Crash Bandicoot: Warped (July 17th, 1998 prototype) - Full Gameplay

- It's finally here. Thanks to all of you who trusted our work and contributed to our fundraiser to help preserve this prototype. Enjoy the Christmas gift.
The SCEE Preview Version 1 disc of Crash Bandicoot: Warped has been found (labeled Alpha Demonstration Disc). It can be seen in many magazine previews (and trailers) at the time, across US and Europe. This is the SCEE variant that was sent out to the European press, although an identical copy was also distributed in SCEA territory. To name a few: EGM, GamePro, PSM, PSExtreme, Superjuegos, Consoles Plus, and Das offizielle PlayStation Magazin, and the official website trailer.
This build marks a point in development where the game was half finished. Some magazines described it as 50% complete, while others reported it as 80% complete. In any case, while most of the stages were present, the game still had many alpha elements and ideas that would be trimmed over the following weeks, leading up to the August 14th prototype, dated a month later, which, while still in alpha stage, was much closer to the final game.
Some of the highlights include the clock crate, silver relics, a caveman lab assistant riding the triceratops, a shorter Makin' Waves, a very early Tiny Tiger boss fight, leftovers of the futuristic bonus round in Gee Wiz, unused death routes for Dino Might! and Future Frenzy, some early level names, the enemies in Future Frenzy having a completely different design and behavior, Mad Bombers having a unique gimmick with flying bombs, and the remaining bosses and all levels from the fifth chamber onwards completely absent (aside from Mad Bombers).
While SCEA had more frequent builds to distribute, SCEE only had four discs in total: News Version, Preview Version 1, Preview Version 2, and Review Version. Only the News Version is left now, which was a reprint of the E3 1998 kiosk demo. As you expect, we are actively looking for this and the other remaining builds.

What a wonderful christmas present. Thanks to everybody who contributed to getting it released!
The fact that this was all created in 6 months is impressive. They were fast with making all this.
In a hot summer day.
I bet many of the elements of the game were simply just transferred over from Crash 2, assuming the game's code was modular enough. This'll speed up development by a lot, the real time consuming work comes from the new level design work & implementing the new abilities.
@@JoeNuttss Yeah I noticed that too with a lot of the prototypes they made. Like with Crash 2 prototype, there was a lot of Crash 1 elements still in there.
@@JoeNuttssI think they also had to make new engines for the vehicle levels and edit the new engine to allow the bigger draw distances since a video show that if you played Crash 3 levels in Crash 2 engine you can see a lot of popping.
@@JoeNuttss Obviously.
that original theme is so nostalgic to me because I remember hearing it on the Crash 3 website back in the day. It's crazy it isn't even in the final game lol
It could have just been used for the title theme, and then the final music be used for the warp room, because they do have the same theme. In the final version, the title theme has a bit of the beginning of the title theme the first and second game has, and then the warp room theme plays.
This was the best Christmas present the Crash community had, very good!
I had no idea that the caveman lab assistant riding the Triceratops made it past the concept art stage! Thank you to everyone involved in releasing this!
I’m kind of sad it got scrapped now
@@jess648I believe it got scrapped because of memory and technical issues. If you look at 13:15 the caveman assistant’s position glitches out and then he’s seen by the checkmark box falling through the floor.
In theory I like the lab assistant riding the triceratops but in practice I’m glad it was cut because it’s just a mess
@@mattbegay1354 They look janky but they are intentional I believe- first he's getting shaken to the front of the triceratops' head (note his riding animation is now slightly different) and he then gets thrown off and squashed, as a little bonus animation on the death route

Thanks Darkaiser for your work! Hope we find the E3 build soon :D
Hopefullt
Nice job Bandicoot's!
You all should be very proud of this gem of a prototype!
Hopefully you all can get together again & find that Warped E3 version 😂
Congratulations to everyone in the Crash Community on this amazing find!
Love you all ❤

