As a teaching / example of play, this was amazing. Even quite entertaining to watch! One thing I want to point out for viewers: The combat was 50-55 minutes, but that was with rules explanations, and with 5 rounds (a relatively longer combat). Combats in Mythras go quite fast! And despite being a pretty standard combat (as in, no interruptions, changing of sides, etc), there was SO MUCH depth, way beyond hit point attrition.
Additionally, "rounds" function differently than in d&d. Each round cycles through the initiative order several times which is equivalent to many more rounds in a d&d like system. It moves very fast.
Alright, time to go through the video with a fine tooth comb and point out all the rules violations and mistakes that I would NEVER make 😂 Great rules explanations along the way.
Great demo of how combat works in Mythras. I really liked how you added the color to actual mechanical effects, that sort of thing really adds a lot to feel of combat and other scenes too. The beauty of special effects is that those really are the mechanical effects and you can color them pretty much how you want, whatever makes most sense in the situation and/or what makes the scene look more like what sort of feel you look for. Good work!
I appreciate the work you put in to the cinematic cuts. I understand now what you were talking about last night. I think there’s a great conversation to be had about how to bridge that pacing gap. You did a great job here: I think the cut to face is great. But I also know how much work that is to do. Also Butcher block. Love it.
Every time I have done live, multi-camera, multi-mic, recordings of live plays, some piece, or several pieces, of equipment let us down. I stopped doing those for two reasons, one I prefer to think about the game more than the recording, and file sizes in those days began to outstrip processing power at an annoying rate. When things evened out, I no longer had local players that want to be recorded. I empathize with the struggle you faced and the feeling of how arduous a process this was for you. The end result was very satisfying, though. Thanks for putting the effort in~
I think the biggest distinction I see in this gameplay is genuine give and take between the two players. The GM isn't making all the choices or describing the outcomes - the player is, too. This is really cool to watch. It's nice when a group can get on this level of sync and the players understand they've got the 'allowance' to take some narrative liberty.
VERY Well-done gents! I enjoyed that a great deal! I am looking forward to more of these if your intent to do more. I like the rules and the system a lot, I hope you do more of these battles. Great work! Very graphic I imagine people are going to start slipping in the blood on the floor soon from that head wound unless its a dirt floor
Remember that video where you guys talked about the difference between acting and role-playing? Well, thank you for showing your work! This was awesome.
That was brutally delicious. Really intense combat, I think this was a great tutorial for mythras. I don't typically enjoy combat heavy games, but this kept me engaged the whole time. I'm definitely a fan of lighter games, but I can see how these heavier rules prompt description and excitement. Definitely making me think of ways to pair it down for my own game (I run d100 light games). I was hesitant about the hit locations, but they do seem to add a lot of flavour here. I loved the part where the guy with the cleaver in his head made his endurance roll to stay conscious. Brutal stuff. As for an actual play, the hot start was enjoyable, and I would be excited to see where this story goes. The pace was fast, and I think it makes it an enjoyable experience.
Good bite sized actual play video and the way you guys speak is engaging for UA-cam. Better than most actual play series out there. Well done with the editing.
nice actual play, i really enjoyed the mythology you've employed in this episode. It didn't slow down or get bogged down in confusion. it avoided all the common gripes people have with actual plays. Keep up the good work fellas.
We also accidentally applied maximized damage without a crit and forgot to roll double damage dice for impale. Usually we'd be a lot more careful about the rules of the table, but we are trying to keep the flow going!
This is interesting. Very different from the live plays I've seen. I found it to be entertaining! It helps that it was tightly edited, so even though it was all combat it was still very engaging, while also not feeling like it was following scripted beats.
If you like to chew the scene I recommend checking out extended conflicts. They originally appeared in M-Space but also odd soot and the comae engine. It basically is tool that alows you to turn skill checks into conflicts.
AMAZING!! Loved this scene! The explanations were concise and to the point, really good actual play. Can't wait to see what's going to happen with Aaron and Thomas !
Awesome video guys. I used to watch actual plays a fair amount a few years back and the part I always skipped was the middle of combat, which inevitably became a slog-fest. This, on the other hand, kept me engaged all the way through. Yet to run Mythras for my group, so it was a great demonstration too. Hope to see more.
