The Impresarios - Jack Hylton - Part 1
Michael Craig tells the story of Jack Hylton (Part 1) in the series The Impresarios. BBC Radio 2
27th December 1978. First broadcast in 1975.
"In those days he was a bit shy really, so I said to him, stand up and conduct the band like Whiteman does." (CHAPPIE D'AMATO)
"Jack Hylton made more money out of Arthur Askey than Arthur Askey did - that sounds a cruel thing to say, but Jack was a great man, he had tremendous flair." (ARTHUR ASKEY)
"Jack Hylton gave me a contract, paid me £6 a week. fixed me up with a matron who used to look after me, and gave me my name. He was like a second father to me.' (ERNIE WISE)
with the voices of Chappie D'Amato, Arthur Askey, Paul Fenoulhet, Jack Hylton, June Malo, and Ernie Wise.

Aah Hubert! Happy memories of listening to his Radio Two show while growing up in the 60s and 70s, hearing those timeless songs and learning about how to write one, or at least try! Rest in peace sir, Stu X

What an interesting programme. It’s great hearing her story in her own words. In the 60’s when I was a very young child, I lived in Denham, Bucks. For a short period Jessie Matthews moved in next door to us, with her sister. I only have vague memories but I know my mother always followed her career and read the biographies. I must do the same. Thanks for posting.

I remember he died the same week as Alistair Cooke (Letter From America) - and that was another programme that I used to listen to. Brings back memories and really nice to listen to how Radio 2 used to be. Shame we don't have anything like this today. Other than these resurrected repeats. Still, that's better than nothing. Please keep it up.

I'm really enjoying your Bowlly series! Love all the music of that era and Al is great at it. And what a colourful character he was! Clever, how you matched so many songs to his antics. I also notice parallels between him and dancer/actor George Raft (1895- 1980) in personality and life experiences. But such a tragedy to have lost Bowlly so early... Thanks for your presentations!

marvellous, i seem to recall the idiots at radio 2 sacking malcolm in a callous manner as they would sack nigel ogden and frank renton later on, i used to love radio 2 especially on sunday night, i would never listen to it now as it's complete rubbish and i boycott the BBC anyway, i dread to think what kind of dross they have on sunday night now
