Everything You Need To Know Before Watching Dune: Prophecy
Theodosia (a name with the intriguing etymology of "god-given" or "god-giving") is presumably an early version of what (over time) would become the later Tleilaxu face dancers with much more seamless identity transitions. That the Bene Tleilax are now also in the picture, you have to factor in the possibility that one of the key characters may be an early version of a ghola as well.
Super FUN !!! But, they should invite the OLD actors of TV/Movies to participate in this Dune: Prophecy too. It would be FUN to seen Patrict (Cap Picard) or William Hurt, etc doing 1 scene in this new show!! And about Desmond Tahir, it will be amazing if they find worm or wolf or others animals DNA mixed with human DNA !! Remember that the BOX test is to see if the Human is not an ANIMAL !! And LETO 2 de God Emperor - child of Muah`Dib is clear a Metamorphos and NOT human !!! -- ua-cam.com/video/jefnf8_4WsM/v-deo.html
I don't mind the show, it just seems like it's too short! They're trying to wow us, but it's hard because you're expecting it. With 8-10 episode shows things are allowed to be a little more of a surprise. Like when I saw the head tattoo guy I already knew he was gonna fail. Like... we didn't even get to savor his downfall. What works best for bad guys _we know_ are gonna bite it, is that we get to see them do the bad stuff! Here we get introduced and in the next scene basically, we see he wasn't worth two cents. Yuck! That said, it's been a wild ride, but it really just feels like nothing has really hit or _gone off the rails,_ yet. But from what we've been given, I'm down for another season but I'm not sure how that'll pan out.
i don't like Desmond's power, its undercooked and doesn't fit in this universe. also I'm not a fan of his acting. the use of face dancers so early in the timeline. the common knowledge of freeman culture also is out of timeline. the idiotic portrayal of acolyte BGs. it all doesn't make any sense in Frank Herbert's cannon. i will say if you squint and disregard all these things yes it's a dune universe tv show and that is for sure fun. i hope it gets a second season at least. also i am so impressed with the actress playing Tula.
"UNDERcooked"??? 😅
Abu seems crushed. 😢
I think that this show is just not for Abu & he's trying to make sense of it, but sometimes a show just isn't for you. I say this because his criticisms just feel very contrived and feel like he's throwing things at the wall to see what sticks & it's not making sense to me. All love though!
Mentats were not only mentioned in "Dune: Part One", but they were identified as two characters in the story and what they do was pretty evident in the film. So, if that name drop in last night's episode seems like fan service, so be it. It didn't hit this Dune fan as being that, but to each his own, yeah?
Feel like the criticism of the show is… was no where to be found when they interviewed the show runner
It checks a box in a way that just befuddles and raises weird questions that don't matter to the story itself. Mentat getting brought this late in the show just blindsided me because now all I was thinking is "Where have they been this entire time?" especially now the plot is playing around with living machines still being around.
I think yall are overthinking it, I think she is a facedancer. It’d be absurd to have a character with abilities identical to a facedancer, only to not be a facedancer. Idk.
I did expect the Emperor or someone to laugh when House Harkonnen, who was just elevated to High Council status, immediately opened up an inquiry on their first day
Well,.. FWIW I'm enjoying the show. As I'm not taking a degree in scriptwriting, all the microagressions against creative writing dogma that Abu is dwelling on don't even register on my critical scale. I do hope the writers, that clearly care about this Dune universe (way more than the chumps that diid Rings of Power or Witcher), don't take too much offense at Abu's attacks on their professional abilities. They seemed like a nice bunch when you guys interviewed them recently, even strongly complementing the Gom Jabbar podcast. Seems a bit rude to now take a giant dump on their performance in their life's vocation.
"Ixian? What the hell's an Ixian? Just slap a leather jacket and tattoo on the man and surround him with a bunch of neon lights in a dark dingey city. That's what these sci-fi fans love right? The same old derivative cyberpunk trash."
Gotta agree with Abu the club/Kieran Atreides stuff was shockingly bad. Once again the episode would've been massively improved without it (Ynes interrupting the council would've been more of a surprise). I don’t think Valia asked the face dancer to turn into her brother; I think she’s there for a greater purpose. The reason she turned into Valia’s brother was to demonstrate she is now willing/prepared to use her “gifts” to help Valia.
