Pokemon Radical Red - ROM Hacked
So one would think that since I played through Pokemon Radical Red all the way up to the Elite 4 and Champion challenge on the absolute easiest mode possible, I'd be able to finish, at least, the main campaign, right? Right? I mean, I got all the way there, may as well.
I couldn't even get past Lorelai.
Even with a meta team I made using an infinite rare candy cheat code, I had to concede...
Maybe I am just a filthy casual (I'm sure everyone will say so in the comments) but damn, regardless of my incompetence, Radical Red is hard.
But even moreso than just being a rage-inducing difficulty hack, Radical Red is an an absolutely massive achievement in rom hacking.
It's a huge experience, with what some may even describe as having the problem of content overload. There is just so much in Radical Red, it's no wonder it's the most popular Pokemon ROM Hack.
But is it actually fun? Even for players like me who want a more casual experience, let's find out.
--
Yes, Radical Red, specifically the version I played for this video, version 4.1 was developed by Soupercell, with help from others and of course, the Complete Fire Red Upgrade.
But even since it's first completed version, Radical Red has been iconic, taking the original Pokemon FireRed and injecting it with the most powerful steroids known to man.
Radical Red, as stated before, is a difficulty hack, sure. Intended to create many levels of high level competitive gameplay in the shell of the GBA Kanto region classic.
But alongside that, there is just so much more.
You ready? Cause this is gonna get insane.
Pokemon from generations 1-9,
Custom, original versions of Pokemon
Fairy Typing,
The physical-special split,
Mega Evolution
Z moves,
Dynamaxing and Raid Battles,
Re-usable TMs and a much improved HM system with shortened animations,
Updated TMs, including moves from generations 1-9,
Almost every important battle item
Updated sprites
Hidden abilities,
EV training gear,
Options to streamline IV and EV training,
Dexnav,
a day and night system,
ability pop-ups in battle,
new move tutors all over the place,
the ability for Pokemon to follow behind you on the overworld,
faster speeds in just about every area you could think of,
field effects,
brand new, original abilities,
Battle style forced to SET, (unless you really wanna keep it as shift)
Boss fights don't allow access to the bag
New buffs for previously less useful Pokemon,
Additional rivals,
Additional story missions,
Additional recurring enemy bosses,
Level caps,
Many available new roaming legendary Pokemon to capture,
an upgraded game corner,
Generation 8 EXP share,
Nature changers in every Pokemon center,
And so many more quality of life improvements as well as notches to overall difficulty.
My God, it's just humongous.
Now as much as I appreciate all these wonderful features, even on the easiest difficulties, Pokeplebians like myself are still gonna be challenged, and the game warns you of that too, saying that it will never be as easy as a vanilla Pokemon playthrough.
So if that's a deal breaker for ya... maybe look elsewhere.
However, even despite that, I still have to say I had a wondrous time with the game.

Which is the Best (Official) Way to Play Super Mario Bros. 2?

Super Mario Bros 2 might not the fan favourite or most fondly remembered of the original Mario Nintendo Entertainment System platformer trilogy, but it is still a pretty fun and worthwhile game to play, despite how brazenly strange it is. Normally I find that Pokemon fan games and ROM hacks that try to do a lot just might fumble a bit, at least on a thing or two. And who can blame them? GBA version is definitely the definitive one gameplay wise. You literally won't be missing anything by just playing that one instead of the NES or SNES versions in terms of content, but the same isn't true in reverse. NES and SNES are missing the A coins and Yoshi eggs. Honestly though, this is what any remake should strive for, shouldn't it? If it's not aiming to be the definitive version, then what's the point of it existing, lol. SNES was the previous definitive version, due to the fact that you could actually save the game, instead of having to finish it in one sitting like on NES, or leave the console on all night. Now we need a new definitive edition, one that has all the GBA improvements and content, but with higher resolution graphics fit for our modern HD screens, and a higher quality soundtrack :).

