Which is the Best (Official) Way to Play Super Mario Bros. 2?

  • Super Mario Bros 2 might not the fan favourite or most fondly remembered of the original Mario Nintendo Entertainment System platformer trilogy, but it is still a pretty fun and worthwhile game to play, despite how brazenly strange it is.
It's still beloved, don't get me wrong, but it's more slippery nature and cryptic puzzle levels don't have it sitting as high in terms of nostalgia the same way the original Super Mario Bros or Mario 3 do.
But hey, it's the first appearance of Shy Guy and a few other franchise staples, so I'm a fan.
Before this point, I had never played through Super Mario Bros. 2 to completion, and now I've done it three times.
There's the original on NES from 1988, based on the Japanese 1987 game, Yume Kojo: Doko Doki Panic, which was, by the way, kind of based on the Super Mario 2D platforming engine, just more focused on vertical design rather than just horizontal, left-to-right movement.
I played this via the Switch Online NES games emulator, where most people who want to play the game legally would play it as of time of recording, though it's around in original cartridge form on various online used storefronts for reasonable prices. If that's the route you wanna go.
And by the way, I'm obviously not talking about the 1986 Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, which is better known in the west as Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels. I will eventually play through that game... but I gotta work my way up to that.
There's a reason Nintendo thought us westerners couldn't handle it until Super Mario All Stars came out.
Speaking of which, the next way to play it is via Super Mario All Stars, where it got effectively remade for the 16-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993.
This one is, of course, playable on the Nintendo Switch Online SNES emulator. You might also find the original cartridge goes a little more expensive than the original Super Mario Bros. 2 cartridge on websites like eBay.
All Stars also got re-released for the Wii, so that option could work for you if you're looking for a used physical edition of the game, and don't have a SNES laying around.
Finally, we have Super Mario Advance on Game Boy Advance from 2001, which, in my opinion, remains the most robust and modernized official version of the game... but it's not necessarily my personal pick for the best.
This one is also most readily available through the Switch Online GBA emulator software, though it's locked behind the Expansion Pack pay wall.
Finding used versions of the GBA cartridge though is by far the easiest and cheapest, so if you want to play it on original hardware, this would be your best bet, in my opinion.
And truth be told, to me, this is the best version, though it has it's caveats.

Also, I may be one of the... few? very few? that has conquered the original Super Mario Bros. 2 (The Lost Levels), without cheating (save states, rewinding, or any cheat codes like with a Game Genie or any other cheating device). Not to be bragging or anything exactly, but, if I can do it, then ANYONE can. It did take me quite a while, but I just kept at it and was persistent, and yes, "practice makes perfect" as my mom always would tell me.

"Which is the Best (Official) Way to Play Super Mario Bros. 2?", simple, ANY way and version is the best way to (this answer of mine also goes for Super Mario Bros. 3, ANY video game). I love me the classic Famicom and NES versions, but the SNES and GBA ports are ALSO amazing! But heck, I also dig the "first version / skin" of the game which was Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic (as long as people learn of, or know that, it DID start development as a "Mario game", as a prototype before being shelved and the japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 aka The Lost Levels was made instead, and later was finished and turned into Doki Doki Panic when Fuji Television wanted a game for the whole Yume Kojo stuff... seriously, research the game's history, I'm not just making this up, GTV Japan did a good, or some good, videos about it), even though to see the true ending of that version requires beating the game with all 4 characters. I actually did it with the first selectable character, I can't remember his name, Imajin? About a month ago or so. I had gotten going again with the "mama" character, but then I left off, and now / these days I'm bouncing between Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link, and Skyrim.

GBA version is definitely the definitive one gameplay wise. You literally won't be missing anything by just playing that one instead of the NES or SNES versions in terms of content, but the same isn't true in reverse. NES and SNES are missing the A coins and Yoshi eggs. Honestly though, this is what any remake should strive for, shouldn't it? If it's not aiming to be the definitive version, then what's the point of it existing, lol. SNES was the previous definitive version, due to the fact that you could actually save the game, instead of having to finish it in one sitting like on NES, or leave the console on all night. Now we need a new definitive edition, one that has all the GBA improvements and content, but with higher resolution graphics fit for our modern HD screens, and a higher quality soundtrack :).

@@anotherblowncartridge Each one certainly has historical value =). I doubt most people are gonna play through the game more than once though, since everyone's got a big backlog of games to get through, haha. Due to this, I try to direct people to the most feature complete content rich and polished versions of any game that offer the same content and core gameplay. For example, when it comes to Pokemon, I send friends who want to play Kanto the first time straight to Pokemon FireRed. There's nothing they'll be missing content-wise compared to Red, since all the same maps and puzzles are present, and they can see all the new content in one single playthrough of Kanto. Also the quality of life improvements just make it a no-brainer; the categorized inventory bag alone is a big improvement xD

I was a little disappointed you focused on graphics and sound so much; you could have pointed out gameplay changes like adding those 7s to the slot machine or letting you choose your character again after deaths rather than being locked into your first choice until you either beat the level or run out of lives. I actually feel that breaks the flow of the game a little, as it seemed more like the kind of game where you remember how it was to make smarter choices on full replays rather than the modern long game you just bumble through once and then forget about. Though of course, if there's no saving, then they can have limited continues as the ultimate punishment...
A lot of the pointless additions on Advance seem to be there just to show off the new GBA's ability to rotate and scale sprites, and it always looked a little ugly to me to do that scaling in the same low resolution that the original graphics were in. Why did the shells have to be scaled up? They don't change size, so they could have just been drawn at that larger size to begin with! And the proliferation of hearts may have been to make up for starting the characters off small, which along with the score system was probably done just to make it more like other Mario games... But this isn't other Mario games! This used to be the GOOD Mario game! And don't act like the second Mouser is a good penultimate boss in a game that used to have 3 Mousers and 2 Triclydes!

    • @anotherblowncartridge
      @anotherblowncartridge  6 днів тому +2

I definitely agree that I could have covered more. Advance 1 definitely does have those ugly sprite rotating and scaling effects, but I do feel like sometimes, especially when it's a smoother animation, it can look nice.
Thank you for your comment! I always appreciate extensive thoughts and feedback! 🙂
