About Me
I run a small business called The Solent Boat Butler and spend my days repairing, maintaining and refitting sailing boats (often Contessa 32’s due to my long experience with them). I'm mostly in the central Solent area of the UK. Being a cruising and racing sailor with many thousands of inshore and offshore sea miles logged I like to think that I bring a great deal of real-world experience to my work and help many new (and not so new) boat owners to improve and maintain their boats. When I'm not fixing boats I also provide some own-boat sail training, help owners with deliveries, provide pre-purchase inspections and deliver consultancy services to those that are refitting their own boats for cruising or racing.

Great pleasure was taken in removing the original and historic instrumentation on my SJ320 project race boat and replacing with modern NMEA2k sailing electronics from B&G and Orca. This is stage-one of the electrical and electronics upgrade with more to come when funds allow.     To be honest I like the Orca offering a lot better than that of the established suppliers. The addition of the ORCA2 is a force multiplier too.

    Happy New year to yourself and family George..........Can I ask how and what you used to strip all the old antifoul as I'm looking at doing the same and thinking of using a Makita orbital sander ?

      Thanks, the AF was mostly removed by hand with a scraper (pro scraper with vacuum attachment) hard work but cheaper than paying for a media blast which is what I’d normally do. Then the old epoxy coatings were removed with many hours of sanding, 80g disks on my Mirka deros sander. It’s all very tedious but worth it for a smooth bum.

    What you recommend for the race course that LOA 26 feet with great sailing capabilities solid

      Depends on your budget but I have always liked the hunter impalla (ok that’s 28’) or you have the beneteau first class 8 which is about 26’ and has a swing keel so can be trailered. They are both good starter boats for starter money 5-10k. MGC27 is another good older boat. 20-50k opens up many more options but I’m not sure I could bring my self to spend 50k on a 26’ boat.

      That’s why we have to find another way to fund it. Those that get 250k + views on each video start to make some money but you have to invest a lot of time and your own money up front to get there so the vast majority don’t

      You could use it for that but I would go for something a bit more permanent, like a sikaflex/sabatack type adhesive sealant
