Hi Everyone, In this video I'm replacing the old halogen bulbs in the R1150GS headlight with new LED lights. It's a pretty good upgrade, but as I mentioned at the end of the video, Make sure you adjust the headlight as not to blind oncoming traffic and make sure it's a legal modification in your area. The most import part, one should always use an oily rag and keep those chromed "stand röhren" always moist. My original R1100RS has some minor pitting under the triple tree. i got a R1150 front fork witch is 10 years younger. the original ball joints are expensive and you can't buy the tools to loosen these, you have to remove the upper frame under the tank and take it to the dealer. the same for the bridge between the front suspension "holms" where the telelever rests.

    Love the conversion, the original light is shocking! Did the bike pass the MOT okay?

    • @garage_tales
      @garage_tales 2 дні тому

      Hey there. Thank you for your comment! Yes, the original lights aren’t great unfortunately. Regarding the MOT, I didn’t have any issues yet (I’ve done this on quite a few bikes), but you might have to aim the beam a bit lower. Testers seem to be a bit funny about led’s on cars, but not on bikes.

    Nope, all bolts seized completely solid. Welding nuts onto them has achieved nothing, I'm just using heat, oil, a long lever, carefully rocking them back and forth and in the end they all break off. Drilling them out it is.

    how to remove excess oil from the BMW R 1100 GS engine

    • @garage_tales

      Easiest way is with an oil extractor and a thin tube. Otherwise you might have to use the drain plug. You could try and lean the bike all the way on it’s side and get some out the fill plug, but that could get messy.

      @@gunnar9702 Yes, I found a later 955i Sprint RS that I took the throttle bodies, injectors, fuel rain, wiring loom, ecu, dashboard and switchgear. So it should be all there. So we’ll see how smoothly it goes. My carbs where replaced, I believe they came off a daytona originally. But someone also tried to do some modifications to them + they where a bit worn, so I never got them running as good as it should and mpg was always poor. So rather than spending money on new carbs, I decided to give efi a try.

    This channel is criminally undersubscribed. Another great video. One comment for your viewers, if I may - those 'one size fits all' seal drivers are one of the worst tools I've ever bought, far too flimsy for the job and those little legs do not apply even pressure to the seal. Trashed a pair of seals before I bit the bullet and just bought the correct sized driver for whatever bike I was working on.

    Buy a quality battery tester and make sure your battery is in decent condition before you try and start these engines. Weak batteries trash the sprag clutches on these machines you have to split the crankcase to replace them. Nice to see you giving it a going over before starting though, there are many on here that dont.

    • @garage_tales
      @garage_tales Місяць тому

      Hey there. Thanks for your comment. The older “steamers” suffered with poor sprag clutches, but they have improved them later and also they changed the design so you no longer have to split the crankcases to get them out 🙂 Still, it’s a fair point…better be safe. I’m back… job done. Thanks for the help. One thing - pretty significant - is that I believe the air gap should be measured with the springs OUT. I fully emptied the forks of all oil and put the 586 cc’s in. If Triumph is specc’ing an air gap they are going to spec a corresponding volume of oil. Sure enough, bang on 78mm with no spring.Also the Haynes manual shows someone measuring the oil height with a wide metal ruler that won’t fit with the spring in. The significance is that with the spring in, the air gap is going to be 30mm or so too low, which will definitely affect handling. I’ve ridden the bike since and it feels right - maybe even a little soft compared to the original oil which I understand was closer to 10 WT (I went with the 5 like you used). Cheers!

      Filters vary. From memory 8mm for the drain plug and 76mm oil filter with 12 notches.

    Hi, I had this exact issue with the ambient air temperature sensor. Was stalling on start up. On motoscan app, the sensor was reading 95C. Disconnecting the sensor, the ECU doesn’t receive a signal and defaults to 10.5C, which is much better than 95C. Bike runs fine without sensor, until new sensor arrives. Thanks to your video, the air temp sensor was first thing I checked, so you saved me a lot of time. Thanks

    What a fantastic video. I have a '99 Speed Triple here in San Diego and I'm going to give this a try. Considering my bike is so old, with 31k miles, I figured I would also replace those metal bushings. Do those just pop on and off? Perhaps this is unnecessary? I'm used to these being replaced regularly on dirt bikes, perhaps not so important on a street bike?

      Hi there. Thanks for your kind comment. Appreciate it 🙂 I think most “pros” will recommend to replace them now, but I’ve had bikes with a lot more miles and they seemed fine to me. I guess the recommendation would be to replace them, but it’s up to you. You can have a look and see how worn the look 🙂 And yes, you just split them a bit so you can slide them over the shoulder on the fork.

      Hey there. Thanks for your comment and glad the video was helpful. Do you mean the bolts holding the suspension linkage together? I believe they are M12 fine pitch thread.

      The best you can get of course. A can fron Lidl for less than £4. It lasts pretty well and it’s quite though. I just painted 2 more vices with the same paint from Lidl.

    Great video.I am servicing my front brake master cylinder on my f650gs but the question is which seal do you replace on the piston as the rebuild kit only provides one seal an there are two.Many thanks

    • @garage_tales
      @garage_tales 2 місяці тому

      Hi there. I’m not sure there are 2 seals on the master cylinder. There’s the main seal and the bellow that protects the cylinder from the elements. Both should be included in a rebuilt kit.

    • @jamesgale1221
      @jamesgale1221 2 місяці тому

      Thankyou for the reply.Just one more question please is the seal the first one the piston or the second one.Also the rebuild kit only provides the seal,plunger and spring and the rubber cover for the f650gs.Thanks again. James

      @garage_tales 2 місяці тому

      @@jamesgale1221 Hi James. Some bikes have 2 seals on the front master cylinder, but I believe the F650gs has only one going on the tip of it. If you bought a decent rebuild kit, it should have a diagram on how it goes together, or you can look at the old one and put it back together the same way :)
