  • If you think min-maxers and power gamers are bad now, you have no idea the level to which people were playing D&D in the 1970's. There explosive creativity and imagination at the beginning of the #ttrpg hobby was prehistoric in it's proportions.
This is an excerpt from the full Black Lodge Games Podcast which you can find here: • How Role Playing Games...

I'm a total hypocrite. When I GM, I want to run a gritty street-level game with high stakes and plenty of risk. When I'm a player, I turn into a min-maxxing S.o.B.

Because GMing and playing are so different, I think we should actually expect rather than be surprised by the differences in our preferences between the two. That said, our pet peeves also tend to be our own habits imo.

What's different about the theater kid faction today isn't necessarily that it's worse, but that it has the backing of multibillion dollar corporations, national political parties, and international ideologies, and it's actively seeking to drive people out of the hobby.
It's unremarkable to see LFG posts that specify "non-whites preferred," and they aren't talking about an all-drow campaign.

My word. I'm surprised to see that this comment was acknowledged by the creators. I was under the impression that just about every creator on this platform adhered to the culture you're talking about. At this point, I've simply accepted that this is just the way it is - Something I'll have to tolerate until I'm able to wrangle a group of like-minded friends to play with.
It's always a surprise when I run into players who don't adhere to this kind of culture. Look... I've even learned to speak in code to avoid raising suspicion that I don't support certain ideologies. Life is freaking weird now, lol!

@@alexabel8010 Once upon a time I tried to do this. Girls are brought up to be non-confrontational and _nice,_ after all. But they never stopped pushing.
So now I'm actively hostile to deviants, racists, and Marxists, and I thoroughly check game forums and the Consumer's Guide to TTRPGs before spending any money on anything.

Or there is the other problem, after 10+ years TSR believed no one could possibly have a 20th level character and printed no material for high levels.

Honestly Dude, 20th level isn't even fun long term. 17-20 are an awesome finale to a campaign, but I'd argue most players get very tired very quickly!

They are on record for having said they assumed that players would retire the character once they hit level 20; the story was over he reached the pinnacle.

@@almanacofsleepOn the one hand that's a fair enough outlook, the "character progression" has ended. But on the other hand, WHAT'S THE POINT OF CAPSTONE ABILITIES.
Why does every class have a feature that WOTC admits they can effectively never use, just dangling off in the distance

Absolutely untrue. Rob Kuntz discusses this in his Open Form Broadside Issue 1 (available from the Three Line Studio website):
“The majority of these started you at a high level whereas the minority were attained through leveling up. This design approach incorporated playing gods and their champions and scaled downward to include a minimum starting level of 6. And this allowed GMs and players a wider range of imaginative choices while propelling participants into the higher realms of fantasy which were-in whole-the inspirations for D&D’s creation to begin with.”

I remember in 3.5 it gave "mainstream" rise to the "Optimization" approach of people treating character building like they were playing WoW or EQ. nonsense like combining 10 different prestige classes to make some monstrosity that, if built at 20th level with cherry picking magic items, could do 500 points of damage in a round or other craziness.
IMHO that was the real rise of it, because people before were doing wacky and wild things in their home groups, they weren't trying to spread this "optimal build" shit to everyone and pretending like they were doing a favor by pointing it out.

    • @CowCommando
      @CowCommando 6 місяців тому +2

Yep, to this day it's frustrating trying to find decent advice on 3.5 mechanics and instead being inundated by post after post of optimization builds. I just want some ideas on how to make animal companions viable, not ten page dissertations on why your ranger or druid build is the best ever.

I think the internet is the main culprit. Remember 1st Edition, BECMI, and AD&D were pre-forums and mostly pre internet. Any information about optimization was localized.
When 3rd Edition rolled out the internet, let everyone find out quickly the best ways to break the new system like Bane broke Batman

Far far worse nerds. D&D was considered something you hid often until another person showed a skight bit of interest. Church people thought we were Satanic after all. And the cool people thought we werent.
And we had a third level player show up claiming to have killed Thor in a previous campaign and bearing his hammer.
