  • I've been keeping an eye on the Radome (from far away) since my last visit a few weeks ago. Yesterday, it was still there. But this morning, while at the summit of Makara Peak, I glanced over to Hawkins Hill out of habit and it had disappeared!
I cut my ride short, chucked my bike back in the car and hurtled over to Brooklyn.
The contractors were still up there putting the finishing touches on the job and told me that the dome had just "crumpled like cardboard" when the time came.

that radome building was constructed 1989/1990 - i have a copy of original drawings: because i drew them. so 35 years old. not 50.

Looks like an old ARSR series radar antenna. Probably ARSR2 or earlier. And probably obsolete now as it would be 50 years old or so. (Air Route Surveillance Radar)

Hi there, do you know if the radar externally has been installed yet or the old radar is down completely, or is it still a construction site? I am a photographer and wanting to swing by but cannot see it without a lengthily drive.

I’m not 100% sure but I was at the wind turbine on Friday and looking across to Hawkins Hill, there didn’t seem to be much up there!

@@trailbogan thank you so much for the response, and so fast. It looks like a bit of a walk with 20kg or so of gear, but looks like it will be worth a go. Have a lovely evening.

Hope you took one of Wellies longest gravity rides back down via Barking Emu & Carparts then on down to Aro or Karori depending on if u were headed home via the City or backroads.
If only there was a Gondola to the top I'd ride that all day.

I definitely cheated and rode down the sealed road 😂

@@trailbogan trickier terrain but the track has very few pinch climbs unlike the road... on the trailbikes there were a couple of detours off the road... but we had petrol to help with the pinch climbs
