NGL. Its hard to not feel like some unseen hand is holding BYU under the water hoping we drown.
A smart athlete would follow the money
Stop comparing these kids to LeBron James
Money that’s it 😂
BYU sucks. Church money, Ryan Smith, everyone sucks.
Question is. Is the community like Hurricane Utah ready for this? Will be interesting to watch!
They act like the NBA is hard to get In now??? 😂 SMH
BYU gonna be west coast Duke
This aged well 😎
The only ranked team they played when they gamed the NCAA National Championship was Pitt who was ranked preseason but finished 3-7-1. Not even in their bowl game did they play a ranked team. The Holiday Bowl vs an unranked 6-6 Michigan won a title. They played the whole season and after it was done they were rewarded for avoiding any and all competition. Their opponents combined record was 55-79-3. Only four opponents had winning records (UT, HI, AF & Tulsa).
I watched an interview with AJ and his Dad. He could have made more at some other schools, but the BYU coach has coached in the NBA, and they thought that would better prepare him for the next level. BYU is not a party school and his Dad thought this would help him stay focused on basketball. See, not all about the money. $7 million is nothing compared to what his NBA salary will be.
One and done practically makes this choice irrelevant. The environment is good though. Fresh air at altitude without humidity is good for the soul. No gangstas trying to get in your circle is good too.
Great analysis!
i vividly remember watching that Coastal Carolina game and it still haunts me to this day
Mormon church money
Yeah the BYU coach has NBA coaching experience so he offers good NIL money and recruits guys and tells them that he will get them to the nba and knows how to get them to the league and be better. So this is why they land good recruits
BYU = basketball monastery
Awesome video - great analysis!
We’re so stoked to have him
heck yeah
I wonder if he knows Mormons believe he's black because he picked the wrong side in heaven. It's fascinating when black athletes pick BYU the Mormons have never said they got any of their racist doctrine wrong. They changed a few words but still view black skin as a punishment or marker of doing something wrong. Makes me sick BYU is considered an NCAA school they need to change, apologize or go away in my opinion. Big 12 makes me sick for inviting them in. It's a cult school teaching gender inequality as well as women need a priesthood holding husband to teach the highest level in heaven called the celestial Kingdom. Men can have multiple wives in heaven but women can only be sealed to one husband that is the definition of inequality 😂 and here we are BYU picked up a #1 recruit.
College big money payouts will ruin the college game, I’m already checking out of watching games. This world has gone nuts.
Thanks for the video! Very well done!
Great information Thanks
God you're late to the game! Once he declared all ANYONE talked about was the NIL deal he made.
No one is talking about it? Where have you been? Lol. They're all talking about it. So what? Is it some mystery you think? 😂😂
I will never get enough of watching Screamin’ A suck on a lemon when AJ declared BYU as his choice.
Kansas State is rumored to offer the most as well. Most others were in the same ballpark.
One and done! Just wasted 7 million.
Why do you say that? If AJ lives up to the potential he is showing and then touts BYU and coach Young for helping him develop, then future blue-chip recruits would see BYU as a much more likely choice. This $7M might lay the foundation for future success.
Do you understand the concept of an investment?!?

What a thoughtful piece. I feel smarter now. Most other coverage of this makes me feel dumber (Dan Patrick, for one haha).
BYU has about 15 billionaire alumni donors.
Duhhhh they're a private university legit
BYU’s alumni base is insanely rich and passionate about their alma mater. If this next season goes well, it might just open the flood gates
The perfect example of understanding the concept of taking what you have to work with and playing to your strengths. BRILLIANT!
That was excellent. Instant follow.
All the Big schools basketball programs have dope cash! So stating the obvious and 11:26 guessing and assuming why he chose BYU is kinda weak.
Durant was coached up by Kevin Young, the rest is history
Nice job on the video! Will be a fascinating year for BYU and AJ.
Of course NIL was a factor, that’s the name of the game now. But all four of AJ’s final four choices offered the same money, so your real story should be why did AJ choose the Y over the others?
It was never confirmed they all offered the same money. They all offered a “minimum” whatever that means
Good point John, I’ve wondered the same thing myself. I’m just trusting the sources I’ve read that Kansas, Bama and NC were all offering the same $7M nil. I’d be interested in any reliable sources with specifics about what the others offered, but I’d imagine that might be pretty hard to pin down. I’m interested if you can find any numbers. Thanks!
