Critical Role brought me to TEARS and then THIS happened
You know what’s funny? I never laid it out this way… but you perfectly explained how I’ve run Vampire in every WoD game I’ve ever run. I took a lot of stylistic approach from Jim Butcher’s ideas as well. Which… welll… again. Basically the Mob. Which is why my Mages hunted them like freaking vermin.
Having your heart in the right place is a huge determent in any Vampire game. Anarchs, don't realize they are as much a part of the Vampire world, as any other Kindred.
How do you reconcile what you said about millenials misunderstanding the clans and wrongly thinking that they all need to clearly show tgeir loyalty and have the same allegience, if you've also compared the clans to crime families in uour other video?
We said it in the video. Camarilla is like the Mafia as such. They are collaborators who often war with each other. The camarilla also assigns coteries in V5 for specific purposes/jobs so mixed clans work with built in tension and scheming.
Playing it like the mob is just politics.
That was genius. I've never thought about it before, but it fits 100%.
Ive always looked at VtM as an Omerta simulator. I mean, you can be a stoolie for the FBI.
you guys would create an awsome version of vampire, but im happy that you are focused on life affirming projects
Funny enough, I'm still very at the beginning but I was infact a few times mocked for going to deep in my character, with also the addition of being told that that isn't what my personal opinion on the matter, multiple times, and every time I had to say that it's an opinion that my character has, that's all
I think having clan videos with the view of the mob ideas you guys have discussed
Hunger dice and blood resonance sound cool enough to get me to read the book
Oh.
You... Don't know who millenials are, do you.
>channel created by millennials Wow this guy doesn't know millennials
@@blacklodgegames You're talking about a game created by Gen Z for Gen Z and the title is "Did Millenials Ruin VtM". I mean really? I have to conclude one of three things; you're completely ignorant to the age range of these people, you really think the Gen Z version is better in which case, nothing was ruined as this is no longer millenial VtM, or I have wildly misunderstood something. Or the title is clickbait. That's a fourth.
@@IzraelGraves you will not find a single Gen z writer in the credits, what are you smoking
@@blacklodgegames Alright, so you're ignorant. Noted. I'll see myself out, good luck with whatever this is
Ha! Jokes on you. I haven't been playing Vampire the Masquerade... At all.
This is my first time seeing you guys stream, the title was intriguing as I am planning to run a 1 shot of VTR; I’ve ran VTM 20th, it crashed and burned due to me railroading too hard and the player was having a bad day. Your videos have made me more excited to run VTR 2e!
@@CountLuciferLeviatha that's awesome man, it's such a good, overlooked game
Great strem once again. I wasn't familiar with vampire's setting or lore at all, but the way you two described it, sounds super intriguing. I'll be backing the shucked oyster when the kickstarter goes up. Never quit guys! Top, premiere content consistently. Thank you !
@@MeForWords thank you so much
Tzimisce are my favorite clan from V:tM Revised/3rd. I think the caricature you guys have of people going full Clive Barker/Hellraiser with them is the Fishmalk variant of them that bad players used. To "turn a person into a chair," as per the example you gave near the end, and show it off for shock value means that the Tzimisce in question would have to recognize just how shocking it is, and get off on the idea like some kind of edgelord. A much better way to think of them are the early 1900's Eugenicists, the ones who made all those fucked up dog breeds just to prove that they could, and didn't really value the lives of those creatures. They didn't do it for whimsy, but to gain further understanding about how genetics worked when it wasn't really all that understood, and also out of a desire to aim for perfection. Making a person into a living chair does nothing useful; creating a Matrix-esque garden out of an unwilling herd does. I think V:tM ended up associating the Tremere with this more, but Tzimisce if not for canonically being Slavic, would have made much better representatives of that group Godwin's Law refers to. In the more modern day, I see people like Brian Johnson doping on his own son's blood to stay young as something a Tzimisce might do, same with all those people who are fanatical about the potential of stem cells. If you've ever seen this movie called "Never Let Me Go" with Andrew Garfield, Keira Knightly and Carey Mulligan, the sort of people who came up with that would be Tzimisce. And if you don't care to watch a dystopian romance, it's basically a grittier version of "The Island" with Ewan McGregor and Scarlet Johansson. The horror of Tzimisce isn't them guffawing over what a naughty thing they did, it's about them being so inhuman that the terrible things they do to people don't register to them as terrible things. It's just for the sake of progress/metamorphosis. The Antediluvian being a "cathedral of flesh" is cool and all for them, but that ain't your character. I will say that their clan flaw was stupid though, having to sleep with dirt from their homeland. I get the Dracula angle but that's so boring. In games I played we changed it to be that, while all vampires are kind of desiccated on the inside, with non-functions organs sans maybe with the Eat Food merit but not really, the Tzimisce would have that periodically happen to their outside, too. In order to not fall apart they had to hunt for both blood *and* flesh to replace what was sloughing off of them which made hunting and the risks associated with it that much more fun (and sadistic). Kind of like a.. messier version of the Cappadocian's clan flaw. We also recognized that Vicissitude as a Discipline, beyond a permanent/prepared body mod you could use later, was really not a combat discipline. No one was rolling to fleshcraft or bonecraft in the middle of a fight, it was a surgery discipline, you used it in your haven or some other secluded situation where you captured someone. Which also meant when a Tzimisce did get into a fight with another vampire they just had Animalism and Auspex, neither of which help very much in direct combat. They persisted cause they mostly hid at home, had food brought to them through servants, and their homes were houses of horror with those fleshcrafted warghouls that actually served a purpose. And of course, never say Vicissitude is a fucking living-disease-alien from the umbra. >.> Revenants were also fucking awesome. You can make a really fun story by saying the players only get to be Revenants, with the goal of impressing the lone Tzimisce NPC to get Embraced (or risk betraying them to get it from someone outside their Domain, which is the only safe place for you as a Revenant to live openly).
