Lazy Fern 2023: How much faster does a track get after an upgrade?

  • Lazy Fern has just reopened after a couple of months' of TLC. It's been a while since I regularly used Lazy Fern to exit the park (it's usually SWIGG or Karearea these days) so I thought I'd dig through the Strava archive for my all time fastest time, and see if I could beat it.
Will a newly groomed and rebuilt track make me fast enough to make up for not having ridden it much for the last few years AND able to beat my best time out of 40 previous attempts?

I remember the bottom of Lazy Fern used to have a tree leaning across the track from the left... that used to take out your shoulder on the way out... A nice finish to the day (think I hit it about 3 times on my old Milazo or the Foes...
I thought Koru and Lazy Fern shared the entry/exit bridge back in the prehistoric era... Maybe it's just me... UA-cam seems to disagree...

Even looking back at photos I have from 2015 when I started going there, it all seems very different back then, too, I am sure the prehistoric era was even more crazily different!

@@trailboganI still remember circa 98' giving Zac a hand clearing one of the tracks along the top.. Fairly sure we cleared past the trigg.... then I rode my Milazo with 1" slightly bent home modified Rockshox down a track that I think was the predecessor to Trickle falls... as I don't hemember the corkscrew.. and I DO remember going down a piece so steep/straight that i could keep slow, but not stop with the Vee brakes... and there was a 2ft drop at the bottom that I was forced to do... on a full size frame with the seat fairly much at full height...
(It then ran a long way left... and I can't find any track now that has that combo... Not sure I could do it on the current bike.. (But 25+ years later could also have something to do with that).

@TheButlerNZ how fascinating! And was Zac the namesake of Zac’s track up there today?

@@trailbogan Yup. He was a 'Do anything for anyone' kind (I only met a couple of times).. He took in a friend of mine who was having trouble at home. (That's how I happened to be up there, we drove up in a beat up ol Toyota Ute he had.
Back then the peak was covered in tussock grass, sparse scrub ... and gorse... lots of gorse,