    • @anotherblowncartridge
      @anotherblowncartridge 6 днів тому

@@anotherblowncartridge Each one certainly has historical value =). I doubt most people are gonna play through the game more than once though, since everyone's got a big backlog of games to get through, haha. Due to this, I try to direct people to the most feature complete content rich and polished versions of any game that offer the same content and core gameplay. For example, when it comes to Pokemon, I send friends who want to play Kanto the first time straight to Pokemon FireRed. There's nothing they'll be missing content-wise compared to Red, since all the same maps and puzzles are present, and they can see all the new content in one single playthrough of Kanto. Also the quality of life improvements just make it a no-brainer; the categorized inventory bag alone is a big improvement xD

    • @anotherblowncartridge
      @anotherblowncartridge 6 днів тому

"Which is the Best (Official) Way to Play Super Mario Bros. 2?", simple, ANY way and version is the best way to (this answer of mine also goes for Super Mario Bros. 3, ANY video game). I love me the classic Famicom and NES versions, but the SNES and GBA ports are ALSO amazing! But heck, I also dig the "first version / skin" of the game which was Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic (as long as people learn of, or know that, it DID start development as a "Mario game", as a prototype before being shelved and the japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 aka The Lost Levels was made instead, and later was finished and turned into Doki Doki Panic when Fuji Television wanted a game for the whole Yume Kojo stuff... seriously, research the game's history, I'm not just making this up, GTV Japan did a good, or some good, videos about it), even though to see the true ending of that version requires beating the game with all 4 characters. I actually did it with the first selectable character, I can't remember his name, Imajin? About a month ago or so. I had gotten going again with the "mama" character, but then I left off, and now / these days I'm bouncing between Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link, and Skyrim.

I was a little disappointed you focused on graphics and sound so much; you could have pointed out gameplay changes like adding those 7s to the slot machine or letting you choose your character again after deaths rather than being locked into your first choice until you either beat the level or run out of lives. I actually feel that breaks the flow of the game a little, as it seemed more like the kind of game where you remember how it was to make smarter choices on full replays rather than the modern long game you just bumble through once and then forget about. Though of course, if there's no saving, then they can have limited continues as the ultimate punishment... A lot of the pointless additions on Advance seem to be there just to show off the new GBA's ability to rotate and scale sprites, and it always looked a little ugly to me to do that scaling in the same low resolution that the original graphics were in. Why did the shells have to be scaled up? They don't change size, so they could have just been drawn at that larger size to begin with! And the proliferation of hearts may have been to make up for starting the characters off small, which along with the score system was probably done just to make it more like other Mario games... But this isn't other Mario games! This used to be the GOOD Mario game! And don't act like the second Mouser is a good penultimate boss in a game that used to have 3 Mousers and 2 Triclydes!

    • @anotherblowncartridge
      @anotherblowncartridge 11 днів тому

I definitely agree that I could have covered more. Can't remember my exact teams but the last one I remember using in ORAS was in 2016 when Wolfe Glick won worlds. I was also on the Mega Gengar with Primal Kyogre and Mega Rayquaza mind set. Perish Trap when I played was Mega Gengar, Gothitelle, Politoed, Machamp, Arcanine and and I think Hydreigon 🤔 I still play everything with a competitive mind set. I follow the meta with the chance I might get in again but having a kid kinda ended that. I do help my buddy at work practice though so there is that.

Why do you assume birdo is a female just because birdo has a feminine voice, maybe a feminine voice and bow on the head are both signs of masculinity in the birdo species

I'm just saying it would be called that. The new Zelda game that actually has the player character being Zelda was called "woke". Not to mention the new Princess Peach game was called "woke", too. People are just way unnecessarily hypersensitive to female protagonists these days.

    • @mediatransmission

The fear around this so-called "wokeism" is very real. People think that seeing a female protagonist in a story these days means that men are now second-class citizens 😂

@@anotherblowncartridge Well I would suggest whatever twitter bubble you're in is inflating the one-off opinions of morons and making them look like a widespread thing. We've had female video game protagonists pretty much since video games were a thing (Samus was in 86' and there were plenty more before her), nobody has ever had a problem with female video game protagonists. Edit: I guess my overall point is, if you want a good way to completely tank your channel, making it political is a good way to go about it. Not only do you piss off the people you're trying to dunk on, you also piss off the rest of us who are exhausted by the 24/7 culture wars stuff.

    • @anotherblowncartridge

@@BenWillock I didn't think a one-off quick comment like that would bother people so much. Regardless if the people are morons, it is a widespread thing. This is a new age of brain rot social media politics. That recent Nintendo Direct Livestream comment section, and the comment sections on the Princess Peach: Showtime and Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom videos prove it's much bigger than people would like to admit. I didn't think a quick joke about it would be a big deal, nor do I think it would "tank" my channel. But I appreciate your concerns and comments nonetheless. I'll keep making videos the way I like, and I'll face whatever consequences come from it. I wasn't intending to "dunk on" anyone. Just trying to be a little playful. Apologies.
