I feel like I’d never get chosen for a modeling job, not bc I’m ugly, but because I don’t have any “sexy” hobbies like tennis and I don’t wear makeup… My special talents are juggling (only 3), writing, a duck impression, and speaking German (on top of EN/JP), I wonder if any of that nerdy stuff is in demand 😅

  • @majibento

You have no idea how thankful I am for this vid! First your video 7 months ago gave me the idea to go the language school route, and in that you mentioned the English cafes too, so I was wondering about how that’s like. Now this video drops and I have my answer! Thank you again!! I decided I will be doing this job anyway when I go to a language school next year but it was good to learn more of the details. I’m an introvert (INFJ) but I like talking when I’m in good company and there’s good vibes. I was really surprised by the 90% male customers thing, I wonder if that was just your cafe… Did the customers ever buy you drinks at the cafe to hit on you? 👀 I looked into one company recently (Lanc*l) but they require 16 hours a week minimum lmao no thanks… I think I’ll be in Kita-ku or Itabashi-ku so realistically I’d likely be going to Ikebukuro to find some cafes. I wonder if you know any good ones in that area…? But yeah I’m looking forward to this job, since the benefits are getting to know Japanese people and getting teaching experience, even though I’m sure there will be times I’m tired of it 😅 My current job (programming) is super isolated and I always feel like I want to talk to others more and make a more direct impact so this’ll be a way to do that. The boss at the wedding thing is crazy, my boss would definitely fake getting sick that day and not come if I invited him. He’s the type who hates giving speeches and just wants to be left alone in his office haha And lastly, Frieren ftw!

Hi Lyssa As a long-term resident of the Tokyo area, I've attended a number of Japanese weddings, and don't believe that filling the Goshugi-bukuro needs to be quite as painful as 300$us. According to UFJ bank, the (average) going rates are 30,000¥ for friends, 2 or 3 thousand yen more for work colleagues, 35,000¥ if you are the bride or groom's boss, 37,000¥ if the bride or groom is a former student, and 58,000¥ for relatives. What you do not want to do is put in an even number of bills, as this supposedly suggests that the marriage could break up (grin). In return for showing up and paying up, guests will generally receive a gift of some kind. Especially if a wedding is attended by former classmates, or the bride and / or groom were members of a club or activity group, there will most likely be a nijikai, an opportunity for y'all to let yer hair down (lol). BTW, have been enjoying your videos with Seerasan, plus your sense of humor - will subscribe. Hope that you will go back to Fuji Goko in early November, when the leaves turn gold and scarlet, and the flavors of autumn become compelling.

I was a salaryman but then left (also early like your example😊) to teach English at Nova Namba. We taught up to 3 person classes , all ages but equal level. but one hour each day was in the "voice" room. It was just free conversation. As it was in a business setting far less of the personal talk. I enjoyed this but yes sometimes difficult due to varying levels. Sometimes the best way to get the students engaged was to say something a little crazy. Once it was kinda quiet so we started talking about Japanese vending machines and later they were asking about guns in USA. This was 1994. Well I said yes we had fun vending machines and you just put in a credit card. Well this got them all asking questions in English until I eventually told them it was a joke but look at how much you spoke English 😮😊 But I found these subject engaged people more. I went to university of Florida and 8 would show them pictures of the stadium and ask how many people do you think are at this game. They would say 30 or 40 thousand. I said 90k. All of a sudden there were all these questions in English and we were at class but having a real conversation. Those were the best days.

This sounds like it might be fun for an older guy. Though if 90% of the clients are men, they may not want to hire someone that the clients might see as more like their father. I have read that there are businesses you can hire that will handle quitting your job for you! So that the abusive HR chat your client had would have been handled by someone from the business you hired.

I had it in my head that this would be a fun job, but I also would assume a guy as a chat host is probably in far lower demand compared to a woman. When you got to the "ugly" section, that was confirmed to me haha. Or maybe I'm interpreting the data incorrectly: perhaps the abundance of female chat hosts are a sign of the heightened demand, yet low supply, of male chat hosts? 🤔🤷 Still, with the customers mainly being male, I doubt they are inclined to choose to talk to me, a balding middle-aged man, over a woman with fair eyes, fair skin, and blonde hair. 😂 The mainly female employee demographic was probably created due to the mostly male customer base.

Cool video, I didn't even know that that was a thing. Quick Austrailan accent tip: instead of saying yes, say year a bit slower than normal. Edit: Crud. I'm English, so I don't pronounce r that much. I just had the thought that, as an American you probably do, so it may not work so well for you.

Speaking to anyone for three hours straight does seem like a lot...even if there are multiple people. I lived in Japan in 2005-2007 and attended a Christian church in Ome. I still listen to the sermons on UA-cam and they've mentioned volunteer opportunities to do English Cafe's. If I was still there, I'd probably try it.😊 Thanks for sharing your experience. 🌸

Wow. I'd never heard of chat hosting before. It sounds fascinating. As an introvert, I think I'd enjoy the thrill of it for like one shift, then it would get too stressful. I've never met my current boss. My office is 100% telecommute, and my boss lives and works in a different state. I'm sure they would have good things to say at my wedding, but it would be weird.

The best bathroom in Shibuya is next to a bookstore next to the United Nations University. There is a bookstore on the right side of the United Nations University. And by right I mean your right when you are facing the university. You have to walk along a street and then go downstairs. The bathroom is always clean, with the best air-conditioner and is always empty. Right in front of the bookstore there are some tables and chairs that anybody can use. I always stop there to drink some juices. That is the place to relax and rest a little in Shibuya.

@@asiaredmond2559 Basically I didn’t really “bring” any of my money over. I kept my American bank accounts and American credit cards (which work perfectly fine over here, and can be used to withdraw yen from an atm!) and opened a Japanese bank account where I started to deposit money I earned in Japan into. If you really want to transfer your money over you can make a wire transfer from your home countries bank into a Japanese bank account once you open one!
