No Doubt's Return of Saturn & The Future of Gwen Stefani
Becoming one of the biggest breakout acts of the mid 90's is no easy feat...but to sustain that momentum in the new millennium is a different achievement entirely. Return of Saturn saw No Doubt move away from their ska-pop sound and begin to integrate new wave influences into their more ballad-heavy sound. Lead vocalist Gwen Stefani, with 5 years of success in the rearview, was now free to reflect on her priorities and desires outside of the band. Arguably, Return of Saturn is No Doubt's most pivotal release, signaling a major transition for the band and foreshadowing Gwen Stefani's exaltation in the sphere of pop legend status.

I tried to hate the entire St Anger album but ended up really liking it. I can understand the controversy but getting overly upset about it just seems dumb. Listen to old Metallica if you don't like their recent stuff. Also by the time St Anger was released. There are already so many new bands that have come forth in the Metal scene to hold your interest.

Jason had to take the lead when James was unable to perform in the early 2000s for a show in Dallas I got to go to and he killed it! He sand Creeping Death and it sounded as good as James. Jason had amazing talent, sad the band was not at a good point to appreciate him but I am glad all of them are still successful

I saw these douchbags in 96 and they were garbage. They only played a 5 minute mix of their good stuff. They've been shit ever since riding on they well worn coat tails from the 80s. This video is too kind to these losers. Lars is a is a tallentless Beatles type drummer and the worst part of it all.

Say what you want about load and reload, and the image changes that they made, but these guys sold out with sandman. Still love them to this day, even their “newer” stuff (post black album)… they embodied a genre and are still playing to this day, but the shift came way before these two albums. … And justice for all is still their best work in their purest form in their prime.

This whole video is testament to why old school fans hated this shit. Metallica became a corporation over night. THIS is the reason that people that grew up with this band thinks everything they did after Justice is boring and cheesy. Thank you.

Thanks, and I appreciate your perspective - however I do love Load and put it up there with Justice in my personal rankings of Metallica albums. But I did want to tap into the general feelings of the early fans at the time, instead of just defending the records based on totally subjective critiques. That being said, there are clear moments of subjectivity in the video. Glad you checked it out!

LOL Lars is fairly entertaining to watch with all his goofy faces and mannerisms. He's basically the polar opposite of someone like Fredrik Larzon from Millencolin, who it seems like in most videos I've seen of him is usually stone faced and doesn't move much besides his arms haha. No hate Fredrik you and Millencolin are boss.

I like this album. Def a fan of their more technical guitar work. As far as Deron not understanding Suddenly Tragic, lmao. If so I'd imagine that's because Chad wrote the lyrics to the song, that's why they're not typical CKY lyrics and are kinda dumb. I think Deron came up with just one line in the chorus if I'm not mistaken? Like "an answer can be found" maybe. Edit: nope, I was thinking of Deron coming up with "you've entered a familiar realm "for that song and Chad wrote the rest of that one (again you can tell from the lyrics). Chad maybe wrote all of Suddenly. Man I love Dressed in Decay, one of my favorite CKY songs. All Power to Slaves is boss.

I wouldn’t call them “sellouts”. I see it more like a band that evolved their songs as to not feel “dated” and to hopefully stay relevant in an ever changing musical world. I don’t blame them for it because as a band it makes sense to stay relevant. That being said it’s okay to say ya don’t like some of the stuff they went onto make. Heck I prefer their older stuff to later efforts but I am sure there are others who like their later work over the older stuff. Now beyond the music I do agree that there have been some dickish moves and decisions that were made. Though they are just human and flawed people. Ya mix ego, envy and drugs/alcohol into the mix ha get a dysfunctional system. James making fun of Kurt’s death and Lars comments about Napster come to mind. I mean all that dysfunction as a whole lead to Jason leaving the band.

Lars' drumming on this album is legit leagues better than anything they've released since. If you can get past the church bell snare... It's creative (well, as creative as Lars could be at the time lmao), and it's forceful. That creativity has been sorely missing in the last three studio albums, which is why Death Magnetic through 72 Seasons all have a weird "samey" feel to them, regardless of the few diamonds in the rough on those albums.

Both albums have great songs but definitely a lot of skipable filler. I ended up making a playlist of what I consider the best and in my opinion if this was released it would have been a great album with every song a winner. 1. Fuel 2. Until it sleeps 3. I disappear 4. Hero of the day 5. Unforgiven II 6. Low man's lyric 7. Wasting my hate 8. Mama said 9. Fixxxer

I think Imaginary Threats and A#1 are pretty great but don't care at all about the rest of Carver City. I like the previous 3 records though, and think AACBF is just as good as the other two. But yeah CKY doesn't exist without Deron. Chad is a great guitar player but he's a crap songwriter and lyricist. I guess Deron is probably hard to get along with though he seems very soft spoken and low key in interviews. Not really surprising though he doesn't get along with former bandmates that were trashing him behind his back. Such a shame what happened with them. Very nice job on the video big 🐕

I’ve always told people that albums are important because more than just a song, they paint a complete picture of where an artist or band is at a period of time. To me, St. Anger is the sound of my favorite band dying. I understand the “stripped down and laid bare” tone of the album, and while there might be germs of good riffs, the lyrics are dreadful, the endless, annoying kick-TONG-kick-TONG sound of the drums and drumming, the lack of solos and actual composition, the bloat, the cut and paste of random ideas..

St Anger is a good album. Yes, it's not their best but its not bad. Its heavy af and reminds me of kill em all in the sense of production and rawness. There are solid songs and tbh, a lot of people who don't like it in my opinion are just closed minded and automatically don't like it due to the drums/production or because it's not a ''classic'' Metallica album. To me it's a straight up METAL album all riff and straight to the point.

26:00 I can Remember back in the IDR days when ASK CKY had Chad, Jess and Derron talking about pre ordering 3/4 albums at their local record store, giving a fake address and never picking them up. Why? So that stores would be forced to put it on the shelves to try to sell it. You can't expect your fans to show that level of loyalty and support without sometimes getting bitten on the hand by them.
