In the span of 12 hours, I stepped on a pin tomato, got a tetanus booster, and made a mockup of Simplicity r11334. Honestly can't say I recommend 2/3 of these. The one I recommend being the tetanus shot, because you never know when you'll slip and land on something unsanitary.

    To make sure your material is straight and taught, put 1st clamp in the middle on side of frame where you sit, then go to opposite end of frame and attach clamp directly opposite the 1st clamp pulling material tight. Now go to one of the long sides and repeat, tightening as you go. Same for the remaining side. Go back to the side where you started, and place a clamp 1/2 way between the middle clamp and the nearest corner. Repeat on other side. Repeat on remaing 3 sides, adjusting tension as you go. If you need more tension put on more clamps. If your clamps are opposite each other, add more clamps if you want. Just remember that each clamp needs an opposite clamp to keep even tension. If this is too confusing, look up how a quilter keeps the layers of a quilt straight before binding. (I apologize for the length.)

    Hi, thanks for sharing your work with us. My tops often have the gaping loose fit bc of being heavy on top. My instructor told me to shave off a bit of the pattern at the top center when they are two pieces with a center seam. When it is one piece cut on the fold line, I make a small pleat in the pattern and tape it down. Is that kosher sewing, I don’t know, but it’s the best I can come up with. If anyone has a suggestion, do tell. 😅

    You have taken a large chunk of your pocket opening away. I was always taught 5 stitches across, 5 stitches down, 5 stitches on the diagonal to make the triangle. This strengthens a weak point without taking away much of the opening.

    I never cut to the pattern instructions.... Am i doing it wrong?? The dresses seem to come out good. What's the reason for laying it the fabric that way? Is it simply because of the line fabric?

    • @threadandneedlefish
      @threadandneedlefish 11 місяців тому

      I like to follow the cutting diagram as part of the review process since sometimes, the diagram does know best, and other times, I can cut things out more efficiently and use less fabric. The only thing you really need to make sure is that you're cutting the pattern pieces on the correct grainline. I work a lot with cotton wovens, so I can usually cut on the straight or cross grain without any issue, but when I'm working with stretchy stuff I just need to make sure the stretch is going in the correct direction. I used to be really bad about cutting things on the bias, so some of my old projects have stretched out and warped over time.

    Hi, I can't choose the size. the table shows that I should sew pants in size 20, and when I check the size of the finished clothes, it turns out to be a tent. Are these pants that wide? 😢 would you like to help me ?

    • @threadandneedlefish
      @threadandneedlefish Рік тому

      They're patterned to be a little bit more roomy, which makes them more comfortable and practical to wear with thicker, more utility type fabrics. For pants, I find it easiest to take them in at the side seams, but it might be tricky with the side placket on these. I'd recommend making a mock up in the size the table recommends, and then if it's too big, start taking the seams in by about 1/4 inch or so at a time. Leave your original line of stitching, so in case you play around and figure out that for you, maybe taking in more at the center front or center back is going to fit better than taking in more at the side seams. And then once you're pretty happy with your assorted nips and tucks, you can reevaluate the size you need to cut the fabric out on. Just make sure to triple check your math; I know I have definitely made some mistakes when trying to outsmart the pattern haha.

    • @Lady_Karen
      @Lady_Karen Рік тому

      @@threadandneedlefish if you had such dimensions, what size would you choose? hips 114, waist 86, bust 98

    • @threadandneedlefish
      @threadandneedlefish Рік тому

      @Lady_Karen I think a size 18 would still fit, but it would be a tighter fit, so if your fabric has a little bit of a stretch, or if you want a little more of a sexier, pin-up look, that might be the way to go. Personally, I would still recommend the size 20 since I always find it much easier to make a too big pattern smaller than to try to make a too small pattern bigger. That extra 10cm seems like it's going to be super huge, but once it's on and you're sitting down, moving around, and going about your daily life, it's probably going to be a lot more comfortable.

    Hi, I'm making the complete 2 piece of the 8747. But my challenge is that i have a shorter torso so i always need to adjust every pattern i have, that is also why i started to make my own clothes as much as possible bc modern clothes don't fit me that well. The facing is indeed really needed to give the peplum body even for light fabrics and yes the waistline stay is there more for accentuating the waist.

    This is a great overview, thanks. I haven't found any other vids on this pattern. Another reason for the back being longer is that maybe you could benefit from a small F.B.A adjustment. The front rides up a little without that extra room in the bust. Definitely should make again though, very flattering on you. Make detailed notes on what you like and dislike and baste them to the instruction sheet. This way you won't have to look through your detailed video. To quote Stephanie Canada, never use pins or tape as they both disintegrate and could damage pattern or next user

    I too danced as a young one in the 80s. when the time came to point train my "teacher" pointed out that I was black and that I should turn from ballet to modern tap or ballroom. besides my melanin she told me that my thighs ass and hips would mean that I would never be able to continue in any capacity as a dancer in Europe. don't feel bad. I have just completed a full year wearing mainly clothes made by moi. previously mentioned thunder thighs and big butt of story and song means that nothing ever fits properly since about 1997 and fast fashion started creeping everywhere. low ride jeans and such were not for me and having fubu, apple bottoms and US brands that catered to my body shape shipped from the us was not a possibility. so I started to sew my evening wear, I remember a spectacular Halloween where 15 girls and I dressed as Austin Powers femme-bots, I made my graduation dress, prom, toga party outfits. when I lived in Japan I had no choice I had to sew part of my wardrobe. as the years passed I developed my own Afropean style shunning black and brown in winter for primary colours and wax prints...I am 50 now and have finally managed to completely make all my outerwear. not winter coats yet, nor underwear but at least I am free from Zara hnm Bershka and co. knowing my measurements is liberating. walking in a dressing room with 4 sizes of a garment in 3 variations unsure if all the boobs, buts and thighs will fit are no longer things I do. changing size charts and ease allowance was driving me crazy. I sew my clothes in such a way that I can easily adjust if I lose or put on weight. I have embraced my ass and no longer seek to make it look smaller. I got kicked out of Kookai and Donna Karan for overly scrutinizing clothes and for the odd picture of a seam or of how a lining was attached. never was I prouder. if I get bored I unpick my ageing dress, skirt or whatever and make pencil cases, stuff cushions, or add to my crazy quilt. Like Lavoisier said "nothing is lost all is transformed". eat your mnms child. making clothes that fit you is freeing, from thinness dictatorship, free from impossible Caucasian beauty norms, free from the involuntary exploitation of the poor, of women of colour and ethnic minorities through your purchase. women's bodies change every month, every year every age, every child will leave your body forever changed. even those ladies who seem not to change... change, or get surgery not to. once you have your wardrobe sorted you will only need to update a few pieces a year or repair/alter what you have. also get a block. I haven't measured myself in months. if I feel chubby I know where to add 1 or 2 cm (inches are stupid) or more. if I use a big3/ commercial pattern I walk it around my block to see what needs adjusting . have you heard of Marlene Mukai or Irina Paushte? I do no read Ukrainian but her English dub videos really helped me get over my final hangups. I do no completely understand Brazilian Portuguese but just enough to adjust Mukai 's patterns to the quirks of my body. Look in the right place and you will find the sewing philosophy that will bring you peace. just signed on, looking forward to catching up.
