How to listen to Tool, in my opinion of course...Let the bass and drums root you down while the guitar and vocals flows through and around you. Like the mountain is the bass and drums and the winds and clouds that pass by are the vocals and guitar. Stay firmly rooted in the bass and enjoy! Forget trying to find 'One' or keep up w/ Time signatures, it's simply not intended to be consumed like that.

Their videos are artistic in their own right , but they have literally nothing to do with the lyrics or the song. You'll watch a video and feel like you were just tripping balls. Never listen to a tool song and try to decipher the lyrics while trying to decipher the video. Your brain will explode. Love your comments on the song though.

Don’t watch the vids. No offense to Adam Jones, but they’re just a distraction. Close your eyes and listen. As for time signatures, it’s rarely just one, they often change times as the song goes along.

Their visual videos have no actual meaning that relates to the song or lyrics.

I never recommend watching the videos, especially for your first listen. lol

I'd suggest the actual track to listen to, this video has a weird pop can reverb thing going on. but yeah, time to envelop yourself and go head first.

5/4 for the most part in this song. I think the chorus is a different key signature. (12/8 followed by 5/4?) The 5/4 in this song is probably their most jaring song using odd time. The riffs are very 4/4 with an added (unrelated but consistent) tag at the end which makes it super jaring. Which could be seen as someone attaching themselves to a situation they shouldn't. Maybe too deep maybe not, up to you. Although Jambi is my vote for the hardest time signature to follow. Pneuma is probably the hardest for a first time listen but Jambi stays difficult imo. The ways they mess with 9/8 is absurd.

Vicarious starts in 5/4 meter, and is mostly is 5/4 although there are a couple of sections where they jump around between 6/4, 5/4, 6/8, 4/4, 6/8, 4/4, 6/8, and back to 5/4.

There music videos definitely distract from the songs

Maybe everything except key signature. A vast majority of their songs are in D. Some C, some A, but mostly D (minor).

Don’t do official vids your first listen, too distracting from the actual song and lyrics! I love this song, it’s definitely pointing out the darker more primitive side of human nature.

You've got a lot going on here. To attempt to take in not only the structure of the music itself and dissect it, but to also watch the video AND listen and try to interpret the lyrics?! That's bonkers but I admire the attempt. You might want to try to pick one or two of these to make a Tool reaction video in future. As a music nerd I would imagine that this aspect of your reaction would take precedence. So with that, you may want to go with either watching a lyric video as you analyze the music as you're listening OR watch the video as you're listening with out having the lyrics visible...or whatever combo suits you. My opinion of course. You can also be a glutton for punishment and keep reacting to Tool like you did in this video. ;) For most videos, particularly with Tool the vids aren't going to match with what the song is about. And watching the vids outside of reacting to them is an option as well especially if you are a Tool fan and you like their artistic aesthetic. Some do and some don't. They can be esoteric.

Love this! Try doing a reaction withOUT the official video. While they're extremely intricate and engaging, to your point, they can be distracting... especially to a first time listener. I would rec finding a lyric video though so as not to miss any bit of the masterpieces MJK delivers. As for next up, my vote would be for Parabola (the one you moused over at the end)... just make sure it contains Parabol as the "intro"... technically, they're two separate songs, but should be experienced together (with NO break in between!).

The videos are a whole different set of work. What you feel is what they want you to feel. Confused and vulnerable, that is the state in which truth may enter. You are on the right track... there is no wrong way to experience this art.
