    I remember Chris Paul suggesting that Stockton’s assists record was only unbreakable because they fudged the stats when the Jazz played in Utah. It only took about a month to show Chris Paul got more preferential treatment at home with assists than Stockton ever did. Lol

    Remember that when Stockton played, the assist interpretation was spot on like you showed in the video. Today the player has 5 seconds after the pass, he can stop after a pass then take a dribble and it is recorded as an assist. This wasn't the case before. It's easier today.

    • @Byronic19134
      @Byronic19134 5 місяців тому +3

      To be fair I grew up in 90s and actually prefer today’s interpretation so long as it’s within the same sequence. Like if they pass out PnR to a big who pump fakes then drives for a dunk that should be an assists in my eyes because the pass lead directly to setting up that sequence for the scoring player to exploit. This was not the case in the 90s or 2000’s because if it was AI would have averaged over 10 apg at least a couple times in his career, and MJ would have averaged around 8.

  • @thelastflop

    They record assists like this for every player thats how the nba does it. So if you're gonna say Stockton is a fraud, then every other nba player is a fraud too. And what about steals then? Stockton is #1 in steals all-time and you can't fake a steal stat 😅 it's just an attack on the "old heads" to lift up the new era

      And you're an old head trying to make it seem like the older players aren't surpassed. Not only is Stockton's numbers but the reason he has so many assist is the same reason Malone has so many points. They inflate each other and would have lesser numbers if on separate teams. Stop making excuses, Stockton has gotten over rated over the years and only people that haven't used the eye test like to use numbers. Your boy's been exposed. Stop reaching to try and keep him over rated. He's not top 10 pg and never was.

      Steals have always seemed a little tricky to me.
      You can hit the ball away but your teammate gets it and he gets the steal.
      So you could have good hands and a smart defender but if you aren’t too quick you are not gonna pick up the knocked away ball as much.

      These days they do it not sure about in Stocktons day. These days even if a star just kicks it to a guy and the guy goes iso with dribbles and drives and makes it they have called that an assist.

  • @younglove3362

    I alway said numbers don't lie, they just tell half the story. Too many things can be unaccounted for. Injuries, how many games played, lineups etc. When people try to say numbers don't lie, they're just desperately trying to strong arm a losing argument. Humans lie, and they're the ones who put the numbers.

    The guy literaly shows Malone take one dribble and then make the hoop. Then he goes on to say that Malone took a few dribbles? I watched the majority of John Stocktons NBA games after I discovered him as a player, and I can honestly say that I rarely saw him get an assists that I wouldn't have called it an assists, ( though it did happen occasionaly). But you can say that assists numbers during games are questionable, and that includes assists that are never recorded.

    A few other misconceptions about Stockton:
    He was flashy as hell. Fast break demon. Full court dimes. No looks. Behind the backs etc..
    Had a nasty mean streak. Will definitely fight you regardless of size or status.
    EXCELLENT scorer. Nightmare on an open break. Pull up 3s on the break. One dribble pull ups. Off screen jumpers. Left or right. Nasty floater. Worked the backboards. Damn near 50/40/90. Clutch as they come. Drive against literally anyone, anytime. No exaggeration.
    Fast....EXTREMELY fast....Watched him at age 34 cross Jordan 3 times in a single game like he was standing still. Like helpless...Worse than anybody had ever got MJ...Way worse than Iverson...Two of the drives ended in wide open layups the 3rd was an and1...The video is on UA-cam if anyone cares to see it.
    You don't get that far ahead in steals without incredible speed. The dude was an mutant level athlete.

    Numbers tell a part of the story, but if you don't watch the games, numbers don't mean anything. Stockton has 3 gazillion assist more than Isiah career-wise, yet Isiah MURDERED him every time they met, and has 2 rings to show for it.
    People, really, if you want to know anything about basketball, watch the games and listen to the 2 co-announcers, they are always an ex-player and an ex-coach. Don't go on social media, it's full of sponsored crap made to deceive perspective.

    • @user-sj5lk6qr6q
      @user-sj5lk6qr6q 6 місяців тому

      Well you don’t just look at 20 games that two guys played against each other to decide who’s better.
      Isaiah was a better scorer and Stockton was a better passer.
      Both all time greats but their styles weren’t too similar.
      Stockton and Lebron who are both the leaders in points and assists by a good ways after Lebron retires both benefited from health and longevity playing the game.
      That alone will keep those records there for a while.

      @@user-sj5lk6qr6q Man, it's not a debate. No professionale Coach in the history of basketball, from the USA to the Philipines, will ever draft Stockton over Isiah.
      One is a great player, the other is an incredible player, a leader and a winner.
      It's two different breeds.
      This is the exact reason why stats don't help the conversation, they fuck it up.