Camarilla: “I’m gonna make them an offer they can’t refuse.” Anarchs: “CAN YOU DIG IT?!”
I love VTM pre 5E and I love VTR. Both are great for different reasons.
Concerning Mage, similar to V:tM and V:tR, I would say Awakening is better than Ascension. Both in hitting the core story themes, and being a "modern day Ars Magica".
How do you keep a coterie of different clan neophites/members together?
We talk about this a bit in our video on the camarilla sourcebook. The camarilla assigns you to a coterie now, so it can be an enforced order to have mixed clans
I loved the video. but please could you guys look at Werewolf the forsaken 2nd and Hunter the Vigil 2nd?
I played a Mekhet, i remember annoying the GM by rolling a success everytime i met an npc or went anywhere and triggered my foresight power. Basically having acid flashbacks constantly.
I love VTM 2nd edition and VTR equally, but for different reasons. VTR is better at capturing the vampire mythos at its core. Would have been better if they had left all clans and bloodlines out and just stuck to archetypes. The Chronicler's Guide is the best sourcebook for it.
@@George713M chroniclers guide is fantastic
@@blacklodgegames You guys have to do a video on how the Monster Garage rules in the Chronicler's Guide foreshadowed the rules lite craze of today
@@yukiminsan it's been so long since I read that book, I barely remember the monster garage. "The Other" sticks out in my mind though
@@blacklodgegames Monster Garage pares down the attributes and gets rid of skills entirely in favor of vices based on the seven deadly sins. There are some other changes but it's basically a rules lite storyteller system from 18 years ago. I've never run it so I don't know if it's actually good, but it is intriguing.
@@yukiminsan ah that's right, I forgot about that. I imagine I would hate it lol
As a millenial that played previous edition, what they did to the Malkavians pretty much turned me off from Vampire The Masquerade forever
I run VtM 5e set in the Dark Ages for a group of stellar players. We've played for a year and a half now and are having a blast. I keep 3 things in mind when we tell our vampire stories: drama, horror, tragedy. Those + opportunities for meaningful choices with consequences have resulted in stories my players and I will remember for the rest of our nights.
Need Macris to write VtR demographic rules into ACKS axiom. What will flow out is the domain rules and stress points for Vampire the Camarila
Dang, you commented on this right at the end.
I wasn't aware that there was a game I wasn't playing, and that I was actually playing it wrong
Black Lodge Games official horror game: Vampire: the Deep State
I commented in the Live chat along those same lines. Just too dark for the current timeline. Who wants to be a monster in a world ruled by them. The elites would literally be cloning humans as food as they similarly grow humans for plasma, organs and essential fluid extraction. Better to fantasize being the hero in a world of darkness. Also it's so much easier for the GM that way.
You guys could make a video about how WtA completely subverted the werewolf myth in which the tragic character accursed to become a beast turned into a furry Captain Planet.
@@diegoborges3716 Subverted is a funny way to put it. They made something that bears little resemblance to almost any Werewolf media anyone would be familiar with. Of any splat, Werewolf (WoD and CofD both) is the absolute worst at simulating the Werewolf horror fantasy people would actually expect and want (the only thing that comes close is Mummy). Comparing it with how Vampire synthesized the folkloric and pop culture vampire makes it look particularly embarrassing. Gameplay-wise, yeah tearing stuff up as a Werewolf is fun I guess.
