This is a topic I've always been passionate about. I love video games, and to see people continue to promote this rhetoric about everything being an addiction is so frustrating.
If it weren't for some of my favorite series, I wouldn't be who I am today. Video games are a part of me, and I love them. Art, through any medium, is NEVER pointless.
There's always this idea about it "not being reality," and that's so wrong. It is an art form; it is entertainment. Art is made by humans based on their observations of the world. It is inherently tied to reality; it is *real*, and it is *human*. I could go on, but it isn't necessary. Good video, man!

Thank you! Yeah, I agree 100%! I understand when people argue that fiction in and of itself isn’t the way the world works and therefore not “reality,” but what intrinsically makes a movie or video game any less of a “reality” than say, a book? What then is their definition of reality? Great points!

I wouldn’t be here right now typing this if I wasn’t for Persona 3 Reload, a game that came into my life right when I was 1. insanely depressed and 2. wanting to give a long JRPG a try just to see if I still liked the genre. That experience saved my life which is why seeing the drama surrounding Reload’s DLC was so frustrating to me. People are so stuck in being cynical and jaded toward games that they can’t see the value in the titles we have now, even Indy productions.

Glad to hear Persona had such an impact on you! And yeah some people are always going to find something to complain about with games (or anything really). If they can’t find anything to complain about, they’ll move on to the next thing. Thankfully it’s usually just a smaller group of loud people that complain.

Everything is Entertainment. Watching TV, sparkling time with family and reading books it's all entertainment and the same is true for video games. Why don't we hear stop watching TV or stop reading, they're essentially the same thing? It's the stigmatism that older generations have that video are a kids toy or bad for you. If you strike a balance between everything, who cares what you do as long as not harmful. Except Call of Duty. Jk. (Sort of)

I played a lot of Smogon Singles in the competitive Pokémon scene before I eventually put it down in college, after my online friends quit. While I didn't enjoy it anymore, my time spent was was far from a waste: it taught me how to think abstractly when I brainstormed new builds for the ladder, as I could conceive of them as ideas and pieces. It let me center teams around unpredictable movesets with actual plans, and enhance my rhetoric on forums.

Boomers: "Video games are a waste of time"
Also Boomers: *proceeds to put 60,000 hours a week into Candy Crush*
In all seriousness, I think that certain games ARE a waste of time, but most are not. There are certainly a lot of games that exist primarily to waste/burn time... for example, I find there is little point in playing online shooters or something of that nature aside from just burning time or getting good. And hell, a lot of f2p mobile games are literally INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED to waste the time (and money) of the player. I prefer a game that will have some sort of obvious positive impact on me. Xenoblade has had an immense impact on my development as a person and my core beliefs, and many other games have also impacted me positively on a smaller level being teaching me a lesson, or helping me come to terms with things.
Even then, depending on how you play said "time-wasting" games, they can still have a positive impact such as developing friendships with people you play with. I might not care for shooters, but if a group if friends has a blast together playing a game, then that is a great thing to see and I'm happy for them.
It's downright silly to say that video games as a whole are a waste of time, because if that was true, the same argument could be made for every single TV series, every single movie, every single BOOK... frankly, EVERYTHING we do could be considered a "waste of time." If some activity has any semblance of positive impact on a person, then it was NOT a waste of time for that person.

The nintendo switch has become my most utilized piece of gaming hardware... I can play it whenever/wherever i could use the distraction and it doesnt interfere with my daily tasks as a responsible adult because of its portable simplicity, with a large enough library that i always have something for everyone, from solo to party groups. Gaming is one of my lifelong oassions, and im fortunate to have the ability to still enjoy them in my free time. Plus, i can share those experiences with the younger generations of my family... it's a great bonding activity

Videogames are such a part of me that I can't really imagine my life without it. I still have other hobbies and I'm not addicted because sometimes I take accidental breaks, but if I'm being honest whenever I "screw up" such as staying up late, not studying enough or skipping a workout its mostly a roll of the die, sometimes its Reddit, sometimes its UA-cam, sometimes its Videgames.
At the end of the day, I've accepted usually the problem is myself and that's OK, videogames just happen to be a convenient scapegoat because they usually have a longer runtime than other forms of media. I do think you should diversify your media consumption and definitely exercise or at the very least make attempts at taking care of your body with a decent diet and good sleep, but if I'm being honest life would be kinda boring without games.

Couldn’t have said it better. It’s very much up to us to control how we spend our time and to know when we’ve gone overboard. We’re never gonna be perfect with it, but that’s part of being human.

I stopped playing video games in the name of wanting to be a better man, to be a mature person and have a better life. I regret every day making that decision.

Yeah it’s strange how I’ve personally never heard anyone say they felt like they wasted their time watching a show or movie, but I have heard people say that about games

Dropping video games and porn won't help me find love. I've given up on that prospect a long time ago. So now I just have no strings attached sex and play video games with my sad pathetic life lol. Still better than the daily cutthroat rat race of a world out there.

You’re not a loser do what you want to do. Just try to control yourself with the porn bit. I’ve been dealing with a really bad addiction to porn for a while now. It kind hurts now just thinking about anything porn related. Don’t fall too deep in that pit I don’t know if anyone can get out.

@nvender9062 Tbh i don't think porn is addictive. I'm not a no fapper and I never will be. Porn isn't any worse for you than playing video games or watching a movie. It also brings out normal levels of dopamine as sexual activities (much like eating) are normal and even good for you, so long as you don't fall into hopeless territory, and most people don't do that. The vast majority of porn viewers have a healthy relationship with it. And, honestly, beating your meat is good for you and can help prevent things like testicular and prostate cancer so I'll take that over never orgasming and living a sexless life. Sex is hard to come by these days and I'm gonna wanna substitute. I don't let it consume my life as I can just as easily go a few days without porn and be fine. Just like I can go a few days without playing video games and be fine. The good thing about living a simple life is being pleased and content with simple things, and porn is free and lucrative, I'm a grown ass man, and I can do what I want.
