Quitting Games Won't Fix Your Problems

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always heard people tell me that one day I’ll grow out of video games because they’re for children and I’ll find more productive things to do with my time. The last time I checked, I’ve entered into what many would consider adulthood. Therefore, I think it’s high time I explore why this sentiment doesn't actually hold any weight. X (Twitter): dera...

    Something I find strange is that these people underestimate just how many people play video games. Every single person I know in my school has played video games in some capacity, from DTI on Roblox to Nintendo to Xbox, and I’m in high school lol. The fact that anyone still looks down on video games is so bizarre to me. They aren’t segregated by gender, race, or age anymore, and you know the people who complain about them watch the most brain numbing reality shows ever.

    I couldn't help but notice that everything that counteracts their desire to die all came from Pyras perspective. They may be two halfs of one whole, but Pyra and Mythra are distinct from one another, and while Pyra may have been optimistic, seeing hope for another option, Mythra was likely far more pessimistic. She was perfectly content with just disappearing from the world entirely and letting Pyra take over fully up until Rex forced her to wake back up. Plus, while they share memories, Pyra wasnt there for Torna, she wasnt the one who accidentally genocided a continent. The guilt is still there, but there'd ought to be a disconnect, simply watching things unfold in her memories, while Mythra was there in the moment realizing Miltons blood on her hands. She may have warmed up to the party throughout the story, but that trauma woukd have still been lingering in the back of her mind the entire game, and she doesn't have the same hopeful mindset Pyra does. You make a lot of good points in this video, but its still untimely half the story at the end of the day.

    A lot of gamers ARE losers though. The incel behaviour and “anti-woke” attitudes are pretty rampant amongst online gamer communities, and often go unchallenged. That said, blanket statements about ALL games and ALL gamers are ridiculous in this day and age. There are so many different genres and experiences available, yes there’s lowbrow content (AI slop, COD-style mindless shooters, mobile gacha games), but there’s also plenty of valuable and mind-expanding content available too. It’s like describing all music as one thing, or all literature as one thing, it’s just reductive.

    Simple, rich people who control the public opinion/ society does not profit much from them. It is a very cheap way of spending your time. You do not grind and make lots of money and spend it on women who spend it on random useless sh*t the rich people selling. Believe it or not even the simplest video games makes feel older people that they are dumb and getting very old > reminds them of their mortality as the guy said. Check how it is treated in some Asian countries where it has status and more money in it > totally different world.

    Honestly it took me until I was an adult to realize how lucky I was to have a dad that’s an avid gamer. He played D&D in his college days and now has thousands and thousands of hours in Fallout 4. His friends at his workplace are all familiar with games, one of whom even gave him this neat yellow rupee pedestal that he gave to me since I was more familiar with Legend of Zelda. He let me play Skyrim when I was 10 because he had played it before and knew what to expect, and plus the fantasy violence and mild swears of Skyrim are pretty tame anyway. Even bad video games have taught me what not to do while writing my books, and generally these fantasy worlds have greatly inspired my writing. I would’ve possibly never found the Wings of Fire book series if I didn’t discover a fangame on Roblox, and that book series inspired me to finally crack down on my ideas floating around and create books. I met my two longtime online friends through gaming. Yap all you want about my hobby being a waste of time, but it has formed my life and given me happiness I might’ve never found otherwise.

    The cutscene was allright but I really felt like they spent too much time beating up rex instead of actually planning a countermeasure or even discuss why Jin was even able to break the normal laws of Physics. As that would have been far more useful to spend the two days they had to wait for rex to recover. Tho my biggest gripe is that it had to happen in Tantal as i spent days trying to find the stupid fetter for nothing but a forced loss and a dysfunctional party cutscene.

    Games are a waste of time and a terrible addiction that hijacker’s your innate desire for challenge and progress.. Once your brain is wired to think that games are where the challenges and where progress matters is at, your brain will have a hard time reversing this unnatural wiring. Most will cope and claim games are essentially the same as watching movies, tv shows, etc. but It’s far worse in “ruining”/changing your brains subconscious processes that are vital to thrive in real life. Of course Movies and tv shows are the same “waste” of time, but it’s like watching a play. You aren’t messing with your challenging to progressing pathway, which video games are uniquely great at changing. This ofc depends on the type of games, but it’s the majority of modern video games that have this property. Chess is challenging in a superficial logical way, akin to mathematics. Video games are not the same as this, unless it’s a specific type of game. I can tell video game addicts can’t reverse their hardwired addiction as they’re dependent on video games and the neural behaviors it created. Even when you tell them to treat life like a video game, they can’t do it as the dependency is too great to pull themselves away from. So, video games are not something to engage in or to act like it’s not bad. Unless you strictly play multiplayer social games, like CoD games with real friends. Those can be fine in moderation, and can be healthy for a brain exercise and social cooperation and socialization. You can tell when a gamer is truly addicted when they make justifications about playing games as a major part of their lives. Akin to a bad addiction, they’re blind to the harmful and influencing effects of gaming addiction. They live life only to sustain a comfortable set of conditions and then play games for the challenging and rewarding aspects the brain needs to feel satisfied. Completely oblivious to how much of their life is being wasted in a fantasy/dopamine sucking machine. This is the epitome of a loser. One who lives for pleasure in an illusion of challenges & progress. It’s a shame these gamers aren’t conscious of this matrix they’ve fallen into. It’s such a strong addiction they have no awareness of it at all. They might think they understand it and think they are in control, but the subtlety of its grasp is the most malicious part of gaming addiction.

