Crash Team Racing (Demos) - Debug Menus
Hidden debugging features have recently been found in the demo versions of Crash Team Racing, thanks to Niko. Four menus were found in total, featuring a level selector, a game mode changer, character selector, and ghost data selector. These menus are not present in any retail or prototype build of the game.
Note that despite listing all tracks and arenas, attempting to access anything other than Papu's Pyramid, Dingo Canyon or Blizzard Bluff will freeze the game, as there are no files on the disc. As for the characters, you are also limited to Crash in most cases due to the game loading the drivers in a pack, rather than individually.
Also note that the game will take some time to load the maps when using these menus (~20 seconds), which has been edited in the video for obvious reasons.
Lastly, there is also leftover data from a partially removed menu that would give a row of 8 preset configurations, each with a fixed character and track. The race presets match those seen in footage of the E3 demo.

Well, everything from 13:24 onwards explains why the cutscenes from Fenomena onwards look the way they do in the GBA version, they were from this prototype! And the Velo defeated/vanquished cutscenes not even being animated might explain why Real Velo isn't in the GBA version (and that he's technically spoiled before the reveal since his model is used as a placeholder for his minions).
18:54 *Holy shit.* I always heard that in some other prototypes/demos of the game the characters that used the Velo Mask had that blue podium that Velo's minions used instead, but the thing got an actual item roulette icon of it's own? I *have* to know if it still laughs like the Velo Mask or not.
The white Velo Choppers look crazy good, I've always wanted a closer look at them when I first saw that prerelease video of Krunk's boss race and thankfully this prototype still has them.

Loading mini-games should've become a standard during the DVD era, now we're 10 years past the expiration. I'm gonna die mad about Namco's patent troll bs. It did nothing for anyone, and now the tech is irrelevant.

I'm glad that it worked, sadly I wish that the pack would include (CustomCups , the changing icons mod, victory voices and paint mod) with the Retro-Fueled and Everything Ever - Nitros Oxide Edition - Only USA . if there is a way to include them with the modpack ? then that would be great, you can't merge 2 or more Xdelta files without causing the game to break ~

Do you know if it is possible to change the point system? I've always found stupid and unfair that positions 5-8 all get 0 points. It would be better if it followed the point system adopted in motorsport, like points to top 6 like in F1 until 2002 or to top 8 like in F1 until 2009.
As long as the source code for that function is already decompiled (I think we did), we can change anything in the game.

Unfortunately PS2 is not fast enough to run the game at 60FPS either.

It seems to me that they needed the music for this level in prototype asap but the composer didn’t wrote it yet, so he quickly wrote something that reflects his (or the whole team’s) general understanding of the vibe this soundtrack is meant to give, not even thinking about adding this to the final version of the game

Man, it's wild seeing a full quality version of Blizzard Bluff before they had ice reflections in.
it will be a challenge to port these menus to the retail, or a pre-retail build I guess but it would be a great addition. And the music before start is actually cool too.

So, out of all of this, the most interesting pieces of information is how they recorded the N.tropy and Oxide Ghosts, and the fact that Fake Crash, Penta Penguin and Nitrous Oxide werent even present at that time of the debug was constructed. Fascinating.
Woah! Blizzard bluff going by a codename of "Desert2"? Could this mean that the track was originally going to be a desert themes track? So interesting!
that's absolutely wild and considering how the map looks, it's a legit working theory

Technically it still is, as the final track is in fact a half-desert, half-taiga hybrid

The performance profiler is also the same with the rainbow rectangles. We can't draw it cause the timer configuration was removed, but the system is functionally the same

We find stuff by decompiling. There's also a performance profiler that looks exactly like the one from Jak debug builds, with all the rainbow rectangles
Hi, so the mod works flawless for Single Race and Cups...however, when I try to load an Adventure Mode save, or create a new one, the game crashes with a red screen. This is on PAL version. How do I solve this? Is the mod supposed to be playable on Adventure Mode?
