TAIJI 1 BETTER* than X-DOME ! - Solo Wild Camping in the Kilpatrick Hills
A wee hike in the rain to a solid night out wild camping in the 3FUL Gear Taiji 1 tent . Excited to make a couple of modifications to this brilliant little shelter and I'm starting with the door loops. Had a free Saturday so decided to explore the hills above Glasgow and wild camped at an old farmstead ruin . I'll get pelters for this title and thumbnail - but I really mean it :D

An enjoyable and long awaited paddle camp on the beautiful Loch Katrine to test out the modifications I've made to the 3FUL Lanshan 1. Taking some inspiration from @longsufferinghiker and his vast array of mod tips for the Lanshan tents I've managed to improve this tent a great deal. It's now super quick and easy to pitch, and very effectively too Looking forward to more wild camping adventures...

The Naturehike Vik 1 may not be the best ultralight wild camping tent in the world but in my opinion it's up there if you take into account it's price. It certainly looked after me well on this trip where heavy rain and hail were amongst the many elements as we were off the beaten path in search of a water supply and a pitch in the Campsies.

Wild Camping at a Ghost Village in Scotland
Hiya pal, hope you are well. You recently gave me aome advice on looking for a little more room than my bobcat (on a budget) as i looked at your 3ful taiji 1 that i like the look of but lao tnis come on my radar qith the 4season t door inner. (Very light) . I do carry one pole to mod the bobcat rear. Thoughts between the taiji 1 and lanahan 1. Which would you choose for a mixed weather camp and feel safer in. (Not this weekend though 💨💨).as close to bobcat in strength as it's a tank of of tent but with a tad more room and good for winter camps Cheers pal
Hi 👋 I would say the main differences are that the TAIJI will go up more easily and will be more likely to retain the original pitch without adjustments - the lanshan will however be much lighter and take up much less space in your pack. Comfort wise I’d go for the TAIJI. If I was going long distance and didn’t want to carry weight I’d go for the lanshan. 👍🏻
Bit confused how you can compare this to xdome when you haven’t tried one you even posted this before anyone received it and that’s without going in to specs of both. Your title was nothing but click bait
Hey Lisa. What I said was that this was going to be a better tent for me to get for use this winter because the Durston inner has too much mesh for a Scottish winter. Too draughty. The Durston will I’m sure come out with a solid inner at some point though like they did with the XMid. Cheers 🙂
@@campingcaledonia76I’ve used the pro for most Scottish trips in winter , have you seen people in USA -20 using single walked tents. Regardless though your passing judgement on a tent that hadn’t been released and you haven’t even tried it.
@LisaTheWanderingGeordie I get what you’re saying but you’ve missed that I was saying that the Taiji will be better… for me! Just because of the solid inner. The inner for now on the Durston is mainly mesh - I also mention in the video that of course the XDome is going to be a brilliant tent! 🏕️
Seriously you made this video before the Durston tent is even out, so you're talking bollocks straight out of your arse.
Hi! Great review! What is the actual length of the inner tent? How tall are you? Do your head and feet touch the inner tent in the sleeping bag?
Thank you!! I’m 5’10” or 177cm and there is more than plenty head/foot room for me 😊 Manufacturers state the interior length is 212cm. Height to inner ceiling 95cm.
@campingcaledonia76 Thank you! The Chinese often understate the actual length in the description, that's why I asked 👍
@GenaSpesivtsev Always happy to talk wild camping and tents! Cheers 🙂
@@campingcaledonia76 Very good! Wild camping is my favorite topic 🙂
Great tips and presentation. Thanks saved it. I just bought one haven’t used it yet but it’s a Meir. ? any thoughts take care
@@pueblo1960 Hey 👋 Thank you for those kind words I really appreciate that. I’m not hands on familiar with the Mier tents but had a little look online and the same will apply by the looks of things 🙂👍🏻
Tbh not sure it can be realistically compared to a tent nobody yet has ? Pretty sure that’s more about driving clicks than reality Plus, just so you know, the x boil tabs insert on the other side to what you used here which gives a full and sturdy round shape.
Cheers Mark 🙂 Aye the xboil is a brilliant little stove, I’ve used it tons, was just making a quick morning cuppa and the pot sat on fine without clipping it up. Versatile! You’ll see from a few previous vids I’ve got it clipped up fine 🤣 The Durston comparison was about the mesh/solid inner and also pretty tongue in cheek! As I said in the video the X-Dome will be a brilliant tent 👍🏻
@ not too bothered either way. Just a bit too click baity titling for me. Having said that, you made a good vid and open case and I’ll check some others out. The xdome will end up like the xmid anyway, choice of inners ultimately
@@markl2815 Thanks, I appreciate that and I do hear you Mark re the click bait thing. I’m actually on the same page as you with regard to that when it’s blatantly dishonest. The solid inner option when it comes (and it is coming) will be far more suitable for camping in the Scottish Highlands. All the best! 👌🏻
As has been said, you cannot say a tent that isn't even out yet is second to one that is. And you're not comparing like with like. The Durston is coming with a solid inner. It's really unfair to say that the 3F UL is better without even seeing, let alone, trying the X-Dome. Not the crap I'd expect to hear and it calls your inpartiality into question. I'm unsubscribing. Ciao.
If you actually listened to what I’d said you’d know that I said the Durston was going to be a brilliant tent. What I did say was that it isn’t for me, for now. Sorry you’re unsubscribing but it’s not my fault you’re hard of understanding pal. All the best 🙂
Eh.. just look at the title of the video! .. I understand perfectly. well.
@ Look closer at the title. Listen to what I actually say in the video. You’ll understand better. Sorry I’ve annoyed you Mr JTRavers69 but you’ve fairly made your point and I’ve responded. Enjoy the rest of your day 😊
@campingcaledonia76 yeah, title says Better Than X-Dome. You know full well that just using that in the title will get the algorithms going your way. I stand by my comment. Have a lovely evening and good luck with the channel.
@JTRavers69 Thanks man. Yes you’ve got to play the game to get anywhere I’m afraid. A lot of time and effort goes into making these YT videos and wee channels like this will get lost unless you do what you can to boost engagement. There’s flagrantly dishonest clickbait out there which annoys me too - but this video was more tongue in cheek. Durston will be fine 😆 I’m looking forward to seeing the solid inner on the X-Dome by the way. As I did say, twice, in the video, it’s going to be a brilliant tent. Cheers 👍🏻

