    This was such an informative and helpful video!! I feel eager to read So Late in the Day, James, and Bradshaw Variations now. Glad to see you enjoyed Circe too. I absolutely loved The Palace of Eros if you’re still in the mood for Greek myth retellings. Great writing and storytelling in that one!

    omg ur dog is so cute 😭 I haven't finished the road yet but personally I love it for its simplicity, also the "boringness" just goes to show how depraved their lives are, they're just trying to survive in this barren world, which highlights the dad-son relationship and his love for his son even more, or at least this is how I understood it (I'm only like 40% in so far) but I loved this reading vlog

    what a packed reading month!! there’s nothing better than getting through a bunch of tinies. really intrigued by the miranda darling and lauren elkin. bradshaw variations is probably gonna be one of the next cusks that i pick up, seems like it’ll be kind of in line with arlington park!!

      Miranda Darling felt closer to Arlington Park, maybe because the plot feels similar. If you’ve read In The Folds by Cusk that’s quite similar to Bradshaw.

    a week later, i've finally finished watching this vlog (and also reading the book)! really agree about the deep vein of violence in all the sections, in different guises: destructive, generative, personal, social, illuminating, etc... i have to mull a bit more -- and i've certainly not read all cusk's written -- but this may be my favorite of her books? i look forward to the cuskapalooza wrap-up video! i loved yr ferrante vid :)

    Perhaps G stands for genius? but like you say and what Cusk is showing, is that not all G's are equal; distinctly through gender. Also maybe acts of violence are more permitted/ tolerated by male G's than female G's? But then we may consider that the woman who attacks the wife in the first part of the novel is also a G? Is Cusk making any new statements on her usual preoccupations: art, motherhood and the female condition? The only thing I struggle with in her works that I've read so far, is that she doesn't quite confront her privilege or wealth or the intersections of her themes with race. It's all very bourgeois. Anyway your discussion provoked these thoughts and it was so very gratifying to listen to your insights on this book! 🌻

    • @r.enee.morris
      @r.enee.morris Місяць тому

      I think Cusk is exploring the same ideas but in slightly different form. It does feel familiar but not the exact same. Yes her privilege is alway showing and I doubt she will change at this stage. Thanks for watching!

    THE MOMENT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!!! loved these thoughts. agree very much with skipping the small talk to get to the nitty gritty details of life and conversation, the gory bits. loved seeing all this in The Diver. also, you made me realize how violence appears in each part. for some reason, i thought it was most prevalent in the first part, but with your thoughts, Cusk is tackling violence at all angles. thank you for this wonderful vlog! <3

    2:01 "something lighthearted and easy (...) but it lacked a lot of depth for me" honestly, this is how I feel about emily henry's books 😭 lighthearted and easy, sure. but god, they're written so blandly. it's not too much to expect a chicklit-y book to also have a bit of depth, right

    As someone who once wanted to be an SNL writer, I absolutely devoured Romantic Comedy, even though a lot of the “vote blue no matter who” takes annoyed me lol. I do think there has been general commentary in the states about “schlubby” SNL actors/actors in general dating women that are considerably “out of their leagues.” I do think Sittenfield reflected that discourse fairly well. But I think you were accurate to point out the main character’s insecurities. While she is confident in her work, she has very low self esteem, which can be frustrating to read. The Danny Horst rule was both meant to reflect discourse while also deflect from her own insecurities. I do wish Sittenfield had done more to allow the main character to work through her self esteem issues, though! Anyway! Thesis from a new subscriber is over lol. Totally agree that The Night Owls is an egregious name for any sort of adult programming, fictional or otherwise

    • @r.enee.morris
      @r.enee.morris Місяць тому

      Thanks for the insight. It’s helpful hearing from a US pov, as I’m sure there are things I’m not getting. I guess I find it weird in general to have such a superficial observation be the heart of a story. Also the covid stuff was weird/jarring. NZ handled it so different so reading a character driving across country for a hook up during that time was crazy to me.

    The Bee Sting has been on my tbr for a while now, I will have to get a copy, lol! I don't have a goal, but the fact that I have read 28 books so far, including school reading, is pretty impressive to me! It might be recency bias, but my favorite book, in this case novella, so far is Bloom by Delilah S. Dawson. It's a thriller with beautiful writing and a great ending. I'm fully on board with a Winter of Women™ for you! This is a very good list IMO; hope you find some edifying reads among them. I'm currently reading Megan Nolan's newer one, Ordinary Human Feelings ◡̈

      Oh I like that. 💜 Not surprising they’re all women.

    That edition of acts of desperation is criminal. I hunted down for the yellow and black one with the naked woman instead which is gorg. The book is really really good though, hope you do pick it up soon! Also, patiently waiting for your thoughts on Kairos, will def buy it if you recommend it!

      I have considered reordering it but that seems silly. TBH I’ve done it before with ugly books.

    I am reading De Cespedes' "Her side of the story" for my Italian feminist vlog theme.

    What a great selection! I have read some of these (The Forbidden Notebook is great! You did pronounce her name correctly.) and the others are also on my TBR.
