How to Find a Sense of Self | Internal Family Systems (IFS)
How to Find a Sense of Self | Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Hey there, welcome back to the channel! I’m Conor McMillen, an IFS-trained life coach since 2014, tuning in today from chilly but beautiful Germany. In this video, we’re diving deep into a question many of us ask: How do I find my sense of self?
This isn't about going on a journey or searching for something "out there." Self is already within us, and by shifting our focus and perspective, we can start accessing it right here, right now.
In this video, I’ll cover:
* Why it can feel like "self" is hidden behind other parts of us
* The power of self-awareness in recognizing when parts are in the "driver's seat"
* Practical steps to bring more self-energy forward and allow your true self to lead
I explain the concept of the “multiplicity system” within Internal Family Systems (IFS), where we each have various parts shaped by past experiences, memories, and their unique roles in our lives. Understanding this framework can make it easier to connect with your own sense of self and bring compassion to those parts.
If you’re interested in becoming an IFS coach or want to dive deeper, check out my Self-Leadership Coaching Training- internalfamilysystems.org/training

Just 2 mins in and I have this to say….. There was actually something my parents should have done to develop my sense of self and that was to pay attention to me to mirror to me how to pay attention to myself in a way that develops that I am a person in and of myself. It’s a hard thing to do this to yourself. Especially as an adult, that as a child, was groomed to serve the parent’s sense of self. It feels unnatural and sometimes narcissistic to pay so much attention to myself.

What if your too aware of yourself. But nothing changes. Any tips on how to work with a part that constantly feels left out, lonely, alone, even in a crowded room. But also extreme sense of loneliness. I get where it’s stemming from but it never changes and I ruin the relationships around me when it takes over. Any tips?

Hi Connor, I loved the video and the way you dealt with this topic so compassionately. I have a question about regrets about things you can’t undo, or will not get the chance to do again. My regret part is constantly reminding me of opportunities I missed out on and actions that I took that didn’t turn out well and what I could’ve done instead. The problem is that I can’t go back in time and redo those things. How do I approach it if I feel that it is pointless to continue to be reminded of things I cannot change. I’ve tried saying, “that’s not helpful, it’s hurtful. “ but o feel that it isn’t showing the 8 Cs. Thanks for your help! Anyone else who wants to chime in, you’re welcome to do that. Thanks!

I have physical symptoms related to that trauma … I tried therapy and talked my ass off about it but never got better !! Hope IFS will help ❤😂

Thank you for this. My censor part is currently really cracking down, and I end up deleting comments because I also have AuDHD and struggle to be concise, then experience a lot of shame - but there is one thing I would like to share, because it helped me so much and may be the missing piece (excuse the non-deliberate pun...another element of the neurodivergence, my mind trips over itself! Piece, peace...) for someone else - so I can't not! 'Peace' was very difficult for me to grasp, I think partly due to its total absence in my development (I have Dissociative Identity Disorder due to the severity of the abuse in my childhood, and am so grateful to IFS for depathologising the experience of having parts). However, I once read peace described as 'nothing lacking, nothing wrong' by the teacher Tara Brach (she may have been quoting Nisargadatta) and I thought 'OH! It's THAT??' What I, especially my scared parts, long for most in the world...OK-ness. Nothing wrong. I've never seen peace the same way since then... 🙏

I've been watching and sharing a lot of your content. Thank you so much for those. I'm also a coach (trained in NLP) and practicing parts work now, which I find amazingly powerful. I love how you highlight, in this video, the tendency of coaches (and the cultural cliché about coaches that comes with it) to focus on willpower and motivation rather than work with the deeper-wider psyche. Manager parts love it.. but there's such a better organic way to go about change, and, you said, it : sustainable change. Thank you for your work and generosity.

Conor, I had the most unfortunate experience with IFS. I bought the book by Jay Early read quite a bit then booked a session with someone Who supposedly had the first there levels but the first session ( only half an hour) frightened a part of me so much that I didn't/ Couldn't do anymore which after a while and many acupuncture sessions later Drive my OCD through the roof. Back on meds and slowly recovering but sometimes licking myself for my foolishness. What I think went wrong is that the therapist didn't ask for permission ....from the protector and dove in. Maybe it's a lesson to let sleeping dogs lie.. I was watching your videos and loving It all but c',est la vie.

Gonna try it for sure. I found that once I experienced self energy and knew how it felt and whereabouts in my body then I could find it so much more readily, it becomes easier with experience. I remember I had a self like part that I thought was self for a week before I experienced self and it was only after I realised that it lacked connectedness and curiosity that it wasn't self. I find it fascinating stuff to think about