Ha! As you were talking about Brando I was thinking…McKellen…then hey presto! 😂
Which players hurt you so bad that you blame *optional* tools? It seems the real issue is people that agree in bad faith, not the tools. I use these tools in the games I run but I run games for people that I consider my friends. It's useful as a reminder during games because I do a lot of improv in between the structure I prepared and some folks don't like the OTT body horror I sometimes throw in, and one player has an involuntary vomit reaction to certain things like, well, mentioning vomit in any more detail than "being sick". At no point do my games revolve around puke and if the body horror aspects are viral to the game we have another little sub-rule that the player temporarily puts fingers in ears and the other players get the description. It's about common sense use just as much as common sense itself. The tools are actually beneficial to highlight things beforehand so they don't become an issue during the game. I have my list of no-go things I have in front of me while I prepare and if something is somehow vital then I give the player concerned a heads up that one or more of these things may come up in play so I hold up a card with an exclamation point directly before that point so they can decide if they want to plug their ears, not look at a handout etc or brace themselves. Honestly, saying that *optional* safety tools are a weapon is actually pretty shitty. If the subject was "how safety tools can be abused, and possible ways to negotiate that abuse" I'd be well on board with this. Basically, this video can be summarised with "safety tools are weapons if you're playing with manipulative strangers who don't know and/or respect each other to share a good time", and if your gaming group fits that description then I'd put twenty quid on the table that each session is full of hidden micro aggressions and the overall attitude is man-up and get over it. If someone feels that having safety tools would help them have a good time but there's reservations based on the intended game then thrash out some sub-rules to mesh them in. Safety tools are not supposed to be used as Uno reverse or some kind of Yugioh trap reverse card, and if you're playing with someone that's going to abuse the safety system then it's the person abusing it at fault. This is coming from me, a dickhead GM and player who wants to get in the guts of every awful scenario possible like some kind of aging edgelord whose only RPG friends are filthy casuals but we use the tools and make it work so we all get a turn having the sort of games we like. I ran a game of Black Crusade and the players were all followers of Slaanesh in one form or another, and two of the players didn't like gratuitous sex and violence (I don't particularly feel comfortable with sexual descriptions but I'm an edgelord when it comes to body horror and ultraviolence). We made it work because the entire group wanted to explore what Slaanesh was really about by "living the lifestyle" and seeing how it fit into WH40K. TL:Dr Safety tools are optional and if people are abusing them then it's the people at fault, because the same safety tools are a good structure to constantly remind us what is acceptable and all about respecting and trusting each other. Put it another way, if you respect and trust a romantic partner you don't need to marry them but doing so imposes a set of rules on everyone involved (monogamy, till death so us part etc) so you only marry someone if everyone involved agrees. You don't expect everyone to stay chaste and only sleep with you if you get married... Although that might explain incels.... Anyway, safety tools are good as it's a contract to reassure people you trust and want to game with that respect each other and they will be respected, and if there's reservations then thrash out some metaphorical pre-nup sub clauses.
Changeling the Lost. god i am obssessed with it rn
You are aware a lot of mafia ideas are based on roman politics
No i found a way to not to fall to either of these issues. Because you have apply external forces into the game.
Being infatuated by the person you are feeding from is such a fucking cool idea. The possibilities in role play just getting a nightly drink can be awesome.
Vampire the Requiem did have a 3rd edition... It was just rebranded as vampire the masquerade 5th edition...
Would love a bloodlines style game for vampire the requiem 2nd edition
Chronicles of Darkness gang we out here ✋😤 EDIT: No discussion of Requiem is complete without a deep dive into the Chronicler's Guide, the best book ever released for any Vampire game.
The Chronicler's Guide is awesome.
I like how nWoD was less defined and more mysterious. You could really run an X Files investigation game where you just didn't know what spooky stuff was out there.
What is nWOD?
@@turoyse8109 new World of Darkness

This is the best description of the game I have ever heard.
"You want compromise? How is this, I spent 200 years in the coffin"
love that you positively flip to a recommendation for a game you support that offers rules and setting to meet the need for a good game in the style and theme that would appeal !
Coming back to rewatch again. Still one of the funniest things on UA-cam
What's funny, is that 10 months later despite the hatred you had at the time for the muppet campaign seeing what you got out of the battle logs and Jeffro's Branstein work through your refinement has been very interesting to see evolving naturally through your later vids like Vampire for instance. But what's kinda funny is that right now the Traveller Brainstein he's experimenting with right now has none of that overt goofiness.
if your characters aren't in Argentina during May through september, and alaska during october through march, you're playing vtm wrong.
Absolutamente! Played VtM back in 1st and 2nd edition and this is how we tried to play it: like Goodfellas but with Vampires!
So true
if you cant play a tabletop RPG and tell a ongoing story as the DM then you have only your self to blame as any setting of an RPG requires you to not only come up with quests for your players but entire worlds or parts of them based on the setting and given the freedom of power to change anything to suit not only you the DM but the style of your players its all of you playing and telling an ongoing story to think your going to have the exact same energy and look of any streamed RPG group only means your insane as your not them nor are your players everyone has a different style of DMing and playing
Thus sounds great! Shadowdark definitely has room for more robust carousing mechanis. I hope you'll consider adding male prostitutes too for the sake of variety, though.
