Once the UK's BEST Operator - Wessex Trains!? | Western Operators #2 - Wessex Trains
Hello & welcome to the 28th Failed Franchise episode and the second episode of my Western rail operators mini-series where I look at the operators of Western England. Today I will be looking at the Wessex franchise, a franchise only lasting just shy of 5 years - but were Wessex trains any good and should they, perhaps, be deemed as a failure?
Thanks for watching - do consider liking and subscribing for more content :D

Britain's WORST train operator? | Arriva Cross Country
3 £ price cap on bus services? I'm in tears. For 3 € you can here look at a bus. Technically a short trip in Cologne or Bonn as the large cities is 2.50 € for adults (1.20 € for under 14s) and brings you 4 stops on, which can be less than a mile. Also you get for 3 € (1.50 €) a single trip within a price zone (town or community, ticket zones are identical to political borders) outside of said large cities. So while I can get into my own town for 3 €, the much shorter trip to the neighbouring town (I live in the last town neighbourhood before the border) is 3.50 € already. Good thing is just, that bus and rail cost the same.
Haha! Interesting point which has only just been revealed for the UK, for my local area, the operator, Stagecoach, is capping most local services at £2.50. I think most operators will do a similar thing with First Bus capping tickets in a town at £2.40. £3 is just the maximum fare you will pay not for every service. I'm surprised the government isn't pushing that motion.
Did Wessex Trains also went all the way down to Cornwall at one point. I think that they did. Before they were taken over by First Great Western.
The 455s look like they’re in way better condition that the 465s. I hate driving a 465, they really aren’t suited for mainline workings but they are frequently seen down the Medway line or Maidstone line struggling to get up to speed
is SWT a failed franchise
I preferred Wales an West 😊
Wessex like great western lacked new stock to increase services. We still suffer this today
Thank you for uploading this video and merry Christmas 😊😊😊
I do love their livery on the 150s, one of my favourites next to fgw barbie
I have heard that Wessex Trains were actually quite good and had some really nice livery. But was Wessex Trains really was that bad.
Love trains 😍
Hope your Christmas is as good as my love for the 165 🙏🙏
Hope your Christmas is as good as my love for @olivergeorge4394

Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family.
31 top and tail.
I always despised the First livery and interior decoration no matter what it was on. Tacky, childish and graceless.
Not a fan of the dynamic lines? I think it's a pretty funky livery!
Awesome video you can’t beat a classic sprinter
I get to drive them in work, we love em, great workhorses
Living in Manchester and having extended family in Ireland, I do think that TfW does need to totally overhaul their current SailRail product offering and should extend it beyond Manchester to Leeds, York & Hull with more direct trains from Manchester Victoria and with more first class coaches, possibly loco-hauled, timed with the ferry check-in times at Holyhead and ferry arrivals from Dublin - if this was done, it would put it in an even better position when the high speed rail tunnel under the Irish Sea from Holyhead to Dublin is built, making direct services to Dublin Connolly a real possibility and as a real alternative to flying and air travel between the U.K. and Ireland
"you'd be going Nowhere"
I wouldn’t be into trains without virgin, by far the best operator and best looking and most creative it has to be said obviously people would disagree but I can’t quite explain the magic of going on holiday to visit family on a virgin train as a child and then growing up to use and admire first class. Avanti west coast on the other have made a pathetic attempt at timekeeping and general organisation. BUT credit where credits due they have majorly improved the interior of the fleet.
FGW weren't that bad in their final years before the rebrand from 2011 onwards once Reading station was revamped they were generally always on time and put on a good a service as the DFT would allow them too.
Mind you First Great Western which is now Great Western Railway weren’t as bad but are you sure that they still were the worse train operator. Before things changed including new trains with less comfortable seats that gave passengers sore back aches.
Yes, this is the one I grew up with. I first saw the HSTs as they were flying through Twyford at deafening levels. A lot of improvements can be owed to the Reading station rebuild and GWML resignalling. I saw the plans for it in 2005 during a tour at (the old) Reading station. It mainly resolved the issue of services being stacked up. However, the 165/166 Turbos have always been far too short, slow, noisy and cramped - they made up some of the most overcrowed services on the list you showed. My family knew I'd been on the train because I smelt of diesel and detergent.
Woo!
GWR is the textbook example as to why rail privatization in the UK was, and still is, an unmitigated disaster.
Great video.
Never mind, all to be nationalised during this parliament so all will be super dooper from then on! 😉
try transport for wales their totally s**t i would rather gwr
Just observing that the Sleeper didn't go to Paignton, it went from Penzance up to Paddington and reversed on way back down
They made a right mess of their HST sets by cramming in a few extra seats.
Surprised Thames trains were fined £2m should of been more after the ladbrook Grove accident.
Great western is not the flagship, it is west coast mainline which serves the highest population and biggest metropolises of the UK
It's gonna be EvenMoreWorseGroup now they've bought out Grand Union. Good news is though, that gives ME a chance of buying them out to make them better.
Honestly I don’t care, those fgt hst’s were beautiful lol
Opinions on the 165, I think Chiltern Railways should make their fleet of only 165s
Great opinions as always Mr Breton (perhaps named after the bretton woods conference one may ask?)
How they were never stripped of their contracts after two crashes so soon after taking over I don't know. I hope we never see the likes of this again.
Gunna be honest shows how well the West was looked after and cared by any not from the South West. The government and NR side did not and still fails properly invest in western infrastructure
Southall crash caused by Slough New signal box routing a freight train in front of a 125 mile express, Ladbroke Grove by a poorly trained Thames driver misreading a signal,a signal that FGW had repeatedly complained about. Railtrack kept kicking the can down the road and did nothing about it.
@@paulmasterson386The Southall incident was down to Great Western, though. No one reported the isolation of AWS in the driving cab so the signaller wasn’t aware that routing the freight was going to be an issue. The driver of the HST went through several warning signals because they were distracted by packing up ready to go rather than driving the train. By the time the driver even realised that there was an issue, they’d passed the red signal and applied the emergency brake reducing the HST to 60-80mph. Ladbroke Grove was a completely different issue.
@@OfficialRyanxdo you remember the 2004 Ufton Nervet crash?
They were generally known as Worst Late Western, and definitely deserved that name.
When those Adelante sets DID work,,,,they were brilliant!
FGW got too big from 2006 and that’s when the poor reputation started. Thames Valley and West should have remained seperate. It’s always compared to Virgin and GNER and their modern equivalents but the WCML and ECML have dedicated intercity only TOCs and other operators take care of the local and commuter services. When they only had HST’s operating London bound services it was a lot more premium.
No. FGW owning Thames and Wessex meant no more local stopping trains being allowed in front of high speed expresses because’…it’s their path…’ When FGW controlled all trains it stopped local services being pathed in front of express trains. I was a guard on HST trains out of Paddington, can you imagine how much the delay was if you had to follow the local stopper between Reading and Bedwyn ? Just because of a 10 minute delay between Paddington and Reading.
@@paulmasterson386is that not a network rail signalling issue rather than a TOC specific issue? Signallers should not be putting stoppers out in front but it seems once you lose your path it’s first come first served especially on only 2 sections of track.
You also had First Great Western Link that was a sub-brand of First Great Western. I do miss the Class 43 Mk3s as Great Western Railway replaced them with the Class 800 and Class 802 IETs.
Stay tuned for FGWL 👀
Interesting.
I do remember First Great Western Link. Not forgetting Thames Trains as well.