When Desmond spoke about Arrakis wanting to kill everyone, I thought “guess Arrakis is the Australia of this universe” :D
Abu, you mentioned in one of the earlier shows that they should have cut the Kieran scenes and had Valia and her spy reveal he's working for the resistance. I think that idea explored further would have made this episode so much more compelling. Imagine for a second we see Inez and Kieren fooling around in ep 1, then we see the resistance reveal from Valia in ep 2. Then in episode three we see that valia hates the Atreides and we're wondering if this nice guy is actually a scapegoat. Ep 4 we get Valia's plans to throw Kieren under the bus, which hits so much harder after episode 3. Then we see the club scene from Inez's perspective. We still don't really know if Kieren is with the resistance, but he's hinting at it while also giving it second thoughts. Is he going to chicken out? Maybe Inez is secretly in on it too? Who knows. Then we see Desmond tell the guards to get the thinking machine people and the only thinking machine we've seen so far is at the sisterhood. Is he going to strike at Valia? We know almost everything but we're missing the one piece that brings it together and it adds so much tension. The big reveal is at the lansarat. We see Desmond bring in guys we maybe recognize from the background at the club. We can start to piece together what's going on at that point, right before the big reveal happens. It would hit so so so much harder and all it takes is removing some scenes.
LOVED this episode. The acting!? They even had me being like "wow, look at Kieran Atreides emoting!" I feel like this is the first episode I really want to rewatch. That Landsraad scene: chef's kiss
lol -- did you both watch the same episode?
I don’t understand Theo’s motivation for undergoing that painful face dance transformation, to mimic a long dead sibling in detail that she should have no knowledge about, just to offer “I got you” emotional support to Thalya. Cool reveal, but doesn’t make sense
"Sisterhood Above All" and "Twice Born" --two banger "Dune: Prophecy" episodes in a row! The final scenes in both gave me chills. What more can anyone ask for? The first one was a gourmet chef's kiss but I really enjoyed the second one despite the fact the Ixian came off as a stereotypical thug / arms dealer. Here's another thought for you... Could it be that he was from the lower classes, the non-scientific intelligentsia of their society or was he just a common thief? My money's on the latter...
I want to believe those is letos eyes but did it song like a cyborg or thinking machine
Desmond and Harrow are real standouts because they're some of the only weird performances that we all love to see in the Dune universe.
1% Mongolian 😂😂😂
Did anyone catch Desmond whistling before he went into his trance.. similar to Bijazz
So, when Atreides says to the princess (at the club) that his father survived an atrocity, are we meant to assume that the boy that survived last weeks Tula massacre is his father?
@@poneill65 it was confirmed by the actor who plays Kieran Atreides on the Dune Prophecy companion podcast
Seeing as the Ixians provided the hunter-killer to the rebels, and it's possible that the Ixians are behind the tech inside/behind Desmond (or/and the blue-eyed robot), perhaps it was in their interests to inform Desmond of the plot to give him even more influence with the Emperor. After all, Valya was planning to use the exact same knowledge to gain the exact same influence!
I also did not understand why Theodosa/Facedancer took on the form of Valya's dead brother at the end. I kinda like your idea of some personal demonstration to Valya but it's a stretch because clearly it's a very painful process transforming. Also, as only two people alive woudl have any reaction to this dead brother, I cannot see ANY action he/she/it could have performed offscreen either. (tho I can imagine 1000 better choices to imitate if Valya had this power at her disposal!)
I must say, the ACTING in this episode was so good. I kept having to rewind so I could appreciate how each and every one of these actors showed emotion. Especially in the Landsraad scene--the facial expressions on everyone! I thought the Harkonnen nephew did great, Kieran Atreides, and of course Valya. Everyone was on their A-game. Also, omg: we got Ixians, we got mention of Mentats, we got the word "Bashar" being used, we got "Kanly," and we got a FACE DANCER. I kept cheering at all the lore stuff in this episode. Loved it!
Anybody else notice the ghola eyes one of the sisters drew while in their artistic trance state? I think the scars on Desmond's back are from the installation of the Ixian tech that allows him to burns everyone. It always seems Desmond's right eye gets lazy when he uses his power and his fingers apply pressure to his right temple. Curious what his power is and hope it is revealed before the end of this season.
Post episode doc reveals Theo is Tleilaxu. Absolutely crazy reveal.
Are y'all Buffy/Angel fans? Theo's choice to be Griffin felt a bit like the "would you like me to lie to you?" moment from the Angel finale.
Theo did it to comfort Valya and establish the existence of Tlielaxu since you can't tell Dune Messiah without yhem.
I hear Abu's concern but it was really good episode.
They were cooking this episode no pun intended
Yeah - imo not self flagellation. He burned many plp which took a toll on him physically but someone/thing is absolutely controlling him.