I just got 105% of Crash 3 completed the other day. Thank you very much for preserving this prototype!
A Crashmas miracle! So thankful for those who helped preserve this.
I love seeing this type of content about prototypes and early game stuff
Holy smokes!!! I wasnt aware there is yet ANOTHER PROTOTYPE of Crash 3!!!!!
So prototype dates the other one we had for few years now by a month, right?!
Im going to enjoying watching this bro. Thanks so much! 🧡🧡🧡
this is the greatest crash warped prototype since the prototype for sliced bread
A side by side with the release version would be great, like link the controller to control 2 versions.
would make it super easy to differentiate any and all minute differences.
The Future Frenzy and Sphynxinator ones are just incredible! 😄
I can't believe it's called tomb too
Why were those completely left out of the final version? I only meant some of the stuff. Some of it remained the same in the final version.
This is awesome! I'm so happy you guys were able to get it!
This is so cool man... i love beta/alpha content of my favorite videogames! It has a lot of interesting and cool differences like the Lab assistant riding the dinosaur is crazy.
I also really like the original theme, it has CB2 vibes. I can't explain it but it feels oddly nostalgic and weird. It really changes the mood compared to CB3 music. It's like a leftover from CB2 or somenthing.
Future frenzy seems to be the most drastically different compared to every other level. I'm kind of pissed that they added backtracking to that level in the final version, but Naughty Dog really seems to enjoy making players retrace their steps so I'm not really surprised, either. The secret warp room having a secret entrance was interesting. Maybe they intended for it to be like CSB where you had to unlock the warp room portals via one of the secret entrances instead of relics. But if they did that, I guess relics wouldn't have as much of a purpose beyond being required for 105%. So, I can see why they scrapped that idea if that was the intention.
Overall a very interesting prototype. Thanks for the footage and everyone who contributed.
That backtracking thing not only made it harder, but it takes up more time, because we're repeating what we already been through. In Wrath Of Cortex, that type of thing does not happen anymore, unless you're just repeating the level to get the relic, but repeating the level for the relic does not bother me.
Holy shit this is actually amazing I did not expect another build to be found again
Now i have other reason to play Crash 3, thank you!
Best Christmas present ever ❤🎉🎉
I knew this game watching my old brother playing it when i was 3 years, he completed all crash bandicoots with all collectables, even CTR in the highest difficulty, my frist video game was CTR and crash bandicoot, it's one of the most special memories i have, ty, will play it when i have time
Now this, this is the stuff I like~
Time to dive in and see how one of my favorite childhood game could've been, heh
Hell yeah! History is here!
Oh my god this is awesome.
This really makes sense why "Mad Bombers" is called the way it is.
Without this gimmick, it never really made sense.
"Tomb Too" to "Sphynxter" to "Sphynxinator". C'mon on! They should have called it the "Asphynxiation".
But the one that's weird is "Roadkill". Just.... so out of place...
One more thing: The "Future 1". Obvious placeholder name. But HOLY SMOKES!!! What IN THE NAME ARE THESE ENEMIES?!?!?!
They look..... eerie. Like they dont belong in Crash's universe at all. However, this gives off that "dystopian" feel to this "bleak future", should Cortex win, so perhaps they were onto something with this design.
PS. I love the shorter Aye' Matey ngl. It feels better than retail imho.
This is awesome! Best Crashmas present ever!
Though Crash may disagree, now that he has to use his arms to cover his pink underpants...
Happy to have donated to this
Am I the only one who noticed something in Tomb Wader? At 1:19:34 keep your eyes on the very left side of the screen and slow the video down. I noticed something that appeared and it looked like a clear gem in the distance. It was spinning like the gems do. Was it actually a gem or something else? It lasts until 1:19:36 when Crash moves closer to the portal and the camera moves away from it. If anyone can use the free cam mode to clarify this, I would appreciate it. And also thank you Darkaiser for uploading this. This seems much earlier than the first alpha build of this that was released a while back.
That's the water from the main path, the lack of walls in the background makes it visible from the distance
@@Darkaiser Huh. Interesting. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. I love these early builds of games I grew up with. Thank you again for making this video
Thx you
This is CRAZY! Question: Will the other prototypes get released sometime?
Releasing prototypes is a matter of finding them. And finding them comes down to who it is that does the finding. If they're picked up by the same person who owns this disc, then the release depends on if they can be paid what they ask.
@@josephwj7199Ok
Is not a decision relase a prototype must be found before. and in the worst case all copy are lost(or throw probably)
@@amunve I hope the second case hasn't happened
I think that the prototype with the least information there is is the Crash Team Racing one from E3 because the videos I found are very confusing, I don't know if they are from a single prototype or several and I also couldn't find a photo of the menu of that prototype
Yes there is barely any footage of the E3 1999 showfloor unfortunately. Most of the "E3" gameplay you see is just from the same B-Roll footage of a much older build.
My brother used to get really worked up insisting that Crash 3 and Crash: Warped were different games.
This popped into my recommended and I’ve been on a Crash binge lately, but the most curious thing I’ve seen immediately is the blue gem in Toad Village. I assume that’s just a remnant from Crash 2’s Turtle Woods?
Woah this is cool 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Just curious, apparently there was a code where you could play the demo version of Spyro The Dragon, could that code work on this version of CBW?
Excellent uploads as always
Nope, there is no Spyro demo data in this version. I'm glad you liked it!
its interesting to hear the original warp room theme
It's not the original warp room music. It's the demo soundtrack for the underwater levels
good to know@@mrmister3782
@@mrmister3782Oh, i didn't knew that. That's why it sounded like an underwater level. I remember playing the Crash 3 demo in Spyro and this sounded at the start. It was a placeholder all along?
Yes, according to Josh Mancell (who made the original soundtrack) it's a demo track he made for the underwater level
here we goooooooooo
Hey that version of Future Frenzy are truely more interesting than i though: i love the 2-leg jumping freak, the spiked shell are more cute
thanks, ahora mismo lo probare :o
Awesome! I wonder if there are any inaccessible locations you can go to through hacking
i wonder if opening the second medieval level on crash edit would reveal the underground bonus assets
Yes the crates are still there, you can see a screenshot of the leftover layout on TCRF
How did you guys find this build ?, by the way great job ! 👍🏻
¿Dónde está la gema azul de Toad Vilage? 🤔
Did you also show the remnants of the futuristic gee whiz bonus stage in this video? You mentioned it in the description but from what I saw it's not in the video?
They are just crates floating out of bounds, you can't normally see in-game. Check the TCRF article for a screenshot.
The boxes in the futuristic gee wiz bonus stage where still present. That is also the reason why you never get all the boxes in gee wiz.
@@Darkaiser oh I see, yeah I read that part in the tcrf webpage, guess I was really hoping we'd see gameplay of something more substantial. Especially since I think there's a screenshot of that stage in the game manual
That theme music is way different lol
I just decided to try out this prototype on ePSXe, and I'm getting this weird game crash on startup. I've never had an issue with dongle protection on the Spyro prototypes that I've played, but on this one, I get an "Unknown Opcode" error before the title screen animation finishes playing out. I assumed it was due to the dongle protection, but when I added the file to both memory card slots it didn't change anything. I'm not sure what to do with the alternative "xdelta" file either. :/
Well ePSXe is very outdated at this point, so this could be related to the plugin or your settings. The dongle must be inserted into slot 1 by the way. The xdelta patch is an alternative you can try, just use Delta Patcher to apply it.
@Darkaiser Ah, so there's a Delta Patcher program I can look up to get it working with the xdelta file? If so, I wasn't able to get the build to work on DuckStation with the memory card file either, so hopefully this method works out. Thank you for the info!
Where are the cutscenes and other bosses?
it's so interesting to see early versions of your favorite games. can I ask where you found this?