Taiji is a nice tent but I think you're missing the point of the Durston X-Dome 1+ 😄 The solid inner is in coming, X-Dome is fully freestanding and is 1kg.
Cheers man, not missing the point though I was just saying the X-Dome isn’t for me, for now 🙂 A solid inner on the Durston will be a marked improvement for the climate here.
Great video and great to see the tie out mod on the front door , have done this to my Lanshan 1 But will definitely be doing it soon on my Tajji1 when it arrives 👍

Yes the temps are falling for sure Rod. Thanks man.
Still like this tent to replace rhe bobby 1. I have this one, helm 1. Opinions fella. Helm worth a few more pennies for more space.
Hi Andrew thank you for visiting the channel. I would and did choose the Taiji as an alternative to my Bobcat but I don't think there's a huge difference between the Taiji and the Helm, I've never owned a Helm so can't speak from experience on it.. You'll save money getting the 3FUL and also get a groundsheet included. The material on the Helm is big denier poly vs 15D ripstop silicone coated nylon on the Taiji. Out of the two I'd say the Helm will withstand the highest winds, but the Taiji will hold it's own too. See Andrew Park's video for a walking pole hack to strengthen wind resistance. Helm 4000HH v 5000 on the Taiji. I think the Taiji is better looking and the brown version blends into the environment better. The Helm is a tad heavier too. Either tent will fit the bill though. Thanks again, let me know which tent you went for 🙂⛺

Dan did say they will be rolling out a solid version of the X dome, I'll bide my time for the solid version. My X mid solid is awesome, even in snow, so long as you can get the pegs in the ground lol.

