CAFFEINE: Temu vs Italian moka pot test

I was flabbergasted to find out that for nearly half a century I'd been missing out on the EASIEST AND BEST way to make almost-espresso at home. Will a $8 Temu moka pot perform as well as the Italian gentleman's gadget?
Xterra Red Rocks: the short course 'adventure' option with ropes

The Xterra Red Rocks short course is a bit special. It begins on private land in Bata Place, behind the Bata shoe factory, weaves its way up and through Te Kopahou Reserve, before peeling off from the medium and long courses.... People on the longer courses get to run the last few kilometres along the beach and it's only the short course folks who get to experience the famous "adventure option"...

Four months off mountain biking: how much slower am I now?

It's been four months since I hit the trails at Makara Peak, thanks to a foot fracture that saw me in a moon boot over summer and I'm STILL not allowed to run yet. I recreated the same loop I did the last time I was here, 20km and 560m of elevation, which is about 2.5 hours of riding. I wondered why my home ground was overrun with parked cars... I've ridden all that on my trail bikes, including climbing up the roped part... There used to be a track down from about the 5:20 mark that went straight down the cliff to the quarry... That one was fun getting up.. and the last time I went down it, they had bulldozed the last 10ft away.. barely managed to stop the bike due to how steep it was, then burned my arm man-handling the thing sideways across the end down onto the track. That was just before they closed the quarry and they removed more making the track nearly non existent. At 8:26, if you head up the stream about 2-3 minutes, there is an old small dam, probably built to supply the quarry in the late 1800's. There was also a way to get back to the top of the 1st section via that gulley (probably long overgrown, wasn't a track as such, just a lack of gorse in a contiguous path to the top ridge. Useless post note. If you look at the building by the gate (and the concrete pillars that match it to the East)... That is the skeleton of the old Quarry workshop.

It's currently at a friends place and we've been putting in a crib wall and making a big yard out of his multi small terraced yard. (And we popped his mum on it at his last house... Dad wanted 2 things.... a convertible Mercedes with the corrugated side panels (I got him a model)... and an empty yard, with a pile of dirt... and one of those little diggers.. The previous radar to the 'Golf Ball' was definitely in need of repair in the end. I used to ride trail bikes on the firebreaks before they shut off the access for Mountain bikers.. damn mountain bikers... hey wait.. that's me... Damn, damn me all to hell... anyhooze... on a windy day the radar (the good ol conventional wide frame) would be sitting there wobbling about a foot back and forth rather than rotating... I suppose we also shouldn't have been able to stand right in front of it.... Another interesting thing about the Golf Ball (A doppler is hiding inside I believe.. I think I managed to gain a peek back in the late 90's when someone was working on it and indvited me to have said peek) again...anyhooze.... when they were planning it, a friend (Railways radio tech) was involved, and advised the (Americans?) that they should build the ball in the clear area that is the subdivision (or was it the old mill) at the base of the road, not at the site as Wellington has a habit of turning on the wind... with up to a balmy 250kph gusts. The (Yanks?) said they knew what they were doing, they had done many back in the US... and proceeded to build the dome onsite... It blew down before it was finished... An example of how windy it gets up there... When they built the 1st Win Turbine just down the road... An inspection hatch later ripped off the top unit, and was never found. I see there appears to be a small Doppler golf ball 7k ENE from Hawkins (SE from cable bay on a high peak)... might be there to monitor small traffic, even boats, crossing from Blenheim/Picton. PS. The concrete pad in the last scene is the old radar foundations.

    I REALLY need to get on my bike and give it a whirl... (but the shock has a click and I have used that as an excuse not to ride... That and taking up throwing plastic at trees... I find some track building decisions quite odd sometimes... Putting the track back out beside the vehicle traffic (2:28) when they could have juggled the walking track it crosses a little and had the MTB track stay OUTSIDE the fence away from vehicles Especially when they made this a G3... which implies they want low skilled riders to be able to use it (Kids etc)... so why then make a section unsafe (entering the particular section with your back to the traffic, and as a car driver I personally have cut that corner before it was a bike share... and even closer when I rode motor bikes). Then there's the flow killer at 3:44 that they could have just avoided by going slightly to the left instead of the climb (Like the stupid climb on the Rollercoaster at Pol Hill that almost everyone stops before and rides back to the top.. all for a right hand sweeper round and back, there's a whole section of track that most riders avoid (... well that and the deadly abrupt end after it).