I wonder if the build that shows the beta warproom ever be found (the one you see in the sphere)
It's possible, we are trying
This looks pretty similar to the August prototype
I wonder why they changed the enemies in the futuristic levels
Maybe it's because of the game's plot
39:48 How did you get the blue gem?
By the way, thanks for bringing this version to us.
No way to obtain it normally, but you can press L2 in the pause menu to get all colored gems
So the gone tommorow (furture frenzy in the beta versions) nope the game ?

Just load the dongle file into the memory card slot 1
Which emulator did you use?
i enter the link you put it and download the game but it hang and music stop on min 0:10 why i play on epsxe emulator is any other link give me complete game
If you don't mind me asking, do you (the modifiers) use as the "base game file" (the unmodified game files) by inserting the disc into a PC and then ripping its files with a software like ultraiso, or download the game's .bin file from the internet and than modify it?
I'm not sure I understand your question, what do you mean by "modify"?
@@Darkaiser
Modify = make mods to the game
@@zahavzilberman3646 If you are referring to this prototype, then this is not mod at all. But for the CTR modding I don't know about each modder, but it's expected for everyone to be using a rip of their own physical copy of the original game (not an enforced rule in practice, but you know what I mean)
@@Darkaiser I know the game in this video is not a mod. So bottom line, some may use the .bin file and some rip a copy from a phsyical disc, and the latter is the expection? Is there a problem with using the .bin file?

An xdelta patch has been added to the download page, try that one if you can't use the dongle. For Duckstation, try using the Shared Between Games option and set the shared path to that mcd file.
I tried duckstation as well & it doesn't seem to wanna work properly with that specific emulator...
However I tried this method on ePSXe & it does work over there so I'm gonna say it depends on the emulator you currently have.
The sound of gems/crystals is the same of Spyro?
Naughty Dog and Insomniac had a great relationship, so it's not surprising that they would share stuff between each other - also because of Universal, who provided them many of the sound effects. But regarding your question, yes it is the same SFX.
Not work on emulators (DuckStation) and i don't know why.

Did you ever think about doing some simple google searching to see that it is a beta? And that it shouldn't need to simply "look like" a beta?
@@josephwj7199I think he meant that the game looks too complete to be considered in "alpha" state like the warning screen refers to it, which I personally disagree, since it meets the definition of an alpha cycle. Beta would be when all features are implemented and no major changes will happen, being mostly related to bug fixes and polishing. The August 26 prototype is a good example of a beta version in this sense, and even the developers updated the warning screen to reflect the new development cycle at that point.
@@Darkaiser The definitions do vary a lot between people, it seems. Though yeah, this could easily fall into the alpha category by many people's considerations.
