  • I have Sojourner, the travelling Daedalus Sparrow for two weeks, so during that time I am trying to push her to her limits to see just what she can do. Today's experiment was super fine yarn. I did find the takeup higher than I would have liked, but was still able to spin a very fine yarn. For wool, which is less forgiving, I think I'd need to make some modifications.

This was very interesting. I will certainly never spin this thin, but understanding the process and properties of spinning like that do help me with my regular spinning.

Is it possible to get those 3D foamcore inserts to fit Daedalus shafts?

Well you can buy pipe insulation or pool noodles and put them on, but you'd need to slit them to put in place as the ends of the bobbin don't come off. However since this video Daedalus have released the Falcon, which is designed especially for superfine spinning (though it does surprisingly well with thicker yarns too), so that would be my top choice for fine spinning rather than messing around with the Sparrow. The Falcon goes more than twice as fast at top speed, and has a really cool mechanism by which the flyer is aerodynamically coupled to the bobbin so even at those speeds you can still get very low takeup.

How would this do with long-staple flax?

I'd make sure it was very well hackled and use a distaff positioned just to my left and fairly low down so my hand is in a comfortable position, and then spin short forward draw, using water on my right fingertips at the point of twist insertion to smooth the yarn.
