I like my little hooks on top of my drop spindles. I can keep very consistent tension on the yarn when switching to winding on. I use the tiniest cup hooks I can find, and do a little pre-drilled hole to screw them in. I like to put a dot of glue in there, too. You don't need the half hitch with the hook; I just give it a couple of wraps with my yarn and that holds it secure enough.
