- Mike Kinsella is one of the Midwest's most respected and prolific songwriters. After the end of American Football in 2000, Kinsella ventured off on his own path as Owen. In the years since, he's released nine full-length LP's of original material. In this video, we'll delve into his music evolution over the course of these records and dig a little bit into his history as a multi-instrumentalist and Emo hero.
Love love love both Owen and American Football and so glad you made this!
This is a great video. I love Owen sm
Owen needs more recognition. He’s just getting better and better.
To be honest i think it's the opposite way. I am a fan since day 1 and i think the last 3-4 albums are pretty ambitious in their production but the songs are just not memorable
His brother is better
Whenever I listen to think about it sob so so hard it’s so therapeutic
ADS, I've been watching you're exceptionally crafted Metallica stuff, they were my first favorite band and they mean a lot to me still. That being said, I flipped when i got a notification in my feed that you were covering Owen. Mike's solo work is still so unsung even to genre obsessives, and this video does a phenomenal job of shedding light on what makes Owen so great. I've had a strong connection to the entire discography and in my opinion you are super on point with your descriptors of each record, with astute observations on his progression as an artist.
Looking forward to more content! subbed! :)
I’m glad that you have such an interest in Mike Kinsella and Owen! I’ve been a huge fan since 2018 and have adored his work greatly. It was a difficult decision to do this video in particular, as I knew that most Metallica fans might not be interested in a video about an obscure midwest artist, but I knew it would be an integrity move, and your comment solidifies my belief in that instinct.
I know that if I can grow as a storyteller and documentarian on UA-cam, there is the possibility that more people will open up and dig into these videos on lesser known subjects, which is really exciting.
Owen is my most listened to artist since 2006 , those 2001-2009 records I've been listening to forever and still are not sick of them
I thank you for checking the video out! A large amount of my viewer-base are mostly focused on the Metallica stuff, but I’m always happy to see someone that is passionate about Owen’s amazing music.
@@adarkerstandard Funnily enough I found you searching Owen songs on UA-cam, and I am also a huge metallica fan. Subscribed. Not enough love/content on UA-cam about Owen.
My favorite musician ever . His project Owen has helped me at so many different points in my life .
First Owen record is a gem
Thank you. Excellent video
A very classy video essay, keep going my dude. Would love to see some more montage ideas, transitions etc, but you rock anyway. Hope to see you grow bigger
Thanks!
Yeah, this vid has less transitions and visual stimuli than my broader, longer vids, but that’s somewhat due to the lack of early Owen footage. Out of everything I could find, there was maybe 3-5 relevant vids from the years 2001-2006. It’s always a struggle to keep the visual flow consistent across the video, especially when entire portions of the artist’s career aren’t well documented.
@@adarkerstandard you're 100% right, sometimes it's hard to manage lack of footage and harder to think of cool visual effects etc. Waiting for future vids, for sure will check out your previous work.
Great watch, amazing artist
RITES OF SPRING MENTIONED RRRAAAAAHHHH
Bird in hand is also so beautiful
Mike kinsella is a musical genius
Back in my day, we didn't call The Promise Ring and American Football "Midwestern Emo". It was just emo. And if you're older and considered Rites of Spring or Fugazi (or hell, even Embrace) as emo, then I think they just called it indie. Labels are funny.
