I appreciate that Danny has actually given us options. You look at how tight the west is, and it makes sense why we needed to move on from the Mitchell and Gobert era. With Lauri, it's definitely a tough decision. I think the biggest argument for keeping him is that he might be the best player since John Stockton and Karl Malone who actually doesn't want to leave Utah. That doesn't come around often enough and I really think we are 1-2 players away from at least competing in the west. Whether that's an established player and/or some guys coming up in the '25 draft, Utah is in about as good a spot as they can be in a tight western conference.
As D Locke pointed out no team has a successful rebuild leading to playoff contention without a strong tent pole, ie Lauri. We aren’t getting rid of him any time soon. Locke loves his numbers.
Yes he did great by drafting Tatum and Brown even tho they were both top 3 and the obvious picks at that point in the draft but he should get credit for not overthinking and taking the obvious Uber talented wings. But it wasn’t until he left when they brought in Holiday, White and KP that let them get a ring.
Let’s be honest does anybody know what the Jazz are building? Because them not resigning Lauri, or even entertaining trading him makes me question the direction they are going. To me it’s clear they should build around Lauri and have the young assets and picks to do it but that is not what they are doing. Also I don’t agree with the drafting over the last 2 years, like they passed on Cam Whitemore twice last year which is insane. I thought he was clearly better than Hendricks but okay, they wanted Hendricks more, so he was still available with the 16 pick and they go Keyonte George instead which is just, not a good move. It wasn’t at the moment, and it’s not in hindsight. Also while I like Cody Williams, and felt like he was clearly better than Holland for instance, I would not have drafted him over Buzelis who fell right on into their lap. I also felt it was a good spot for Jared McCain to go as well if not because in Utah McCain would be able to develop into the deadly 3 point shooting playmaker he is almost certainly going to become.
Awesome channel, at work doing some binge watching rn
