Maybe though that’s why I’m such a fan….that describes my life a lot. Getting close to what I want, but having it become just out of my reach. I understand what the program goes through.
Good job recapping the “so close yet so far away” history of byu football. I would’ve replaced 2006 with 2008. Mainly because that year byu was coming off two straight 11 win seasons and two bowl wins over Pac 10 teams and they returned most of their starters and were primed to finally crash the BCS. But sadly, they were unable to do that because of losses to Tcu and Utah. To make things worse they had to see their hated rival Utah crash the BCS for the second time in 5 years. I was a die hard byu fan at that time and that season was extremely heartbreaking for me 😢
Great video. As a long-time Cougar fan, I am used to being disappointed. 2020 was so close (1 yard short as you mentioned,) This year was also so close, but those 2 losses did us in.
This was so depressing. I've been watching BYU football since the late 1970s. This just brought back so many painful memories of both being so close ... on the field and also having a system that just keeps stacking itself against the Cougars. Hopefully all of the patience pays off ... some season soon.
I’m a diehard cougs fan. Love my guys but damn, they’re always so damn close. Heartbreaking honestly. I was next to Tom Holmoe at the ASU game, when Chase caught that ball 2 yards from the end zone. Here’s to hoping next year ends up better. Go cougs.
Random but my family is also cursed with BYU football. My uncle Troy played at the university of Florida for 3 years then transferred in 1984 to BYU. But he had a season ending injury and met a girl before the year. He got married and quit football that offseason. Of course BYU wins it all and he wasn’t part of it. Then my other uncle went out on a recruiting visit to BYU and before he was a starter or famous Steve Young was his guid around BYU for the whole day. My uncle said he couldn’t believe he played QB because he was so small. But my uncle met a girl and started a family right out of HS and quit football. Missed out on playing with Steve Young.
This year especially was so heartbreaking because I felt like we had a great team that could do well in the playoffs. Just completely shot them selves in the foot over and over again in that Kansas game 😢
Suprised the fact byu has always been second fiddle to their rivals wasn't talked about. Their rivals going to a BCS bowl game twice. And getting a p5 conference invite. Then, I lost 9 games in 11 years in a row to said rival. Life was hard for byu fans in the last 29 years.
18:28 I sure hope so because if any season was going to be the one, it would’ve been this one. When everything else had gone right, our two VERY winnable games that would’ve put us there, we “muffed it” as President Hinckely would’ve said.
Skipped right over (what was) arguably one of the best opportunities… 1985. BYU is ranked #7 in mid-October… then loses to lowly UTEP. Had they won that game… they’re easily ranked in the top 4 by end of the season (and possibly as high as #2 after defeating a #4 ranked Air Force team). The program was riding high on credibility at that point… They get an invite to a New Years Day bowl. 6:30 BYU didn’t exactly dismantle everyone else on the schedule… it took Beck to Harline miracle to beat Utah.
And I was a little boy I was a big fan of Lovell Edwards… But after he left, and with the rise of the University of Utah… I switched my allegiances. NOTE: i’m a fan of collegiate football as a whole, I think this whole NIL thing is ruining what made collage football the best sport along with Hockey (NHL)
Just like the face mask against Utah like yall all ways complain about calls so shut up nobody cares that oh I sould have then you guys should have one but didint yes the ref have an out come a little bit in the game but it is up to the players to win it tho and I know about a lot of bad calls this season and I let them go so shut up and go Utes
I think the issue with BYU is that the program is viewed internally as not primarily a football program. It's an extension of the L.D.S. young men's program. They have publically said as much. They don't mind winning, it brings in cash. But a consistently excellent football (or basketball) team isn't a priority.
If this preposterous position was the case, the 4th Para of the YM Theme would need to be updated to say: “I will prepare to become a diligent missionary, loyal husband, loving father and finally see BYU in a New Years six football bowl game and the NCAA final four before I die by being a true disciple of JC, a legacy member of Cougar Club, and a matching donor of my tithes & offerings to the Royal Blue Collective.” Our brothers of the faith in Logan, Laramie & Salt Lake City who root for the Aggies, Utes & Cowboys would need to repent & “Get in line!” In other words, it ain’t happening! I was in both in Laramie & Tempe this year to see the Cougars play, win; and play their way back into the game vs. the Sun Devils in a game that had so much on the line! Love them Cougars! This retrospective was well-done! Keep hoping that it’ll happen one day!! For a while there, it seemed like it was 1984 Déja Vu, 40 years later!!
