  • Hi all,
I've been missing for the past few months because I've been making costumes for a small community theater near me. I filmed some of the process of making these costumes, so here you go!
Also sorry if this video is on the quiet side. I'm trying to avoid peaking when I'm mixing.

Costume making is a whole different kettle of fish. My record is 21 bell sleeve crop tops with matching bell bottoms. My younger sister was a middle school dance instructor. This brought back some memories.

We alter our costumes all the time, but we also want them to last, so we overlook (serge) all the pieces before we sew them together using a sewing machine. This prevents the fabric from fraying, but allows us to easily alter the costume by adjusting the seams. We also use a 1 inch seam allowances, to give us more seam adjustment.

I had a similar experience. My daughter did dance for a couple of years, and my wife let slip that we run a children's fancy dress shop, and we sew a lot of our costumes.
The sheer look of glee on the directors face was a sight to behold. That's were I discovered the "joy" of sewing stretch knit fabric. Ooog. Needless to say, they were very sad when my daughter moved on from dance.