Hell naw the others colleges offered 7 million! LMAO That's some if the teams in his top 5 total NIL $ for the whole team not one player!!
Clean Culture and SUPERIOR COACHING
@@John-ne4fqHe said that they all offered the same amount
Any BYU fan that doesn't think the $7M is why he chose BYU, is foolish to think that! He chose BYU because of the $7M. Question is, would Dybanta have chosen BYU without the NIL $7M?
Here’s the reason why that’s wrong. He was offered more by Kansas
Why do we have to read clueless posts like this from people who know nothing about the situation but are always on here posting??
BYU is a Mormon school. Students commit to no alcohol or drugs, no premarital sex along with certain grooming standards related to hair length etc. It is also academically excellent. But if you want to focus on BB without frat parties and drunk groupies throwing themselves at you, BYU is the place to go. Clearly the money is the ultimate clincher. But I think BYU may end up attracting good talent from parents who appreciate the environment of BYU. BYU is not for everyone. Students who go there are usually serious about their religion and would avoid alcohol/drugs/sex regardless of where they went to school.
@@JT-uu5we .... it was actually a lot less than 7 million and closer to half that amount but the first thing you should realize is that EVERY SCHOOL competing for someone are going to be in the same ballpark money wise or they wouldn't even be part of the competition, especially if money were as important as you think it is. He already has a shoe deal and a deal with Red Bull and he's going to make an Untold amount in the NBA so any amount of money offered by a school will be inconsequential.
If that’s what you think, you didn’t watch AJ’s interview that included his parents. I’m not saying NIL money wasn’t a factor, but it was the LOWEST priority to him. NBA connections #1 priority. School with ZERO party distractions #2 priority. NIL was down last priority.
Grab the cash while you can. Nothing is guaranteed in life. Now that doesn't mean you should base 100% of decisions on the top dollar option... when there's options you need to factor in a variety of things, but ultimately getting paid life-changing money sooner is a smart thing to do and is the decision rational people make 95% of the time
These are 17, 18yo kids. Of COURSE every decision the make will be how they can get more money.
Great job with this, Weston.
ngl it was satisfying to see Utah lose to Prolific Prep this year. Ace seems to be living vicariously through AJ. AJ will be an NBA star regardless but his father + NIL has turned his HS experience into a cash grab, which seems unnecessary because, barring career ending injury, AJ will be making his family millions of dollars in no time. I was in the locker room with Prolific last year and AJ seemed to love his teammates and coaches. I know this is a pro BYU / Utah channel, and not trying to take away from a great video. Very curious to hear people’s thoughts
Once these kids leave their hometowns and play for prep schools loyalty is out the window right? It was a business decision to leave Massachusetts, it’s a business decision to leave Prolific. Prolific pulled players from all over the country, so when they get pulled from they should just take it on the chin.
@ agreed and Prolific remains a top-tier team this year despite losing AJ and Stokes to transfers. I think it is clear that AJ had a better chance of winning a HS national championship with Prolific. Sticking it out there and winning at the highest level despite better $ elsewhere will likely be a decision AJ faces in the pros at some point. I think the trend of multiple transfers during HS may have unintended negative consequences on these players’ personal development and future NBA career paths. It is important to learn how to win at the highest level and I think these “business decisions” often undervalue that
This is incredibly well done. Thank you for putting this together!
Excellent video! You are a very talented storyteller
Go cougars
The BCS era was the best because it was beautifully simple and provided much fodder on ESPN and on sports talk radio. Great times in a sport pre-selling its soul for big time money and making the sport more of a NFL Lite football championship series.
I love the BCS era. It was beautifully simple and provided with unlimited sports talk fodder on the radio and on ESPN. Great times!!! :)
If anything is a cult it would be stickin your two fingers in the air like horns.... so ridiculous is this...the blaming syndrome when you don't know the truth..... Salem Witch trials seem to come to mind. LMAO
Now the IVY League got approval for teams to participate in the FCS Playoffs.
And they didn’t make the playoffs
Curious why you glossed over the blowout loss to Hawaii in 2001. Even if BYU had been considered for an at large, that embarrassing loss would've dropped them anyway.