@campingcaledonia76 . Sorry to ask again pal but I come to you as you are a bobcat user too. I am wanting a robust 1 man tent that isn't too heavy but more room than the bobby. I was torn between the helm 1 or the Taiji 1 however I have noticed that the 3f UL has just dropped to £109 or £1@9 for 4 season inner. That is nearly 100 cheaper than the helm. I like a budget but is it a belter for my needs. Basically I am torn to save up for helm or give this a go as not to many reviews on this but lots on the helm but it is older.
@andrewstennett3186 I’d say go for the Taiji and pocket the difference 💰 🙂 I’m sure the Helm is great and you’d be happy with it… but I own a Bobcat and a Taiji and and I’m more than happy to never buy a Helm. I think the Taiji is better looking too. Enjoy new tent day when it comes whatever one you go for 😊 🏕️ 👍🏻

Great 1st impressions of this tent. I would love to see this go head to head in some bad weather with the owx bobcat 1 that i own and use on wild camps. I love the bobby and its a fantastic solid tent. The only issue i have is i find the aleeping pod very tight and i am not a big chap. Its better with the mods or trekking pole hack at the back but its atill snug. The Taiji looks a lot roomier but is it as robust as the bobby as if so it could be my answer to sleeping better on the fells. Cheers in advance
Totally agree with you Andrew, I absolutely adore the Bobcat. I like it so much I forgive the really small sleeping area. The Taiji 1 is FAR roomier inside and while I don’t think it’s as bombproof as the Bobcat, it’s going to withstand a decent amount of heavy wind and rain. Not crazy weather but in ‘normal’ bad weather it’ll be fine. Thanks for watching fella ⛺️👌🏻

Hi, Ive just bought a taiji 1 here in Australia, had to buy it from 3ful online store.I based my purchase on reviews of the taiji 2, I needed a 1 person freestanding double layer tent, which did not reguire the inner to be pitched first. I use this style of tent for kayak touring.I did not realise that it came with the extra die down points on the poles, so had ordered a pack of 4 additional clips with my initial purchase. I didnt get any extra cord so ordered more guylines from 3ful. Apparently, according to 3ful the short pole doesn't get clipped on, it just rests on top of the two main poles, which are both clipped. When I bought mine a month ago, it only came with the 3 season inner. By the time I ordered my extra guys, 2 weeks ago, they had 4 season inners in stock, for another A$110. Their website still doesn't reflect this. Great to see your review. You appear as pleased as I am. Im going to add a small vestibule from a nylon tarp so I can cook in a larger area. We must think alike. I bought the same chair so I could sit inside or under the tarp. Im heading off in 3 weeks for another 200klm paddle of the Murray River. we are in our late 60s, so we are breaking the river into sections. Thanks again for the review. Cheers, Peter

The extra accessories really help.
Beers and Noodles. Priorities RIGHT there!! 😁😁
You know it. The main reason I try to reduce the space and weight of kit is to secure more space for noodles and beer 😆
"Once it's erect you can pick it up and move it about" is my favourite line from UA-cam today. Fnaaar etc! Loving the drone shots. Tent looks good. Must resist, I have enough.
🤣Aye it's pretty easy to get it up! Thanks for watching Pete 🏕
That is a good scoop for you to post - the first known review of the Taiji 1 tent. It certainly seems to tick a lot of boxes. Your camping experience immediately identified a couple of modifications for it. Nothing unsurmountable for you though. I like the space inside, with good head clearance and the internal walls not likely to touch the outer nor you and your sleeping bag. Its 5000 HH is well better than most tents. Its slim footprint will hopefully allow a greater choice of suitable pitches for you, especially with the tent design allowing you to pick it up and readjust its position, as terrain and views dictate. I will be interested in your future thoughts on the tent, once you have thoroughly tested it under a variety of conditions. A comparison with other reasonably priced tents will be interesting. All in all, a good video about a good looking tent!
Yes, was lucky to be able to get hold of the Taiji 1 so early. Will get the craic with you re the tent before long fella. Thanks for watching! 🙌
I'll be on the lookout for a one man tent pretty soon and that Taiji looks hard to beat!
It’s PDG, not perfect but will be a brilliant little tent. 🏕️ 👌🏻
If you pitch it with the point down you have more head space. It's called 'The Australian Mod'. I bet you didn't know that.
Nice khaki bungee BTW.
😂 G’day mate. Fair dinkum I’d not heard of that one before you’re right 🦘
👍👍
good vid, youve obviously watched " long suffering hiker" vids ;-)
Yes absolutely hence me mentioning him twice and crediting him 😆
Nice paddle and camp. Great video. Thank you for sharing 😊
Thanks Arnstein and thanks for taking the time to tune in. I’m currently watching your Lindworm video. Incredible location 🤩
Thank you, a thoughtful solution to a pain in the behind problem! Happy camping.
Thanks for watching, glad you found it helpful 😀👍🏻