Hey guys! Watched the recording of your stream yesterday and I agree to points you made there. I was concerned that I will not like this Live-Play anyway, but my God you NAILED it. I craved for more by the end of episode and really hope it will pick up enough interest so you can continue this series. Best of luck! P.S. (a shame I live in Europe, so it's rare chance for me to join your streams)
My group uses two pools of glass beads of different colors of which one represent action points and one luck points. It has worked pretty well for us but I don’t see a reason why just tallying up using pen and paper would not work just as well.
There are a couple Actual Plays out there like this. Me, Myself, and Die comes to mind. Multiple cameras with edits to make sure it's focusing in on the most interesting view per shot. I can't imagine the edit effort. I got into running Actual Plays of Pendragon because of other Actual Plays that made me want to play Pendragon. I agree that some of the overly produced stuff feels not so genuine and feels more like stage acting than anything else. Good stuff boys. Keep it up.
Unlike in BRP you don’t have to roll for passion to benefit from it. Instead you get a small bonus for all skill rolls that are related to it. Of course you can roll the passion if you want to see if you have to act in a certain way. So, in Mythras you always get the benefit, although smaller than in BRP.
This is true - and it's good to point this out as all the other instances of Passion use do require rolls - except when used as a comparative measurement. This is the first bullet point about Passions and it states that they can, if appropriate, Augment a skill in use. Augment is a specific game term meaning the Skill Rating can be expanded by 1/5 the value of the Skill or Passion used as a boost to the skill being rolled. I find it is useful to write that amount next to the Passion so that no calculation or the need to remember the number has to interfere in play. We have found in the play of some settings or situations that rolling to see if the Passion can Augment a skill in *this moment* works better for us rather than being "always on" for applicable skills, but the letter of the rule is that this enhancement, like any other Augment, is not rolled.
Yeah we messed up some of the rules here, usually to PC detriment. Forgot to roll damage twice and pick the higher result on impale, rolled passion instead of giving a flat bonus or using it as a substitute for a skill, and also could have used a luck point to reverse the digits in a roll early on instead of rerolling. Also used maximize damage without a crit
@@blacklodgegames Don't sweat it. You got more things right and you noticed in the edit what got away from you in the moment, under pressure. As you note, you can't focus on play, on confirming rules, on explaining rules, on learning new rules, and recording the session all at the same time and still have it conform to the dynamic you wanted for the final video. Imagine how much prouder you will be of the tenth one you do, when many things involved in this one have become more familiar and require less effort~
Certainly a lot to track in this game, it does look like it takes some practise to play, but I absolutely want to run an Elder Scrolls Mythras game for my bros

Concentrating on not making mistakes for the camera artificially constrains the role-playing experience. The pressure to eliminate "dead air" accentuates an already tense scene, but is more intense than playing quickly to respect the other's game time. The duet mode of play certainly allowed for taking time to explain rules, motivations, and descriptive details that might need to have been sacrificed to accommodate a larger play group. Both players are emotive and animated enough to hold the attention of remote viewers. Showing play receipts is valuable to other hobbyists, but the YT algorithm doesn't like variations in presentation styles. Consider launching a spin-off channel (or platform even) for creating an archive of actual plays. Consider pay wall for the 'old' stuff (90+ days). My $$$ is not enough to thank you for Shucked Oyster.
Good video/live play or whatever it's called, I will say I prefer the presentation of "live play" like this, I'm not sure why, it can be because it was short and sweet, or maybe the scene/setting, maybe it was the way you guys did the rules explanation and action descriptions, or maybe it just cuz i like your "UA-cam personas", etc.....i don't know what exactly made me really like this but it was cool
Nice work with the tension building and pacing. However - I would suggest some sort of set-up to hook us into the characters before the combat. Just an emotional beat of some sort to introduce us to them and make us care. Without that, the stakes of combat will never be as high as you worked so hard to try to make them.
Awesome combat descriptions, this is a place I struggle with immensely when playing. Finding the right word on the fly is tough for me for some reason and in fast-paced combat it becomes even harder, maybe mythras and its mechanics directly informing the table of how the combat happens would help a lot with that. Unless you guys were kind of learning on the fly, but it seemed like it was more so for the audience's context than for your own remembering.