Holy shit. Theo is a face dancer? Leto II is dead ass staring at the sisters from the future? Desmond’s blood becomes the genetic blueprint for the eventual Kwisatz Haderach?
Maybe Desmond being a child of Harkonnen and Atreides blood like Paul?
I definitely think that’s Leto judging the sisters actions I thought something would happen and it would switch from robotic sounds and eyes to eyes that look like a human but still that is definitely Leto watching and judging. Crazy
Bene Tleilax Face Dancer. They are metamorphic transhumans and sterile.
Idk if it’s because I haven’t read the books but this was a horror episode that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire hour. And everything in the throne room I was like what the fuck is about to happen this was a great episode
Was pretty good wow 👍
WTF happened in the end?! what was that?????
Possible face dancer. I believe.
Theo is an early experiment by the Tleilaxu, according to the post episode thing by the creators. I guess we know what the Face Dancers are gonna be like in Messiah. :)
This episode took my breath away. It was terrifying.
I believe SW Andor is the best in the franchise.
I think your take on this show abu is just a product of today’s world of impatience. Two episodes into a show you’re saying it’s not loving enough. That’s unrealistic expectation. Sure some great shows like arcane pull that off. But not everything is as well made as arcane. I just think k this is a lazy way of saying you don’t like the show. You podcast folks just do t have time for a show to move at a medium or slower pace. Which is just shocking. The way we as a tv show watching culture have become so impatient is just tragic. By your words I think k you’d be a great employee of Netflix who immediately cancels any show that doesn’t hit them within the first five minutes of an episode. Just go back and listen to your complaints. They are u readable and irrational for a show that’s 2 hours into its first season. Is there knowledge out there that says this is the only season? I don’t think so. But because of people like you and most other podcasters there is a good chance we don’t get a second season because of lazy lazy lazy complaints like “I’m not emotionally invested”. Come on. The other host said it perfect. He is having fun. Sure things are clunky at times, but it’s fun. Just a big time L take from someone I really like listening to.
Season 2 has not been greenlit and will very likely be contingent on the critical and commercial success of the first season. They have only 6 episodes to work with right now, to prove to HBO that the can make a hit show. It's not unrealistic to expect a show that is 1/3 of the way through it's season to hook me and be better. It's also not my job to only praise the show and be dishonest about my thoughts and feelings. I'm not arrogant enough to think my opinion will sway the bigwigs at HBO. You said it yourself: Arcane did better. Last of Us did better. Many shows have done better by the time they reach the 1/3 point of their first seasons. My opinion is that this show also needs to do better.
If you don't like the B&K books - then FFS, DON'T do a podcast TRASHING them. The badmouth-giggling insults in your show are juvenile and bad enough (because it ruins what is otherwise, a really good podcast.) I've read Dune 9 times (so far - but I'm old AF.) I enjoyed all the expanded universe B&K books (and have even read them not only in publication order but chronologically as well (including the Frank books because NERD.) I enjoy them because they're more of the Dune Universe and I never expected them to be written in the same style Frank wrote, because B&K aren't Frank. (I've yet to read the newest Calidan trilogy.) To be honest, while I love the first 3 Frank books, the last three aren't anywhere close to the first three, and are a bit of a hot mess because Frank's life was a hot mess and so much of his life during that time was reflected in those books. (The horrid homophobia in God Emperor...) I have to say I'm very tired of the Frank Purists™ bashing these books. It's insulting to the fans and those who worked hard on the series that people like Quinn think it's okay to decide his pronunciation of names like Richese are correct over B&K's pronunciation (they're both executive producers not only on the show, but also on the Villeneuve films, and it's their IP. And don't forget: Villeneuve was supposed to direct the pilot of the series.) Brian Herbert isn't some yahoo off the street that decided to write fan fiction (like the Dune Encyclopedia) and doesn't deserve to be treated as such. He's Frank's son, who received Frank's notes with his blessing when Frank was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that had an exponentially lower survival rate in 1986 than it does now, (and it's still not great.) He didn't decide he was an author after Frank died. He collaborated with Frank on both Man Of Two Worlds and part of Road to Dune. So what if some of the lore is different than Frank's books? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills because I see more people giving the Dune Encyclopedia more credit when even Frank wrote in the forward that it's not a reliable source, yet people treat it as if Frank wrote it when it's fan fiction at best, and there are more contradictions between that and Frank's books than in the B&K novels and Brian grew up with Frank and those books. It's like the ASOIAF purists (many who are Dune fans) hating on the show when not only did the show runners fix the mess of the last two published books when GRRM attempted to throw off everyone who'd figured out the Great Mystery of the plot because he put the answer midway through the first book. And they're the ones who can't see the mountain that George, "borrowed" from Dune. Of course the show was contractually obligated to get to George's ending. George would never have agreed to to license his work with out it after being a show runner himself. (It's basically the end of Dune Messiah.) [Full Disclosure: I work in the industry.] If enough people continue to bash the show (and especially the B&K books), not only will we get no more shows in the DU, but Dune Messiah will have a harder time getting out of pre-production. It's all Legendary, WB, HBO. It's bad enough that the Industry is currently on it's knees ("survive until '25" is the current mantra), due to COVID, then the very-necessary strikes of WGA, SAG-AFTRA, IATSE, & The Teamsters, but the oncoming global economic chaos if a certain handful of bazillionaires have their way. If that happens, all we'll get are reality-based and CW-level shows that can be churned out on a very small budget. Whether or not you like B&K's writing, we need more shows like Dune:Prophecy. Yes, 6 episodes is crazy short. It's part of the reason of the upheaval in their production, just as 8 episodes in S2 of HOTD was too short. Those decisions didn't come from the show runners, but the executives bankrolling them (HBO/WB, who are also in charge of Dune Messiah.)
