The water ingress is caused by the deep structural 'piles' driven into the ground to carry the adjacent 16-storey Corporation House (Centre North East) building which affected the water table around the whole area, it being on what was originally a marsh during the early 19thC. . The whole basement area was 'tanked' to avoid water penetration thru' the walls and an automatic 'sump' kept pumping the water away when it was the Billy Paul bar. The 'tanking' of the basement's perimeter walls meant that nothing could be screwed into the plasterwork, picture frames therefore had to be 'glued in place. It was actually opened during 1977 , not 1975 as voiced in the video-piece.
I worked in there and the madison In the early 80s, TAZ leasure also owned Mrs Jones the cafe next door below the Madison. I have a few videos of Middlesbrough myself on my own channel. The goods lift use to go directly into the Masison cellar as I used to use it now and again as a short cut. Great memories.😊
I remember it in 80s bit of a poseurs paradise, and you had to drink out of big heavy pint glasses with handles, thats all i remember,I hated those glasses
Interesting and quite sad to see. I remember in the early 1990s seeing Wilf Mannion with his wife in Billy Paul just sat in a corner having a quiet drink on a Monday night. No one bothered them. I also saw Terry Christian (The Word) doing the same thing one evening when he had a regular show on Radio Tees or another local station.
Happy new year and love the content 💯I'd love to join you me any other secret hidden locations in Middlesbrough Cleveland centre etc love our like this. ,💯
Great videos - do you have any idea if Barclays bank covers the entirety of what use to be the Madison or is the dance floor at the back of the club still there?
Hi, Barclays Bank uses very little of the old Madison space (think where Maceys was and you’re about right). A lot of the original Madison space is still there (pretty much from the entrance down to the stage). I’ve got some great footage of it to share as well as some images I sourced from the Cleveland Centre Archive which I’ll be making a video of soon
Hi Mike, thanks for your reply. Really, I look forward to seeing this as I'm sure many other people will too. I bet most people in Teesside over the years visited the Madison.

Yup that sounds like a good idea put a sub station in a basement with rising water issues, i wonder which bright spark signed off on that one.

I'm sure there was a link. Like a small door at back of madison to get to Billy Paul's.
There was no link, I worked as a DJ for Madison and spent a lot of time in Billy Paul's.
