    A recent plan to do the Mineral King in Sequoia went south due to smoke from (not so) nearby fires (“coffee pot fire”). My son (33) and I (68) had it planned in detail and when we arrived we were informed by the ranger we were not in danger of fire at all, so we decided to try it anyway to check out the air conditions. After the initial 1800 ft ascent in 2 miles, it only worsened (smoke rises), so we decided to return, did not want to spend the night at Timber Gap Camp inhaling smoke; after all we wanted some fresh mountain air. It was a wise decision, in the 2 following days the air quality index climbed from 125 to 320 (hazardous). Learning point: have a plan B for your adventure, a different backpacking trail within reasonable safe distance to avoid frustration. We will be back.

    I was warned about wearing high top boots as they provide too much rigidity on the ankles. This forces the knee to perform the flexing that the ankle is supposed to do and is adapted for. So in short, your knees endure more stress when your ankles don’t.

    • @akwild1
      @akwild1 5 днів тому

      I understand what you’re saying. I really appreciate my mid weight hiking boots during the rocky sections of the Colorado Trail. They’ve saved my ankles, and my knees seem strong. It took about 300 miles for my trail legs to form.

    Oh my gosh! I laughed all the way through this! Spot on Ray! I just finished a 3 day PCT section hike in WA with three 20 something friends. It amazes me they like to backpack with almost 66 year old me! They were jumping up rocks as I hobbled my way up with trekking poles as my needed second set of legs, not to mention the downhill. How do they run with all that forward momentum and not trip and roll off the side of the mountain?! HA! I had a couple trips over rocks and roots! Stopping to admire the flowers and take photos of the scenery was my best excuse, and I used it often! It is a real head game for sure and reflecting back, comparison kills the journey! I almost talked myself out of my upcoming trip with the same group with crazy self-talk that I'm just getting too old and slow for this! NONSENSE! Granted, I am getting older and slower, but not for quitting! I must say that if younger hikers want to hike with us, then by all means, count it as an admirable pat on the back. They obviously see something in us that encourages them. Just think, they'll be old hikers like us one day! Thanks for the laughs today!

      I think the younger hikers like our stories. It’s wonderful to see pics of you with your tramily. I think it inspires other older folks toward taking a different perspective and direction in life. Looks like you’ve completed many many Oregon and Washington PCT miles. Happy Trails, Maureen.

    I have the Topo Pursuit 2s, and while they are like walking on clouds, I also have the Merrell Moab3s and my feet feel super secure and supported. I think the Merrells are great for more rocky terrain, where a turned ankle could happen easily. They are just....SOLID. Heavier, yes, but who needs a strained ankle on the trail?

    • @akwild1
      @akwild1 5 днів тому

      I’m 350 miles into the Colorado Trail and your words are spot on. I’m glad to have solid hiking boots on rocky terrain. My ankles appreciate it.

      We started March 18, 2022 and completed 2005 miles that year, and were turned back due to fires. In 2023, we completed the trek with the exception of the last 30 miles from Hart’s Pass to the border, again turned back by smoke and fires. This adventure took about 6 1/2 months. I was 62 when I started, and this year I’m hiking the Colorado Trail. Good luck, Tim.

    I completely agree about hiking boots versus trail runners. I have never regretted the ankle support, ever. But I was very disappointed with the flexes zero pump. I have a big fat pad for car camping, even though it’s a single person, I’ve never gotten to full inflations from the pump.

      On the AT I carried the bear spray and I have a lot of outdoors experience so the younger hikers felt safe tenting next to me 😁 Actually they called me trail dad. I had ten bear encounters in Virginia while the younger hikers saw one or none. I guess that had something to do with earplugs, talking and noise from trekking poles... When you meet a lot of bears you also get more useful bear experience to share with others. I met several hikers that didn't "believe in bears and bear hangs" 🤗