Ps most helmets usually only has 2 helent shells, the pads make up the in-between sizes

      I would go for the "Small/Medium" size as that is suggested for 54cm to 58cm heads!

    Looks like a lot of dedication and hard work for a awesome end result 👍🏻 Are you going to start carrying some of that cookie dough around for some 'resistance' training?😛

    • @trailbogan
      @trailbogan 9 місяців тому

      I think 2kg of cookie dough is more likely to provide resistance by way of sad unwanted body fat, rather than an upper body workout at this point ;-P

    I'll see your Macra Beach run, and raise you a Makara to Owhiro Bay via the Gold Stamper... with a Steel Frame Milazo MTB... Carried up cliff faces on a shoulder, rope repelling at the far south of Makara coast... and generally pushing the bike for about 1/3 of the 60 something K... Arriving in the dark at the Red Rocks quarry. Luxury...

      @@trailbogan Abseiling sounds like we had some form of proper equipment and training... We had a huge rock with a piece of old fishing net stuck in a crevice... and it didn't reach all the way down so we had to hook the bikes on it and try and unhook then from the other side... (and jump the last few feet ourselves... Then climb up the (steeper than 45deg) fence line with the bike on out shoulders, one hand on the fence and using the sheep ruts as steps... Then there was that time we went through the Mungaatooks on the same bikes... lightly dressed... in winter... from Trentham via Haywoods, coming out at the Akka's at about 9pm (It got dark at 5)... Oh and we had no torches.

    Or... Selleys Watershield Silicone Aerosol 200g (Currently about $17 NZD at Bunnings/Mitre10. I went Skiing in what seems another lifetime ago.. and my cheap Warehouse gloves held more water than was frozen on the mountain. Next year I went with the same gloved, sprayed with that stuff.. My MTB gloves get more wet with sweat than the Ski gloves were.. and it was a blizzard.. Works great on material shoes (my Warehouse MTB flats etc) too. I did at least 2 jackets and the gloves and a couple a pair o shoes with one 200ml can. It is a silicone, not a wax, but on woven things like windbreakers, works a treat.. and the material remains breathable... BTW K... You really need to get a cheap audio recorder (or old Cell Phone) so you can hide it in a pocket and get better audio on the blogs... I'm looking to get one of the tiny ones that clip on like an old iPod Shuffle... On the MTB videos it would probably clip on my chin strap unnoticed. [EDIT] Don't forget to clap when the video is running to sync the audio...

      @@trailbogan How could you refill your hydration pack if you make it waterproof... wouldn't that make it a dehydration pack? hmmm Powdered water... just add water... sorry. In that state of mind tonight... too much sun I think, throwing plastic at trees all day...

    I remember the bottom of Lazy Fern used to have a tree leaning across the track from the left... that used to take out your shoulder on the way out... A nice finish to the day (think I hit it about 3 times on my old Milazo or the Foes... I thought Koru and Lazy Fern shared the entry/exit bridge back in the prehistoric era... Maybe it's just me... UA-cam seems to disagree...

      @@trailboganI still remember circa 98' giving Zac a hand clearing one of the tracks along the top.. Fairly sure we cleared past the trigg.... then I rode my Milazo with 1" slightly bent home modified Rockshox down a track that I think was the predecessor to Trickle falls... as I don't hemember the corkscrew.. and I DO remember going down a piece so steep/straight that i could keep slow, but not stop with the Vee brakes... and there was a 2ft drop at the bottom that I was forced to do... on a full size frame with the seat fairly much at full height... (It then ran a long way left... and I can't find any track now that has that combo... Not sure I could do it on the current bike.. (But 25+ years later could also have something to do with that).