You've stated a lot of valid opinions here, but you have a number of facts wrong. Frank gave the Encyclopedia his blessing, try reading the forward more closely. A deep reading of the Encyclopedia versus Brian novels reveals that Brian tampered with the lore far more devastatingly and his books have many more discrepancies than the Encyclopedia. He also seemingly wholesale lifted entire ideas and characters from the Encyclopedia without credit, and likely used his legal muscle to kill it. Just because he's Frank's son does not mean he's shielded from valid criticisms about his writing, storytelling, and business decisions. Just as Frank himself is not shielded from valid criticisms about his later books in the series (icky homophobia, sexualization, etc). I suggest you listen to our "The Messy Canonicity of Dune Explained" episode for a detailed history and analysis of all of this and an explanation of why we dislike Brian's novels.
You make good points. I’ve read the BH books, love Dune:Prophecy, and all aspects of the wider Dune universe. I’ve never heard Frank mention House Ordos but that doesn’t mean I don’t like the video games. I love the David Lynch film even though I’m fairly sure Paul couldn’t magically make it rain. However, personally, I will never believe that Frank meant Marty and Daniel to be Erasmus and Omnius. Those are newer inventions, and completely valid ones. But just as you argue the Encyclopaedia isn’t canon, then I can argue anything else not FH is too because everyone’s opinion of canon is different . Everyone will interpret and add or change when they add to a larger body of work. Doesn’t mean we still can’t respect and enjoy it though and folks should have more respect for other interpretations.
Kamala lost because Mauler and Nerdriotic didn't get the sequel trilogy that they wanted
❤
Why the hate for Valya's use of the voice under the stressful situation of helplessly watching her beloved brother drown, when Frank had Teg become the flash while under the extreme stress of being tortured? How did the first reverend mother transmute poison? How many shots do you get when you take a fatal dose of poison? Why is Paul the Kwizsatz Haderach? He was only trained in the way of the Bene Gesserit, this alone would not make someone "The One". I choose to see it as Valya, Teg and Paul illustrating humankind's genetic evolution. Could Valya's voice ability be why Harkonnen's are included in the Bene Gesserit breeding plan? One of humankind's early ancestors had to pick up something and use it as a tool and then teach the rest how to do the same. Did a chimpanzee practice jabbing a stick in a termite mound to eat more efficiently? Or was it an environmental/outside pressure that led to an instantaneous thought/action? I believe the Dune Universe requires the viewer/reader to think more critically than other media. Aren't the Heads of each House (Corrino, Atreides, Harkonnen) members of CHOAM? If so, we do see them in the books. I believe in "Dune Messiah," Scytale requests all of their CHOAM holdings in exchange for creating a Chani ghola. While we don't get to see how the CHOAM bureaucracy functions, we are introduced to actual members. Thanks for the Dune dialog guys!!
I really hope this gets a season 2. Can’t believe it’s already halfway done
The slapping scene makes sense to me. As a woman, I'd never just slap my friend because someone else ordered me to do so. I've witnessed guys do it just for fun. Therefore, it does imply that they had no choice but to obey the command and how powerful the voice can be 🤷🏾♀️
The boy Tula saves can't be Keiren because the flashback happens over 30 yesrs ago and Keiren isn't 46/47 in the current timeline.
