let me draft out that long. Well, it’s very possible it’s something I’m doing and not the cotton. So, you long draw and with the other hand are you just feeling the twist or what exactly are you doing the the hand closed to the nano? Are you getting a smooth cotton in the end?

    • @vampyyy
      @vampyyy 3 місяці тому

      The front hand controls twist and gives something to pull back against, the same as supported longdraw with other fibres. If you can't draft that long without breaks it likely means you've not got enough twist. I wasn't aiming for totally smooth with that spin, I wanted a little bit of texture to make the finished woven piece more interesting, but it's absolutely possible to get smooth if you want to.

    Is there a video which explains to a novice how to feed the spun yarn into the orifice? I just discovered, by reading the Ravelry troubleshooting posts, that the Nano does not take the spun yarn from me but I should maintain tension for spinning and then feed it in? I have had the Nano since October and have tried every tension band fix and yet still haven't spun successfully. I've just discovered that take-up tension refers to winding onto the spool, not taking up the spun yarn. (I have learned to drop spin during this time, however.)

    Thank you for showing this! As a newbie spinner with a love for lace knitting, I naturally lean towards very fine yarns… and am learning to spin it. So far, I’m managing lace weight 2-ply merino either on my supported spindle or on my brand spanking new EEW Nano2 and am working on consistency. It’s starting to come along. I’ve already got my first knitting pattern picked out. It’s an Estonian lace pattern and I’m hoping the nupps will help to hide the inconsistencies of my first efforts after my first mini-skein that I’m literally framing because I’m so proud of it. Spinning is new to me. Due to a spinal injury that’s leaving me with permanent nerve damage, I’ve had to take a break from lace knitting as I couldn’t sit in one position for long enough to finish at least one row of a knitting chart. A friend suggested spinning, as both the drop spindle and supported spindle would enable me to shift to standing or to different sitting positions more easily and I’d still keep a link to fibre arts. Now that I’m having more better days, I can knit again although for short periods of time only. So I alternate with spinning to keep me sane. It's fast becoming my happy place. Videos like yours help a lot when I can't spin, need information or need a break. Thank you!

    Is it possible to get those 3D foamcore inserts to fit Daedalus shafts?

    • @vampyyy
      @vampyyy 7 місяців тому

      Well you can buy pipe insulation or pool noodles and put them on, but you'd need to slit them to put in place as the ends of the bobbin don't come off. However since this video Daedalus have released the Falcon, which is designed especially for superfine spinning (though it does surprisingly well with thicker yarns too), so that would be my top choice for fine spinning rather than messing around with the Sparrow. The Falcon goes more than twice as fast at top speed, and has a really cool mechanism by which the flyer is aerodynamically coupled to the bobbin so even at those speeds you can still get very low takeup.

    Thank you for your video! I just bought the Nano2… my first ever spinning wheel. I am used to supported spinning (lace and cobweb) and thought the Nano2 is perfect for me. My mother felt like an outing, there was a crafts fair this past Friday, I took her there (we.re both yarn addicts). Whilst drooling over yarns I spied a stand with beautiful combed top… and they were also selling the EEW 6 and the Nano2. No extra shipping if I bought it then and there. Got 100 grams of gorgeous Norwegian natural white combed top as a free gift as well. Can’t wait to try it out! I’m waiting to unbox it just in case my SO decides to give that sweet little Nano2 as a Christmas present… he might want for me to wait until the 25th of December to do so (hope not!). If he wants to give me something else that box ‘ll be flying off in no time though. 😇 In the mean time I’m bingeing on videos. 😂

    Thank you i was so worried when i started using mine today (just arrived) and it started slipping! The thread hack worked pretty good, may need to invest in some super glue later tho. I think a D shaped shaft and hole for the pully would make this a non problem btw. There are many small motors out there that use the d shape to keep this from happening.

      Well, you have 2 options, the first is to set it to one side and learn with wool, the second is to relax and give it a try! It's totally possible to learn with cotton, people have been doing it round the world for a long time, so don't panic! Your technique will be a little different though, and at the start you'll just want to focus on getting a yarn that doesn't break... dealing with lumps and bumps will come later. I suggest you watch the longdraw section of the part 3 video and the cotton spinning video (right at the bottom) here: www.dreamingrobots.com/eew-60/ and this great video by Abby Franquemont: ua-cam.com/video/RBsQzJPxIQ8/v-deo.html While she is using a drop spindle, the technique is still the same, you just won't be worried about supporting the weight of a spindle on your yarn.

    Thanks for this and your video on spinning cobweb weight on the EE6. You've answered my questions - I want an electric wheel with a large capacity bobbin that I can spin extremely fine weight yarns on and most mentions I have seen of this wheel are people spinning worsted weight to bulky yarns. So not my thing, I love spinning cobweb weight silk but my knees can't keep up with the treadling that requires!

    • @vampyyy
      @vampyyy Рік тому

      Glad to have helped! You can absolutely spin an enormous range of yarns on this. For super super fine yarns I prefer the Daedalus Falcon as it's much faster, and I'm a very fast spinner, but it is very expensive and doesn't do the huge range the 6.0 does, and doesn't have the bobbin capacity either. For me this isn't an issue as when I spin fine I rarely need more than can fit on a bobbin, so I'm glad to have both to fit my varying spinning needs. The 6.0 is far far more versatile, as well as being considerably cheaper .

    • @opinionatedtatertot815

      @@vampyyy The Daedalus is way out of my price range and until recently I had no idea that the EEs existed as a more affordable alternative. I'm planning on setting up an Etsy shop with my Handspun so those larger bobbins to be able to keep the yarn in single skien will be fantastic.