      Yeah, there’s a kernel of truth here, but the defense that “it’s like watching a play” is weak as hell. A play, huh? Guess what, Gaming could be called interactive theater or “digital storytelling". People get all philosophical about movies and art, but slap a controller in their hands, and suddenly it’s childish? This double standard is exhausting. Let’s not pretend that passively staring at a screen is inherently superior to actively engaging with a game. Both are leisure. Neither needs to justify its existence.

    • @garretmorris6237
      @garretmorris6237 Місяць тому

      You’re not getting my point though. I believe both forms are bad, and only benefit in minor ways with moderation. Video games could be considered interactive plays but that’s why there bad. It makes your brain think it’s progressing, completing obstacles, etc. Movies don’t have that, it’s just watching a story play out. Games are like engaging in a story that sucks your real life energy of working towards a goal and getting the reward when you complete the obstacles. It’s different, but some games Like FPS multiplayer games aren’t too bad in this context. It just depends on how you play them and how much it takes away from your natural desire for progress and reward. Like people spending near all day on COD trying to reach the top online rank, they’re striving for something that doesn’t matter. And that can hijack your subconscious mind into thinking games are where the important obstacles to conquer are at. It’s really more about how much games take away from your real life and how you look at games. If they suck all of your competitive energy away then there bad. If it’s for social fun and aren’t taking up a lot of time then they could be could. I just believe the vast majority of gamers are in the unhealthy side of the spectrum, even if they don’t admit to it, they’re essentially addicted to living life their hardest in games instead of in real life. I’ve seen gaming addiction take away more lives than drug addiction, in terms of wasting people’s lives. They’ll just do the bare minimum to survive with a decently comfortable life and then spend all their motivation on gaming.

      @@garretmorris6237 I know what you're getting at, do not get me wrong, I was just pointing out that movies do absolutely have that, and you're making sweeping generalizations about how "it sucks your energy." It's an overreaction and an exaggeration tbh. It's ridiculous to suggest that only games (or gamers) have this problem while movies are doing everything you listed here. Explosion-based movies, cash grab blockbusters, etcetera. are the problem (that you don't seem to be complaining about). Action and horror movies promote the same dopamine energy as a random horror game (Outlast, Silent Hill, etc.). In fact, they release more of it. You're stuck in a 90s-2000s mindset if you still think they for losers. Games are better than Doomscrolling news, Netflix, social media, etc. At this point, coming from someone who doesn't even play ironically. It's almost 2025, so it's time to get with the times. It's not really that hard or deep as you make out to be, really. You're cherry-picking extreme cases to make your point, but if you look at the whole picture, it's clear that things are different. I'm not trying to convince you to change your mind, given that it seems like you're set on your opinion. I'll leave it with you, good evening 👋

You disappear into them, self isolate, avoid developing coping skills, and put your life on pause for a fantansy. Its not even your own fantasy, its a corporate fantasy. Ive seen people wake up from their gamer periods in their 30s, not maturing at all. They dont fit in with the younger people now, and the rest of us have grown up and left them behind. Great you got good at a game no one cares about, stunting your personal growth, and self isolating yourself. Its why your single and lonlier than your peers. Not talking about people who casually play a game here. Im talking about people who identify as a "gamer".

    I think one of my favorite details that you normally wouldn't stop and think about until much later is that Rex and Noah share a talent art in Infinity Blade, thus retroactively implying that said blades are connected, and that Noah's blade (his real blade, not Lucky Seven) is Pneuma. Granted, It would be more lore-accurate if Matthew had some kind of tell, but I think this connection is a little more direct and concise. Besides, Matthew already has the whole parallels thing down with Ghondor II.

    As a good first step towards de-devaluation of gaming as a hobby... I suggest to stop devaluating interactive movies. There's quite enough of quite good ones already, you could familiarize your friends and family with those. There's literally a Batman short series of two seasons in form of the Telltale's games - freaking everybody knows Batman and his closest associates at the moment! It's like the perfect way for action movie fans and enjoyers.
