Why Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Remains Unique

  • You ever notice how we've never played another Mario Kart with two players on one kart?
It's just so weird that we've never got a “double dash” mode in any subsequent release.
Maybe it was because the Gamecube didn't have hardware gimmicks that could influence the direction of the game, so developers were forced to create a new gameplay mechanic to shake things up.
Truth be told- yes, the two racers on one kart mechanic doesn't do that much for the gameplay, but it does add small layers of driving strategy.
Choosing what characters you pick and what kart you drive does obviously have impacts; there's weight, speed, and special items to consider.
And beyond that, it allows for two-player co-op to happen on one kart, with one player driving and the other throwing hazards at other drivers.
All switchable by the quick unison press of the Z button.
Even though this mechanic doesn't ultimately add that much, it's still pretty fun nonetheless, and makes it more exciting to return to Double Dash over other previous MarioKarts.
Gamecube era Nintendo was truly something else.

Honestly this has always been my fav mario kart. Maybe I’m a bit biased bc it’s the one I grew up with, but it’s always had the most personality to me. From the unique voice clips (that have personality. It’s not only just the basic “MARIO” But also stuff like “Spread the beans” or baby Luigi’s “uh oh, baby weegee time!” Or the iconic “HI IM DAISY”), the bright colors, the banger music (that you’re right in saying doesn’t sound like any other Mario kart’s music) there’s so much distinctness packed into this game. Even if the double dash feature wasn’t a thing, this MK would still be my favorite solely from identity. Playing it recently the controls haven’t aged the best, especially when going from MK 8 to this (it’s a bit too floaty imo ), but I still manage to have fun. It’s a great game and I wish it would get some kind of remake or remaster

Still play and make videos on this game to this day, by far my favorite Mario Kart game and 2nd favorite game in general of all time. A few years ago modding started and we've got some BANGER custom tracks for the game which keeps it alive which I'd never thought I'd ever see for this game since Wii got all the love. Even have tracks from future titles as custom tracks like Wii DK Summit, Wii Coconut Mall, DS Airship Fortress, Tour New York Minute, and 3DS Toad Circuit to name a few.

0:14 technically the hardware gimmick is that it's powerful so they loved showing off how many things they can have on screen at once
    In this case 16 racers
In Paper Mario those rooms with tons of enemies
In Pikmin, 100 Pikmin (good utilization)

Oh wow, that's really interesting! I forgot that was one if the key features they promoted the Gamecube on.

honestly i don't know why they didnt just have a mkdd mode on mk8 either. it seemslike something they could possibly add to the booster course pass but that's a big if considering that it requires alot of time to do, still a banger mk game though, ateast we're able to have the og

Agreed! It would be a great addition as part of that Booster Course pass. Here's hoping.

the only feature that I wand added to all future MK games is being able to swap items this would be such a good mechanic and would let you use the items more strategically and would stop you from throwing away a res shell while in first just to use a banana

If dual slots for items sticks around, I couldn't agree more. Really can add to driving strategy

I used to always play this game with Luigi & baby Luigi in the Luigi Kart. Added an extra layer of mystery. Are they related? Are they a result of universe hoping? What is time and space? How much Luigi is too much Luigi?

Them just being in the same time/space implies multiple expanding universes, meaning that time is not linear or static in the Mario universe.

I always used Partners in Time as my excuse for the babies inclusion, but looking back on it now I realize that Double Dash came out two years before. I wonder which game influenced the other since I wouldn’t be surprised if the concept for PoT was already on the table. Truthfully, I have no idea what the truth behind that is.

@@anotherblowncartridge I used to play this a lot cooperatively with my aunt since she preferred to handle items and the punching mechanic. Also since I brought it up, I just want to mention how the punching mechanic was so interesting with how your Player 2 could help nudge you in a direction or just directly combat other karts in the way.
